2000 was the year I moved to the US with my soon to be American wife. I still miss my friends and walking to the pub on a Friday night and I will always be a Stockport kid. I used to live in Offerton and I've walked hundreds of times the path that this film takes....very hard on my emotions right now Anyway...hope to get back soon to enjoy a beer or two in the Gardeners Arms in Offerton. Cheers all. JRB Canton, Texas
Just watched this video hoping to see someone I know, to my surprise my mum came into shot all wrapped up shopping with her trolley. Very poignant as it’s her birthday today and this should have been her 100th birthday. 🥰. Mum died in 2008. Thank you for sharing with me this unforgettable snapshot of her shopping in the indoor market hall. 👏👏
Happy to do it, Diane. Video is worth it’s weight in gold when it can bring things like this to people . It’s the closest thing we have to a time machine. Cheers.
I was looking for my dad he used to clean most of the shops windows, he would carry his ladders all over stockpot, edgeley, Cheadle areas including a lot of the pubs ❤️ lovely you saw your mum ☺️💐❤️ xxx
Thank you for this great video . I lost my nana last year , i came across this video a few months after and to my suprise I see my nan shopping in the market ! Amazing and means the world . Thank you
Remember all this very well use to go with my gran and grandad every saturday shopping into Stockport, now there is hardly nothing there, more of a ghost town. Brilliant video brought back some great memories thank you
Wow I searched Stockport in 2000 and this came up! I was born in 1999 grew up in Romiley. Love Stockport shame about the market it used to be so lively wow!
Born in Stockport 1958, left in 77 to get married, never lived there since. Go back sometimes as still have family there. This reminds me of Stockport when I was growing up. I used to have a Saturday job on the market. Oh Memories.. how time flies....
Looked for my late Mam - she was always bobbing about the town - but didn't spot her. Great record of a moment in time of my (slightly grubby) home town.
When i was kid, i used to run off all the time from home, stockport town centre was my playground. Its pretty surreal seeing it how it was back then. Im 30 now.
Was going to say wow going back in time, but actually nearly 20 years on Stockport looks pretty much the same. Which speaks volumes. Major redevelopment needed.
New bus station getting implemented with a rooftop garden, new apartments, new shops are coming in and red rock opened a couple of years ago with the new gym
I grew up in reddish live in leigh now near Wigan x I remember going on the market every sat with my mum x she always bought me an outfit for my barbie doll there was a stall what sold dolls outfit x also does anyone remember mathers pet shop we got our dog from there x
Does anyone remember a shop on the A6 opposite McDonald's roughly with a sign that said "COAL The Fuel Of The Future". Must have been there until the mid 90s.
County Books kickstarted my kid's education. The Market is history nowadays, more or less. I'm still drawn back to Stockport, but I rarely bother tbh because of the parking charges. So many better places these days with free parking. Most of the decent shops have gone. Past times happened so quickly while we was sleeping!
Used to be a really good night out in Stockport, had many good nights in the club and bars up near the cinema. All gone now, such a shame. Redrock is a welcome addition but more needs to be done
Hi Joe. As well as the nightclubs near the cinemas. You may be referring to one I think was called "dungeons " did you ever go to a disco on the other side of stocky near where sainsburys is now. I remember it was called rats. But became a Great club in the very early 80s renamed "Rumours" does that ring a bell?
Great vid I grew up in Melbourne came back to Blighty 1977. Joined the RN married a girl from Stockport ,Live about 4 miles away now in Haughtongreen, Denton. Know all the places and the pubs lol
Thank you so much for this video Paul. It brought back many happy memories for me. Pity that 90% of the shops have now closed and we don't have an outdoor market anymore, although they still put the "best small market" sign out on market days. Historical Market?.... they are joking. I totally agree with your remarks about the River Mersey. It's always been a disgrace and now with the new development and opening up the river they are going to have to do something about the mess and stink. I for one don't fancy sitting by the side of it having a drink and something to eat. This Council needs shooting!
Didn't they film the movie 'Yanks' w/Richard Gere there in the late 70s? This brought back memories from the early '80s when I worked at the Merseyway Food Market & played snooker at that club by the railway arches, haven't been there since, is it still like this today? Been Stateside for 33yrs now, presently in Naples, FL.
It’s nice to see a full view of Stockport’s ’ICONIC VIADUCT’ because now they seem hell bent on blocking its full outline by putting up tower blocks in front of it. I’m all for progression but not at the cost of spoiling an iconic view.
You wouldn't think this is nearly a quarter of a century ago! No Facebook, Instagram or twitter. The internet was just getting started proper, Simpler times.
Not sure why this makes me feel so nostalgic when I wouldn't be born for another 3 years and I still live in Stockport which still looks pretty much identical to how it did in 2000
Memories of the indoor market. As a kid, used to like the stall selling tiny chickens. Bet Stockport is noisy these days with aircraft passing over low every few minutes.
Even then it was going like a ghost town but its far worse now. Completely dead. My dear grandad (stockport born and bread) would turn in his grave if he could see the state of it now ...really sad
The English Society once headed by (maybe still is) no other than John England provided the last flag, going to see if we c an get a new one doesn't look right without !
We've only got blossoms success left to be proud about! And ironically that happens just as all the pubs that originally put bands on shut down? So it must've been the necessity of having to play bars in manchester that got them noticed!!!!
A combination of the smoking ban in 2007, shopping on the net and the council taking back handers to put shit in the town centre no one wants is what will be the end of stockport!!!!
Oh glorious days ahead, when finally takeover inshallah... we will spare your leftwing men to be our slave but those against turn into kebab oh ho ho he he he

What a stroll down memory lane! It's changed so much now, I was just there a few weeks back. Thank you for sharing.
Really? Majority of it looks exactly the same to me. The centre of Stockport has been in serious need of redevelopment for years now.
Blimey Paul! That brought back some memories! Thank you so much.
