FSU and Clemson - as the premier football powers in the conference - have landed a fatal blow on the ACC. No matter what ends up transpiring with the litigations (and how long they take), it’s safe to say both will end up in the P2 and remain competitive power programs going forward.
On a related note, it is sad to watch the “Tobacco Road” heritage diminish before our very eyes. It’s truly one of the more unfortunate casualties of the evolving college football power structure. The harsh truth is that basketball and other revenue sports do not match the remarkable and ever-growing value of college football. Programs like UNC, Duke, Kansas and others will in all likelihood take on tier 2 status in the evolving P2 framework. While the P2 may end up accommodating some of these programs, they will only serve as chum to the alphas in both the SEC and B1G. What remains to be seen is how basketball and other sports fare within the coming landscape. The internal struggles and financial problems in Chapel Hill make this all the more evident.

The way the playoffs are currently constituted (yea, I know that may not be for long) Notre Dame is in a pretty good spot if they finished undefeated
A 5 seed is often a waaaaaaay better position than the 2 or 3 (and in some cases the 1) seed if you go back and apply the 12 team CFP model over the last 10 years.
This is because of how the seeding is set up with automatic qualifiers from the G5, Big 12 and ACC.
    1) The 5 seed will get a home game against the G5 rep in almost every scenario. That's a home game gimme to the round of 8/quarterfinals.
    2) In the quarterfinals the 5 seed will play the 4 seed. The 4 seed is going to be the weakest P4 champ; so the Big 12 or ACC champ. That's the easiest draw to the semis as most years you'll be playing Utah, K State, etc instead of Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Bama, etc.
With how things are currently set up, with the auto bids, the 5 seed is by far the best route to the semis. The extra game you play will be a home game against a cupcake and the quarterfinal game will be against the weakest P4 champ. If you're the 1-4 seed, sure you'll get a bye, but you'll be playing a quarterfinal against the best At Large teams, which are almost certainly always going to be better than the Big 12 or ACC champ going forward. Would you rather play the second (or even third) best Big Ten or SEC team or the Big 12 champ? Or a champ from an ACC that is about raided of its best teams?
This is why auto bids have to be eliminated: it incentivizes finishing 5 over 1-4.

If the ACC falls apart, all the other sports will need a home. No other conference will make the same deal of quasi-independence like the ACC did with ND ten years ago. So if the ACC goes, ND has to join a conference, most likely the B10.
ND doesn’t care about never getting placed higher than 5th, they helped orchestrate the deal. They don’t have a conference game and it can give them a first round home game in South Bend. Both ADs this year expressed how they are fully ok with playing the same amount of games as everyone else.

Notre Dame should consider the SEC, because it would give them an extra recruiting advantage over the Big Ten schools in addition to its national following. Being the only Midwest school in the SEC would allow them to tell recruits in Big Ten country that they can play in the league where the most NFL draft picks play, ND has enjoyed some nice rivalries with Alabama, LSU, Texas, and Tennessee in football, and they had a great rivalry with Kentucky in basketball. @@fecat93 yea but playing some of these teams means nothing. Playing Stanford is a gimmick. The real reason Notre Dame plays Stanford is so that it's easy to schedule with USC. Every year these games rotate so ND last game of season is always in California. This type of stuff doesn't matter if ND was to join a conference. There is NO PURPOSE for Stanford. To be an "academic rival" NO THANKS. ND has played Northwestern a million times. That game means nothing. Northwestern is a small tier 4 program while ND is a blue blood team. We have only played Ohio State like 7 or 8 times. It's a much bigger RIVALRY between fans of these teams that live in the same areas compared to Pittsburgh. If you ask ND fans would you rather play Pitt or Penn State every year 9 our of 10 will say Penn State. We have had some REAL GOOD GAMES against Penn State. Just a couple games but enough to have a little history. Doesn't matter we played Pitt 50 times. That said Pitt does matter a little bit. Some of these teams like Indiana don't matter. There aren't alot of recruits in Indiana. The ones that are there already have ND #1 on their list. Georgia Tech MEANS SOMETHING. Not because it's an "academic rival". But its location in downtown Atlanta. When Notre Dame plays there even if Georgia Tech sucks the stadium will be packed because its Notre Dame they are playing. The game will be on TV, on the radio etc it brings exposure to the program to recruits down there.

As an Independent, Notre Dame will still be able to obtain a slot in the new playoffs, so long as they have a deserving record. The problem will be seeding and bye-weeks. If the Power conferences have automatic bids, and other Power 2, 3, or 4 have teams with better or similar records, not to mention the automatic Group of 5 bid, Notre Dame may be in a situation where they have to accept a lower seed and forgo a bye-week. The other other issue will be money. If it goes to a Power 2, Notre Dame may be compelled to go to a conference so they can partake in those huge contracts. Accepting a lesser contract from NBC just to keep Independent may not be feasible. That being said, I hope Notre Dame finds a way to stay Independent.

Plus, why would any P2 school vote for more expansion right now? It is definitely in everyone of their best interests, to let non P2 teams whither and die...especially FSU and ND. Why would they "let them die" when they could add them to their conference and get EXPOSURE with recruits in that area and maybe a team like a Nebraska or Penn State can pull a couple more players out of Florida.
