- Are you looking for some creative ways to store your tiny art? I love using tea tins for all kinds of art paper treasures. I went shopping for some new tins to store ATCs and zines, and I found so many beautiful tins that can store all kinds of tiny art. I'll show you many examples, and hopefully this will get you to see if you have any tea tins in your cupboards that you can look for and use for your own creative art.
What other kinds of tins do you use for storage? Let me know in the comments❣️
Most of these tea tins are from World Market.
Also mentioned in this video is Fobot art by Amy Flynn: fobots.bigcart...

I'm Margarete Miller - a collage artist who loves to work with vintage ephemera and vintage inspired papers in my art. ❤️
I worked with a lady who loved Altoids...she said "you're creative...make something" and would pass the tins along. I covered several and gave them to friends for Galentine's Day with chocolates inside. My favorite was the one I filled with tiny half pans and used for my watercolors. I eventually got a slightly larger Creative Memories tin that would fit more and bigger pans and that's what I use now. I have several Altoid tins with tiny ephemera inside as well.
Watercolor paints inside?!! Oh, that's a great idea. Thanks so much for sharing 😉👍🏻💜
Great ideas. I realize I have lots of small things I don’t know where to store.
There you go. Happy hunting for some cool containers! 😉👍🏻💜
This video is completely up my street. I love collecting tins to store crafty bits. Old tobacco tins are ideal, and of course they can be decorated. My daughter came home declaring she was turning into me, she had bought an attractive tin of biscuits, just so she could use the tin afterwards for her growing craft bits. Wonderful, thank you.
Ha ha! That's so cool that your daughter shares your interests in things like this. I hope mine will too, someday 😉💜👍🏻
Thanks for all of the great ideas!
Dear Margaret ❤ This is incredibly helpful ❤ why haven't I thought of putting small art pieces in tins? I'm always looking for vintage tins at my thrift store, and have quite a few!🤦♀️ Thanks a bunch, and happy crafting 📚📏🖊✂️🇭🇲💖
Will you be making a video showing how to decorate tins? I did not see one on your channel, but based on the style of your other projects, I would like to see how you go about it. Thank you.
Good idea. I'll keep an eye out for some interesting tins to decorate. ❤️😉👍🏻
Yes, will work on one. I’m preparing right now 👍🏼💙😉
@@MargareteMiller Thank you! I've watched other videos, but based on what I have seen of your channel, I am eager to see how you go about it. I believe Ceri Griffiths mentions you, quite admiringly, on a regular basis.
I have the first tin that you show, the shop with movable awning. I bought mine around 2002 at the (sadly now defunct) Bramah Tea Museum in London. It's one of my favorites, and although it currently has tea in it, I might move it out of the cupboard and use it as you do.
Interesting that you have it, too. That's so cool! Yep. Get it out of your cupboard 😉💜👍🏻
Wonderfully inspiring video as always. If I may pass on a storage tip. Lay a ribbon down through the tin and place cards on top of it. Then you can use the ends of the ribbon as a handle to raise the cards up from the bottom.
Great tip! I will definitely do that for my tin of zines. It's hard to get those out of there at the moment. 😉 Thank you 💙
I have collected tins for many years. Yours are lovely. Hugs, treen 💕💕💕
LOVE the “FoBots”. . . And YOUR WATCH!❤
Awww, thanks❣️ I just got it a few weeks ago 😉👍🏻💙
Very fun video, Margarete! I love tins. I have my Mom's old button tin. I think it's where my love for tins started. I remember how I loved the sound the buttons made as they hit the tin while I picked through them when I was young. I still give that button tin a shake now and then just to hear that sound. You have lots of beautiful tins filled with wonderful things. Thank you for sharing. ❤
You reminded me that I have a button tin, too! Ooof! Next time. You're right, though. The sound it makes when you shake it is unmistakable 😉👍🏻💙
Gosh, loved seeing this. I have used tea tins in my art studio for years. I'm a tea drinker and love all kinds of tea. So I was accumulating so many tins. I used to display them with my tea pots. They come in all sizes. A unique way to store small items and look nice on your shelves. Enjoyed this. Thank you.🎨🖌 P.S. I store my paint brushes in teapots that lids are broken.
Nice!! I love the idea of brushes in an old teapot. 🫖
Margarete: I love tins and boxes. I, too, have an assortments of different shapes and sizes of both. However, you are more organized than me. I think you inspired me to get a bit more organized. This is a good thing. Thanks, Carol from California
I love boxes, too. I was debating pulling some of those out to show you. 😉💜
I love boxes they are essential for storage so I rarely get rid of them. I want to be organised 😀💝
You are a woman after my own heart. I collect tins as well and love to store things in it. I also love the fobots. I also use cigar boxes
I have two cigar boxes, Dorothy, but I feel like they are too fragile. I like the durability of tins, even though they can be dented if you're not careful.
@Margarete. I have put some of my wooden cigar boxes through quite a bit lol, but i agree about the durability of tins. When i was in aNorway I found a tin at an antique/ junk shop. My kinda souvenir
You can also find a nice selection of tins at your local dollar tree. I also enjoy repurposing tins..I’ve covered some with fabric, ribbon, scrapbook paper, etc…definitely some of my favorite storage for art supplies and things. ❣️✨
I’ve never looked at Dollar Tree. I’ll keep an eye out 👍🏼💜
Yes, do the boxes too! What fun. Carol from California
I buy antique/vintage candy tins and make journals to fit inside. They make wonderful gifts! I also use them for storage for my journal making bits.
A tiny journal that fits inside?! That would be so darling ❣️ Great idea. Thanks for sharing 😉
That idea is absolutely super!
Some have been 3x6-ish with approximately 1-1/2 inch spine, some 4x4, some smaller. I even made one using a 12x12 cookie tin and made a flip top pencil box inside with a blue velvet lining. The possibilities are endless!
Wow. I have the very first tin you used. Have had for many many years. I loved your collection and was so inspired to go and sort my things. I was just wondering though do you label these tins in any way so you know what’s in it or so you just have a very good memory.
Isn't that tin the coolest? I love the flap-awning 😉💜👍🏻
I’ve loved tins forever 🥰 my Mum always had lovely ones , many from Holland . I used to keep crayons and treasures in them in my youth . Use them in my craft room and around the house , they are so pretty
I love having them around in different rooms, too. What nice memories you’ve shared. Thank you 👍🏼💙
World Market will have the largest selection of cool tins (with food inside) at Christmas time. Quite a few of my storage tins are from them (ex employee). The finish on that one tin was likely burned off. Historic reenactors throw Altoid tins in a camp fire to remove the paint after which they'll look fairly period appropriate. I've done something similar with a charcoal grill. Not recommended for indoors.
Another tin to watch for if you're a tea drinker: Harney & Sons. They're good sized square tins that I keep chunky Sharpie Markers in.
Thanks so much for that advice. I don't know anything about that process of removing paints. 👍🏻
So cool! I can imagine you've got a lot of neat tins if you were a former employee of World Market. 😉👍🏻💙 I'll keep an eye out for Harney & Sons. I've ordered from them in the past for loose tea, but it came in a pouch, not a tin.
I love using tins
Needles, bulb pins, safety pins, straight pins, eyelets and brads all live in tins in my craft space. LOVE your videos!
Great ideas! All kinds of sewing notions 🧵
Great video, Margarete! I love tins, too, and one of my favorite collections is a large variety of vintage plaid picnic tins. Picnic tins are big enough to store things like sheet music, maps and other ephemera, so they are really useful in the studio.
Picnic tins? I’ve never heard that term before. I’m going to google it. They sound like something I’d love 😉💜👍🏼
You have such a creative way of looking at items and finding interesting uses for those items. Your videos are so calming because you have a soft voice and it is a pleasure to listen to . I love old tins and have a few. I am going to use them for my small paper stashes. ❤
Thank you so much for your kind comments, Susan❣️ And I'm so glad you're going to pull out your old tins 👍🏻💙😉
Hello Margarete, I hope all is well. I am watching your videos. I am asking you if we must always glue 5 things on the page? I often see that on your collages. I don't have begun! Much things to make for Christmas, deco..... Thank-you for answering. In East of France we are waiting the first snow. Nice evening or day? Regards
It doesn’t need to be 5 things, but at least 3 things, I think. Start with 3 and see if it needs more. 👍🏼
What an awesome collection. tfs.
Thanks for watching!
Tins are so much fun and yours are cute Margarete. An easy way to get the wax ou,t is to pop in freezer for a few mins then it will come ot easy :) thanks for the great videos 😊
Thanks for the tip! Great suggestion 💙👍🏻😉
This was so fun to watch - thanks for sharing I love old tins
Thanks so much, Alison😘
I enjoyed this video 🙂
I'm so glad!
Hi are you having a challenge for 2024. I hope so. ❤❤❤❤
Yep, I'm working on them now. In early December they'll be out. 😉👍🏻💙
The recipe-card tin was a fun skip down memory lane for this 60-something gal...it might be a good way to store Index card art/ICADs; that is if the size matches(3" × 5" older tins, 4" × 6" newer tins) ❤️😉
Yep, that's why I got that recipe box. I've always wanted to have a tin of index card art. Maybe I should get working on that! 😉👍🏻💙
OMG, you have found my "sweet spot", lol... I love tins, boxes, baskets, etc. And I store all my goodies in those. For me the thrift store is where I find most of my collection. Love all the ones you showed, but my fav from CP was the one with all the doggies on the front. Will have to go and get that one. Also those steampunk dolls are really cool! TFS - Hugs L
Yep. I was really tempted to get the dogs tin. I couldn't picture what I could put in it, though 🤔💜👍🏻
Love your sweet little collection of tins! 🥰👌🏻 And those FOBOTS are so darling!! Definitely checking them out.
Yep, check out Amy's site. She's got a sale coming up, too ❣️
I love the tin(s) idea. I don’t have a craft room like I used to so I always seem to reorganize. I have a lot of my things in pretty boxes from dollar tree that they have stocked for Christmas with lids rectangular shaped and they stack nice but I love the tins for small storage. I love your channel. I’ve been working in both the spells and potions journal AND the grid journal. Thank you for the wonderful and easy/simple inspiration. I’ve wanted to collage most of my life and have always been fascinated by vintage papers/receipts/ etc. I didn’t know how or where to begin until I started watching you. Thank you so much!!
Wow! What lovely comments💜. I have lots of boxes, too. I love nesting them until I have a good stack. I mostly use them for sorting papers. I'm so glad you are enjoying the Spells & Potions, and the Grid Journal!! 💙
I ❤️ tins! I have been able to find some beautiful, vintage tins (also boxes) from antique stores ❤ and rummage sales. I have found a couple of recently made tins from Goodwill. I really appreciate that you took us along to World Market to explore another source for tins! I don't live near one anymore but will be sure to visit one when I have the chance! Please share your boxes with us! ❤
Thanks so much for your comments, Francie❣️ I have to keep an eye out the next time I'm in an antique shop for tins. I'm primed to look for papers, but I forget about tins! 😉💜👍🏻
I loved seeing all of your tins and their contents, and the jaunt into World Market! The tea tins there were gorgeous. I wish there was a world market near me. Fun video - thank you!
It was so fun to see your neat collection of tins and the treasures you have stored inside! I found a gift card tin at Michael's that fits zines perfectly, but doesn't hold very many. How do you store all of your tins? Yes, please do a video on boxes.
A gift card tin?!! I don't think I've seen those. I'm going to look them up! I like how small that could be 🤔💜👍🏻
have a love for tins too .my grandmother and mum used candy and cough and flu tins for buttons ,sewing gear ,pins, zippers sewing machine parts etc and now i use them for paints , and small parts like clips or erasers or sharpeners or parts for arts supplies etc . christmas is always a good one for tin collecting filled with cookies and candy or candles ,love them !
You've reminded me that my grandmother used to have candy tins, too. I wonder if that's where I got my love of them?! Thanks for your comments! 😘
Always enjoy your videos Margaret!
Thanks so much! 💜❤️💙
Fabulous range of tins! Love the Fobots!
Thanks, Jennifer 😘
Thanks for this fun video! Our nearest World Market is an hour away. We go once a year to buy my husbands ginger snaps but I’ll be shopping for tins this time. 🥰
We got ginger snaps, too! The Swedish ones. So good 😋
Very nice collection of tins. Merci!
Many thanks! 💜
