  • The tornado is rain-wrapped in the darker cloud observed past my shop building. Standing on my front porch near Smith Lake. The warning siren is approximately 150 feet from my house and is ear shattering. This is approximately 5 minutes before it entered the city of Cullman. Minutes before it was preceded by another tornado along the same general track. Preliminary reports indicate light - moderate damage with very extensive hail damage in an area just south of the city of Cullman, Alabama as well as the city itself. Over 200 cars totaled at the local Nissan dealership. This same storm has caused extensive damage in Jacksonville, Alabama. Support teams (Mutual Aid) are now deploying to the university there and the surrounding areas. Nothing more than rain and hail at my house. No damage. The link is a screen shot of the weather radar taken during this video. The purple is the hail core which went on to cause millions of dollars in damages. The black circle depicts the location of the tornado as it traveled from north-west to south-east. The purple represents the likely massive amount of hail. imgur.com/3Gjz09x

    • @logan1572
      @logan1572  3 года назад +1

      If referring to the other siren in the background, I mentioned it in a reply I believe. No one has ID'd it here but I'm fairly certain it's the same model. Miles away with mostly forest it must penetrate therefore the sound should be muffled. I do know its location and the "horn" is the same as mine.

    That's rare to hear a Whelen in attack mode. When it comes to storms, attack usually means that there's large hail in it.

    • @logan1572
      @logan1572  6 лет назад

      As the siren blasts and rotates, it's very eerie no matter how many times you've been through it. Though only certain areas are under threat, the sirens activate county-wide which is pretty dumb. And having one erected next to your house ain't a bunch of fun (lol).

    • @bluegrasssirens1938
      @bluegrasssirens1938 6 лет назад

      I understand when having a siren near you would be unpleasant, but on days like yesterday it proved its worth by alerting people to danger before it happened.

    • @logan1572
      @logan1572  6 лет назад

      It does however it's very antiquated and technologically-deprived and outdated. For example, if an area 10 square miles is in the path of possible danger, the entire county (755 square miles) gets the warning sirens. 99% of the citizens in the clear are freaking and the 1% who are in danger are outdoors pointing at the sky (lol). They could "sound" the sirens based on the "polygons" issued by the National Weather Service which is much more precise. But they take the lazy way out.Folks who get warning for their locations (electronic devices) receive those based on the NWS polygons. Much more accurate and safe.
      Sirens were designed for folks outdoors. Very common for those indoors to not hear a siren at all. Especially in rural areas. And that doesn't even factor in the lack of maintenance on them which is expensive.
      Weather radios and electronic devices are the way to go if the goal is to maximize human safety. But regarding accuracy, NOAA weather radio warnings are barely any better than sirens except you can hear it on your nightstand in the middle of the night. They do use Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) technology that "can" be a little more area-specific, but pale in comparison to polygons which can actually narrow an endangered area down to a city block. No comparison. Electronic notifications and streaming are the only way to go. Lastly then I'll stifle, we experienced a very deadly and massive tornado outbreak on 27 April 2011. By far, the most lives saved were do to social media, specifically Twitter and Facebook.

      Had them again last light for about 3 hours or so intermittently. A house trailer totally destroyed a little north of me. One of those deals where it was a "small chance" of twisters. I normally listen to the tv with the volume set on 14. With the siren I need to hit 90 to hear the meteorologist.

      two adults one 7-year old, one 3-week old infant hospitalized. "Non-life threatening injuries" reported. "Only" an EF1 but looked like a bomb exploded. Stormy as I type this.
      Correction / Update: Local news this evening reported it was a mother and the 2 children. The 7 year old was found face down in the yard and the baby remained clutched in the mother's arms from the get go. Tornado has now be rated as an EF2.

    For clarity, I was nowhere near being in the path of the tornado. Additionally, though the following link shows April instead of March, it appears to originate from a position just north of the Cullman county line in the neighboring county of Morgan, showing a bit of definition to the funnel as it moves to his left. Relative to the storm, if I was at the 7 o'clock position, it appears he was somewhere between 11 and 2 o'clock. ruclips.net/video/d4npNNliWJg/видео.html
