After watching drummers for now 45 years, I must say that this is the single most valuable drum solo there is...Everything from the perfect technique to accents, groove, emotions, story, damn it the whole living vibe this is just beyond...at 4.01 when he enters the funk it really hurts is so good...so lucky to be able to listen to this. Thanks!!!!!!!
I just absolutely love the way Jojo plays - his feel and expression; I just jive with it so well. There are lots of good technical drummers out there, but Jojo just seems to be what my ears want to hear the most.
I remember watching this video years ago as a much less experienced drummer and being floored. Nothing has changed since then, still blowing my mind. And I always have to rewind 1:33...I could never get that trick to work!
I really don't know what it is, but there is just a difference in his playing and sound since the years have gone by. Like I know he changed heads but...there's just a fire of playing I see more from JoJo in his younger days then I do from him now.
I really recommend slowing the video down to .25x (in the video settings) and closely watching the nuances in his hand technique. I didn't realize how open his left hand gets when he plays harder strokes.
YIKES! That man is INSANE! My drummer sent me here after I told him that I saw a great "off-the-cuff" drummer playing with Jaco back in 1985 - and his response was THIS VIDEO! I'm FLOORED!
estoy de acuerdo contigo! yo recién salió el dvd de el lo compré y es el que mayor enseñanza me dejó! y mira que prácticamente tengo todos! que hermoso termina este DVD con tremendo solo!!!
JoJo has a style all his own and what I say here is out of respect. He wants to control the whole feel of the song whereas other drummers just play a back beat and embellish here and there. His style is embellishment. He's like adding on to himself playing a backbeat. That's the only way to describe it.
At this point I just study JoJo and Buddy. They both offer so much to learn and challenge yourself with. And you can hear Buddy A LOT in JoJos playing!
Great to see Jojo playing a 4 piece kit. That is the true test of a good drummer, not the massive kits. He and Carl Palmer, in my opinion, are the best of today's drummers. All the great jazz drummers, like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, , have long gone, sadly. We will never see their likes, again.
ho avuto un passato (molto lontano) da batterista rock, questo lo trovo eccezionale, eppoi è il mio strumento preferito. Chi non ne capisce di batterie, eviti di commentare.
How can you possibly say that? This is amazing and beautiful. Just *watching* his hands - is a thing of beauty. I respect critics, but this is an absolutely wonderful solo, in every aspect. Flow, technique, dynamics, feel, musicality... It's all here. I've literally never heard Jojo play something that didn't sound great. He's absolutely one of the greatest drummers ever. And he probably has the best hand technique of any drummer in history.
This dvd was amazing back watching it in 2007 and now almost 17 years later im even more dumbfounded at how amazing it still is.

only jojo could jam to some shit from metroid prime

every so often there is the perfect comment...
2:24 how does nobody acknowledge the amazing foot work?? Triple strokes on a single pedal both so clean and fast?

Total monster of a drummer. Love the groove and sense of time the whole way through.

+Stephen Struss I think the more you grow as a drummer the more you appreciate solo's/or playing of this level.
His drumming is so clean. It's really cool to see him drum.
Total monster. Like Buddy. Ultra tense. Every stroke. Every phrase.
I really don't know what it is, but there is just a difference in his playing and sound since the years have gone by. Like I know he changed heads but...there's just a fire of playing I see more from JoJo in his younger days then I do from him now.
i think i know what u mean. i like JoJo's stuff but this solo solidified it for me. dunno has he always been a break beat guy?
Creativity, Technic, precision, musicality, dynamics, Harmony, vocabulary, feeling, this guy is all in one. A real Master!
freaking great!!!!

His snare roll patterns are reminiscent of a young Max Roach!

100 views at least are mine and each time I watch I feel less coordinated and more confused...
We all do..
so aggressive and in your face. Just punches you in the face with sound.
this really is the pinnacle of Jojo. I wish I could get the drugs he is on for this video, because I could play like that too, if not way better. :-)

That’s one great sounding snare.
What would it be.
Toms not as good.
Pretty uninspiring solo.
How can you possibly say that?
