    Hi folks! I’m really hoping for some guidance on what type of wood the foredeck is. And what finish I might use if it’s mahogany.

      Mahogany takes on a golden hue after continuous sun exposure. Oak darkens, mahogany get lighter.

    Happy Birthday "Lady Z"! Only the BEST have birthdays this time of year. I wish this is among the best you have had. I, also have a birthday coming soon. It will be my 79th. The shear fact of that age amazes me to no end. I had little expectation of reaching such heights of age and now here I am. Birthday salutations to any else celebrating as well.

    When I owned a wooden Grand Banks, I had great success with varnish over CPES becuase the CPES bonded so much better to the wood than the varnish ever did. I used at least two coats of CPES before six coats of Dutch varnish. If you get the first coat of varnish on before the CPES cures, a chemical bond supposedly forms. This method avoids the wasted time in applying a first, thinned coat of varnish on bared wood.

    I would go with the epoxy resin it's a more durable surface compared to varnish. The only concern is that it will turn yellow over time but it's got a yellow hue to begin with. Choice is ultimately yours Peter. You have more experience than i do but thats my two cents worth!

    The wood? In the '50's the western lumber market was "flooded" with Lauan Mahogany from the Philippines. Not really mahogany, but much cheaper, and the stuff was what DIYers and many contractors used. My dad's lumber yard had tons of it. My uneducated guess is you have a foredeck of sun bleached Meranti, a type of "Lauan" that came in light red and yellow.

    • @TravelsWithGeordie
      @TravelsWithGeordie  47 минут назад +1

      You know, I did wonder about this myself. But the construction details really suggest these planks are original, which mean the late 30's. It's also much harder that Lauan.

  • @mySeaPrince
    @mySeaPrince Час назад +2

    I think I have 3 slabs similar to it..
    Spoiler I don't know what it's called...
    when I plained the edges it was mustard yellow but the exposed surface while it seasoned on the roof of the shed for seven years.. I kept turning it.. is a dark brown/red.
    It's twice as heavy and much more dense than the original wood on my boat, which I was told is mahogany and sort of the weight of balsa wood.
    I would have preferred you to have treated the whole deck as there's a danger of stripes.
    I don't know much about epoxy etc..
    Could you use a layer of tissue and flood the deck with epoxy like they do to tables.. or would it crack?
    I wondered about some extra fixings at the ends of the planks and on the deck beams.
    How about a hatch using a sheet of Perspex?
    I replaced my foredeck with VT&G Larch and about where your hatch is have a
    20" x 27" skylight (aka thick piece of actual Perspex).. next year.. I will make it into a hatch. I have a blackout blind as it's the bedroom but before the blind.. I sort of got used to not sleeping in the dark.
    On the subject of goo.. I mainly use silicon, acrylic & siliconised acrylic..
    Could you do something about your cable steering systems as I have chain and rods 1/2"! It's heavy.. and have been thinking about cable.

    • @TravelsWithGeordie
      @TravelsWithGeordie  58 минут назад

      So much great stuff here! Good thoughts on the wood and skylight options. I love the cable steering as it so simple and can easily be repaired at sea.

    @Brent_K 2 часа назад +1

    Another great video, but sorry Peter, I think you should varnish the deck. I'm not sure I trust penetrating epoxy enough as the decking moves over the years. You could also introduce a bit of a Mahogany tint as the wood certainly looks golden (on my screen anyway).

    • @TravelsWithGeordie
      @TravelsWithGeordie  55 минут назад +1

      Thanks Brent! You're right, i surely expect it to move, which i s why i am hesitant to varnish, as that movement will cause many cracks that will then trap moisture.
