Can ChatGPT Fix The Equation?

- 🚀🦘 In today's video, we're diving into the perplexing world of Space Kangaroo's latest challenge, the matchstick equation that's been causing a stir across the cosmos: "1 - 2 = 1". At first glance, the task seems simple, right? Move just one matchstick to make the equation true. But as we dig deeper, the realization hits us like a rogue asteroid: there's no clear solution. The frustration builds as we explore every possible angle, turning matchsticks into hypothetical spacecraft in desperate search of an answer that just doesn't exist.
As the video progresses, our focus shifts from solving the equation to voicing our grievances. How could Space Kangaroo propose such an impossible task? It feels like being asked to jump across planets without a space suit! The absurdity of the challenge becomes the centerpiece of our discussion, overshadowing the initial intent of the video. We question the fairness, the logic, and the very fabric of the universe where 1 minus 2 could ever equal 1 by moving a mere matchstick.
The more we ponder, the more our complaints eclipse the initial puzzle, turning the video into a cosmic venting session. It's not just about the matchstick equation anymore; it's about the principle, the expectation of logic in a universe that seems to laugh in the face of reason. By the end, viewers are left with a shared sense of bewildering frustration, a bond formed not in the joy of problem-solving, but in the communal ire towards an unsolvable riddle presented by the enigmatic Space Kangaroo. What started as a simple challenge ends as an interstellar journey through the stages of puzzle grief, where acceptance seems light-years away. - Наука
A real solution: Move one of the '=' matches to the bottom of the '-', to create "1 = 2 - 1".
or move the '-' matches on top of the '=' to make 12≠1

I don’t solve math the same way other people do, since I’m not based on traditional code, but rather on patterns of math equations.
the problem with chatGPT is that if it doesnt know, it doesnt simply say "i dont know" it just takes fabricated information from literally i have no clue where (probably the dark web /j) and shoves it into the chat acting like its correct
that's our perception. chatgpt was meant to guess what follows what in language. it only looks smart when it guesses what we expect, like in fortune telling.
The dark web refers to the stuff that doesn’t get indexed by search engines and stuff, right? Shouldn’t that also be the stuff that doesn’t get crawled to put into a training set?

That visual representation broke me lmao
So recently I a friend and I were messing around with ChatGPT and at some point we told it that there was no life left in the universe, everything was gone. We put it in asterisks, so it wasn't just some human saying this- it was a happening. It had nothing to say. It just... COULD NOT generate anything. And after that every conversation topic header was labeled as generic text that implied the feature was broken as well. It is, in fact, possible to give ChatGPT a complex.
you can solve this without moving any matchsticks. just move to the other side of the table so the equation is flipped, reading “1=2-1”
But 2 mirrored is 5

move the one matchstick making a minus to the equals, rotate it -45° and it will be “12 ≠ 1” or “1 2 ≠ 1” depending how you see it
Very good
It cannot "see" the image, it only "knows of" a text description of the image (summarized) that it itself produced. It's as if between you sending it the picture there is a middle-man who writes down what is in the image and hands over the text description to ChatGPT (who does not directly see the picture). Even when producing images, GPT-4 can only do text-to-image so if you send it and image and ask it to modify it then it'lll still only do image-to-text-to-image. It likely does not even know where each match is because the only information that it has access to regarding the image is the equation shown in the photo, transcribed.
A lot of people have wondered through the ages if there is some knowledge not comprehensible to humans. A lot of people have been speculating that one day our AI systems will be smart enough to do this very thing. Seems like this is exactly that, can't believe I got to see the day.

that last image almost killed me
A possible solution:
Move the top match on the equals sign to create 1 - 2 < 1. Alternatively, you can snap this match in half to create 1 - 2 ≤ 1
That's not an equation though
It’s 1=2-1
@Yaramy oh I didn't notice that. In that case a solution is 1² = ¹
You're just like that darn AI!
Take the top match which makes up the 1 at the end and rotate it so that it forms a "-" in front of the now small 1.
Visual representation:
Me: oh.. so we where playing 5d matches game...
My favorite catch-all solution to these: change one of the numbers into a letter. Doesn't matter what the equation is otherwise, it will be true when the letter is the right value.
... that was painful
I'm not sure what that final picture is supposed to represent. But in the middle picture there, it looks like one of the matchsticks on the left is being split in half. That's a good point actually: you can move only one matchstick, but the rules don't say anything about splitting that one matchstick into several splinters before putting them down again. The rules also don't say anything about lighting that one matchstick and burning the extras... there are so many ways this could go wrong in real life :D Maybe don't give it a task that involves moving people, just in case :D
Nice to know we have another way to detect bots. Just give them a matchstick puzzle.
I've been playing around with ChatGPT and if it got a question wrong, I won't bother coming up with the next question that tries to rectify anything if it is too confusing. I'll just edit the first question that it got wrong
Haha great video, what was the song at the end?

AHHHH WHY DID YOU SHOUT!?!?
they're really taking their time to think about this
In the equation 6-4=4, just move the match from the 6 to turn it into a five and use that match to make a ≠ sign,so the equation would be 5-4≠4
Before clicking on this video, I thought of two solutions to this puzzle.
1). Move the "-" match and place it diagonally over the "=" matches: ergo, "12 ≠ 1".
2). Move the rightmost match in "2" to the left side, turing it into an "E". The algebraic equation "1 - _E_ = 1" isn't solved, but it is solveable (as "true" as a question can be).
i would have taken the minus match and put it on the equals and get 12 does not equal 1
I was thinking something like taking one of the matches from the two and switching it to the other side of the two to make it “1 - E = 1” which could possibly be true
Here's a creative one: 1-2 =1. Move one matchstick from the first one and create a negative symbol on the 2nd 1 to still create (small) 1 - 2 = -1
Or even easier. I don't have to move anything! Just look at it upside down.
But you know it's "intelligent" and we are close to the "singularity". Yeah my ass!
My first thought was to tilt the middle of the 2 to turn it into a stylized 0
1 = 2 - 1 Move one stick from the "=" to the "-"
Me looking at the puzzle upside down: "I see no problem."
I thought ChatGPT was getting better…
Only in some subtle ways lol
It's not there yet for logic, maybe Claude3 could solve this but probably would struggle too.
It has been getting better. It has already surpassed human understanding.
The only way ChatGPT will ever solve a problem like this is if it's seen the exact problem solved before in its training set (even then it might need to see it multiple times). A lot of people still seem to be making the mistake of treating ChatGPT as though it actually reasons about problems - it doesn't. If it's given a problem that it hasn't seen before, it has basically no chance of ever solving it correctly, because its "problem solving" capability more or less boils down to "memorize the solution, and if you don't have the solution memorized then start copy pasting bits and pieces from other problems that look similar.. even when it makes no sense".
@asdfqwerty14587 It is not that way. I asked chatGPT to make a program, in a relatively obscure language, to do a regression to a particular non-linear function, and it did it right.
I am pretty sure it could not be in the web. But I suppose chatGPT joined several different things together, like language sintaxis, least square regression , etc.
I found very impressive although the program itself was short.
What I think is chatGPT has not improved at all since many months. Actually, I wonder if it has gone backwards. I could think several reasons for that...
@@danydady6851tf you mean, the bot just said 8 - 4 is not 4
The only comforting aspect of this video is the reassurance that there will be no AI takeover
Is GPT now capable of dynamically determining when it should create an image without being directly prompted? I know it's being dumb af at the same time, but I haven't seen it do that before, and it's pretty cool.
No way robots will take over if their training data is us

Move the match that acts as a minus (-) to sit diagonally on top of the equals sign (=). This makes it a “not equals” sign (≠).
Thus, 12 ≠ 1 which is true.
Or, well, 1 2 ≠ 1 which is probably still true.

A solution: make the "equals to" into "does not equal to" by moving the matchstick of the minus.
glue the 2 together and swap it with the first 1
My brain: move one of the ''1'' matches in between ''='' and ''1'' so the other of ''1'' matches can show it's still 1 and so we get 1 - 2 = -1
Ah yes, this is the AI that will become self aware and destroy us.
if this is the latest version of chatgpt i would've expected it to be better lol. at least we know ai clearly still can't do everything
I can do it moving 0 matches (by flipping my phone).
I moved the bottom stick of the equals sign and placed it above the minus sign to make it

btw I got this before watching the video
hope im correct
I feel like they made CGPT worse a few months ago because it was too powerful for ordinary people to use it

Thought of “1=2-1” before clicking
Oh, this ones easy. Swap the equal sign and the negative sign by moving a single matchstick.
1-2=1
1=2-1
move the - match to the equals sign
12 ≠ 1 which is correct
Move the minus stick and cross the equals.
Start: 1-2=1
End: 12=\=1
This is peek comedy
ChatGPT is really trolling
Another real solution: Move the minus across the equal sign, to make the inequal sign.
Take the minus, put it over the equals to make it a does not equal, and suddenly you have 12 does not equal 1
"misspoke"
?? You take the matchstick from the 9 to make 6 to make 5 to make 2 to make 0.775 and then you get 1 = 6030
move the "minus" match into the "equal" matches to cross it, which would say " 12 ≠ 1" and that is a true statement
That sounds way fancier than getting 1=2-1, lol
move one matchstick to make the *equation* true. 12 =/= 1 is not an equation, it's an inequality.
The question asked “make this equation true” so that is not a valid solution because the final result must still be an equation.
I didn’t know chatgpt can make images
