Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri Experience | Japanese Summer Festival ★ ONLY in JAPAN

- The Nebuta Matsuri is considered by many as Japan's top festival and I traveled 600 km north to the northern most city of Honshu to participate in the fun!
What makes Nebuta so amazing?
★ It could be the illuminated Nebuta floats that are pulled down on the city streets, turning and bowing to the crowd.
They're often in the form of mythological Japanese gods or dieties, larger than life in size.
★ Perhaps it's the taiko drums and flute players that make this festival no 1. The beat with those mystical flutes stays in your mind and body days after the festival has ended.
★ It could be the haneto dancers dressed in special yukata dancing and screaming Rasera! Rasera!
The answer is that they all when put together make this festival a must-see when you visit Japan in the summer.
In this episode we look at:
AOMORI CITY ATTRACTIONS
NEBUTA HISTORY AND MUSEUM
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN NEBUTA
HOW THE FLOATS ARE MADE
THE MUSIC
HANETO DANCERS
Special thanks to MARUHA NICHIRO NEBUTA ASSOCIATION and Nebuta Design Master Shigeki Tezuka and his wonderful Nebuta float called "Records of the Three Kingdoms: Zhong Fei Roars at the Bridge of Changban"
STAR WARS also made an appearance at this year's Nebuta Festival. Check it Yoda, Luke, Vader, C3PO, R2D2 and others in the form of Nebuta art in the video.
This show has been created and produced by John Daub ジョン・ドーブ. He's been living and working in Japan for over 18 years and regularly reports on TV for Japan's International Channel.
The 2018 Nebuta Matsuri (Festival) is taking place this week! If you’re in Japan, def don’t miss it - August 2 to August 7 ヾ(๑╹◡╹)ノ"
Best time I ever ever had in the entire island of Honshu. Aomori Nebuta Matsuri festival flutes really stayed with me since August 2019. I need to go back in 2021 (COVID19 permitting of course). The people were friendly, the food was unique, was hesitant at first as a westerner.
Now I miss eating Okonomiyaki and Soba. The places are clean right after a major festival. People have major respect which I love the most about Japan. They kept their culture and never wavered to western influences too much. I even have a Japanese friend (but outside the 2019 period). Willing to take me to Ibaraki tourist hot-spots when the world opens up again.
thanks for the awesome video, even I danced for two years, still cant get enough for that. Expecting next year Nebuta too. and you too mate !
We were planning our Northern trip for 2020. This officially made it during the summer. Thanks for another great video! My best to you, and your lovely wife!
Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri's festival seems incredible.
I just need to come to Japan for a full year and experience everything!
Why didn't I watch this sooner 😱
So good!
This video compliments the nebuta live stream perfectly!
I really like these events. They show me the importance of culture and tradition. How they keep good values and create the sense of comunity.
Another good video. Congratulations.
+Aristóteles Brandão Filho Thank you!! Culture and Tradition is so rich here -- it's so exciting to make an episode like this. -John
Nebuta festival was great at night when it's lit up very nice colours !!!!! And lots of preparation wow years ago with candles sounds a danger back in them days . Thank god for l,e,d lighting now John !!!!!!! 👍🏼
Yeah!! Those LEDS are a game changers. No more fires!! So happy to hear from you again. -John
We have many big festivals or Matsuri in Japan. Gion Matsuri in Kyoto, Tenjin Maturi in Osaka, Kanda Matsuri in Tokyo, Hakatadontaku in Fukuoka, Tanabata Matsuri in Sendai, Kantou Matsuri in Akita, Nebuta Maturi and so on. Between ourselves, I've never been to such big festivals. (TT) I only take part in local festivals held in my neighborhood. In Japan, most of the festivals are held in Autumn to be thankful to have a good harvest. So for those who would like to visit Japan, Fall is the best season, I think. Because they can enjoy Japanese food in seaon, Matsuri and especially, beautiful red and yellow leaves!! Have a good time in Japan!!^^

Great videos! I'm always learning something new and this has built up my anticipation for Japan travel so much! Can't wait to see the country for myself. Also I don't mean any bad but in your outfit at the end you looked a lot like the karate kid lol
He should have included the festivals final day where the floats are lit up towed out to the sea, lit up, and then set ablaze on the water. It's a beautiful scene & memory!

Awesome video, as ususal! The 'Rassera' reminded me of the Akira OST? I hope i'm not mistaken on that one...!
Keep up the good work, I really wish to see such pretty floats IRL once, especially when lit!
+RietjeRox Thanks!! Yes, the shouting does seem similar doesn't it. I think this festival has certainly inspired many anime and manga artists over the years. -John

+WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN And hey, congrats on the 100K subs. Great to see a channel with proper content doing well.
This looks amazing! Hopefully one day I'll be able to experience this myself. :)

And I'll visit Japan next week!
+Prayoga Harryputra I am editing it right now! Coming next week :) -John
+WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN hey! I'm in Japan right now.
I don't try the UFO catcher though...
most of my allowance end up in Pokemon Center Tokyo :3
i love your vids and i love the yokai storys and oni the floats are so ecentric
Joyful 😀 🙏🏼
Wow!! People really do put a lot of effort into their floats.
+wiilover07 It's amazing, the details and hard work and then -- it's all destroyed the day after the event! -John
I just realized thats the chant they use in the music of the anime movie Akira. Pretty cool...
Nebuta is extreme exciting festival.
How fun! It kind of reminds me of Mardi Gras in the USA, but this looks ways cooler! I can imagine how sore and tired you were, but completely worth it. Oh neat next is UFO Catchers! When I was a kid I was awesome at Crawl Machines I once needed a 4 gallon trash bag to fit all my plush toy innings in.
+Eszra I haven;t been to Mardi Gras yet but it's an interesting comparison! Total fun and loads of dancing and singing!!
Yes, the UFO Catcher is really neat. I always wanted to know if there was a science behind it ... and there actually may be! ... that's a lot of plush toys!! hahahaha I haven't had that much luck -- yet. -John
Nice video. One thing though in regards to your comment early in the video, I read that the oni were demons like the yokai and kami were translated as gods.
Awesome video as usual... and Happy (Almost) 100,000 subs! :D
Almost :) I'm so happy for the support by everyone. Much more fun to be had!! -John
wow those floats are epic af!
thank you for enlightening me with this beautiful creation ihave achieved true inner peace and spiritual enlightening cheese
Reminded me of Akira when they were yelling Rasera.
Yeah, three quarters of the way into the final track "Requiem". Love the soundtrack and that particular piece of music.
Rasera rasera rase rase raseraaaaa😭👏
What a great video!) I think I will visit Japan and take part in Nebuta festival this year, so it was interesting to find smth new) But I'm a bit scared cause there's sooo many people dancing and shouting😅
Nice video !! Huge fan of yours
Thank you so very very much!! -John
Senpai, please notice me! I really love your videos and I will continue supporting you with all my RUclips "strength". I would be happy if you could notice me and also thank you for introducing me further more into Japan's culture after I watched a ton of anime. Thank you so much!
I notice you! Thank you so much for your continued support each time. Really REALLY appreciate it. -John
うつくしいです。ありがとうございます。(^o^)
i love u chanel... thk 4 the videos :)
はねとダンスの飛び跳ねる踊りは日本の他の踊りにないものですよね。どうやって始まったものか興味があります。
I am a Japanese.
Nebuta is very colorful, and it is exciting!
It is my favorite carnival.
The people jump while appealing for a shout called "Rasseraaaa Rasseraaaa".
I want you to participate by all means if you go to Japan.
You will suffer from a muscular pain on the next day when you jumped. :D
+soudesune2011 haha!! Yes, the next day, I was a little sore from jumping, shouting and dancing -- and drinking with locals! Aomori is so much fun as a city because of the great people living there. Thank you for watching! -John
Thank you this is so cool I would so want to join in!! Can you get the Haneto any where or is there a certain shop. Would love to know where you went.
Pretty cool video.
Great Video!!! Sugoi desu! :)
looked so much fun
Amazing video John. One of your best yet. Lots of energy.
This was super fun! I love doing the festivals like the this and the naked man festival a couple years ago. It's a lot of work to film and edit it but worth it! Thanks! -John
This was one of my favorite festival in Japan too. I also uploaded this event on my youtube channel. 😅 Though yours is more detailed and entertaining. Hoping to be like you! 😁
