I had it when it was released, in my youth, this was my first proper programmable synthesizer. It has really nice editing potentials, I spent a bunch of my time revealing its secrets of sound architecture, but it returned back a lot of enjoyment through a lot of amazing sounds, including dual combinations of really warm and fatty sounds. I used it both in studio and playing live, it appeared to be very, very useful. Later I replaced it with V50(also 4 operater FM engine, but equipped with additional DSP, sequencer and rhythm machine with PCM sampled drums, very nice but underrated machine, unfortunately too soon swept away by SY series) and Kawai K4, a keyboard of completely advanced sound technology aiming to compete with M1 and SY77, or D50, both of them I used as a MIDI set, taking advantage of all the best elements of the two. When I listen today to some recordings made then on this gear, I regret for getting rid of it, despite all more modern means I use today.
Cool! Because I just bought them!!! Even though I don't have a midi to usb to program them in yet lo(on it way)l! If it didn't work I was going to be happy supporting the channel/website.
This shows that there´s no need to spend 500 bucks in a DX7 to get good and useful FM sounds. These 4 Operators FM synths from Yamaha (DX21, YS200, FB-1, DX11, etc) are great machines with some good programming, like this case. You can get it for a very low price actually. Another great, cheap (and much easier to program) 4 Operators FM synths are the DS-8 and 707 from Korg, that use the same internal YM2164 chip from Yamaha.
Thank you for this video sir. These patches are sounding great! I'dd love to buy them from you. I've seen the other comments here where you recommend Midi OX. That seems to only be compatible with Windows and Linux though. Do you have any other advice for a mac user? Thanks
@@alphacodesynth Hi! Do yu have any references for how one loads patches onto the DX-21? I have downloaded Sysex Libarian for Mac. Is there a sequence of buttons you need to press to prep the synth? I just only have a vague understanding of how to get custom patches onto thee synth.
I just picked up a DX21 for free. Only had to change the onboard battery. Looking forward to loading these patches. Do you know of any instructions for doing so?
Beautiful patches sir! I'm interested in buying your patches but im not sure how that works. Are the downloadable on the computer or on the synth itself?
Hi there, great patches, i would like to purches them. However, I recently tried loading sysex dumps through midi ox, but no luck. Any advice or guidelines on that topic?
Hey , so if i was you i would make sure you have first : the correct MIDI settings in Midiox , bot In and OUT have to be set to whatever Midi device will be sending the sysex , and also i think you need to check the DX Manual as you may have protection on or a Midi filter on that may be blocking or the patches you try to send are not for 21 but 11 which is not compatible , i don't have this Yamaha anymore so can't help more than that... But patches are still for sale yes.
You are free to have that opinion, but I think it's not very useful. I'm interested to hear what you can get out of a synth creatively. If external effects help with that, then use them, by all means. Sounds based on FM synthesis are prone to sound a little uninspiring without some effects, and a little chorus, delay or reverb can do wonders to them. Employing or even relying on effects IMHO does not automatically mean that the synthesizer sounds bad or that the patches are bad. To me the interesting question is, can you get interesting and useful sounds from a synthesizer? Whether with or without effects doesn't really matter, because effects are so easily added and everybody has easy access to them, be that in form of hardware pedals or rack units or software.

I had a DX21 in the eighties.... and never made it sound as good as this. Great job.
Play with Strymon timeline for sound in this clip.

I picked up a perfect DX27 for $30. Your demo showed me this is an amazing machine!
I got a DX 27 for 2 bucks. When I opened it I also found a CS-80 and a JP-8 with the original manuals inside. Lucky me :)

A 27 is not exact the same. The 21 have the doubling voice performance function and pitch envelope generator .

My first synthesizer!! Many time ago. Nice work.
Sounds so gritty. FM is cool sounding.
All the dxs sound superb pure 80s
I bought the patch. Thank you very much.
God damn... Totally nailed the most bad ass tones.. will this work on ny dx 11? If so im definitely purchasing them! Great work!

That would be worth it. Nice sounds. How do you transfer into dx21? Midi dump?
Yes you can use free soft MidiOx to transfer them via midi.
Beautiful patches sir! I'm interested in buying your patches but im not sure how that works. Are the downloadable on the computer or on the synth itself?
Very easy, you download a free software called Midiox and transfet the patches to the synth. Plenty of tutorials on youtube :)
Can I use sysex librarian on Mac to install these patches? Bloody hell sounds so good I must have them!
Yes any software that reads and sends sysex files will work. For Pc Midiox is the most used, not sure on mac.

Hey there :) all the details are in the video description :) take care.
So is identical to a DX100?
Yes.
Sorry man, but it is not honest to demonstrate sounds using external effects processor. Especially when you are going to sell these patches.
Cheer up its only a delay....

He sends the patches same day. See? No delay.
You are right, are these patches sold with Strymon? No? So why should I care about how these patches sound with one in effects chain...
Behave yourself. Everyone uses effects knob
sounds very Jan Hammer Miami Vice
How to you get these sounds using just the synth
Not sure what do you mean ?
You cant. You need to add reverb and or delay.

yes the single bank should be compatible but dx100 is like Dx27 so no performance mode

Yes of course.
is it possible to get a pdf copy of the edits made to make these patches? then i can just manually adjust them myself on the synth?
