Everybody has a limit to where they start to feel the effects of altitude sickness. I spent a night once at 12,500 ft in preparation for bagging a peak in Yosemite NP. I felt a little headache and had trouble sleeping, but that's about it. Living at sea level then going to 10,000 feet or more, always affects performance.
