We love SUVs. Sorta. - The Carmudgeon Show - Ep. 19

  • There aren’t many, but there are some SUVs that Derek and Jason love. And they have one thing in common: authenticity. They’re all trucks in the traditional sense - Land Rover Defender, Range Rover Classic, Lamborghini LM002, Mercedes G-Class, Suzuki Sidekick and Geo Tracker, and of course the TJ Jeep Wrangler.
[NOTE: This episode was recorded in early March 2020 before the Coronavirus Social Distancing measures went into effect. We're glad to help stave off boredom while you #ShelterInPlace - anything to keep you home and keep you safe. Stay well, all of you. Love and distant kisses from all of us at ISSIMI.]
In this episode, we discuss why real-world buyers prefer SUVs - and even theorize that their desirability comes from a concept discussed in the movie The Devil Wears Prada. We also discuss how we know the Ferrari Purosangue (which means “pureblood” in Italian) is the exact opposite of its name, even without having seen it; why the Lamborghini Anus (Urus) is insulting on the face of it, and why Derek didn’t love his Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, even though it did everything well.
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on RUclips alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

The Touareg is still available in a new generation outside of the US. I guess VAG doesn't want to canibalize Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne sales in the US (which are built on the same platform).
In the long run VW probably makes an error, as they did with the delaid VW Arteon lauch, which was availiable for quite some time in Europe (just started in the US). Furthermore they did not develop a Turbo VR6 engine which would have helped Golf R, Arteon R, Tiguan R as well as Atlas and US-Passat (both of which are not sold in Europe) sales in the US and for enthousiasts in Europe.
Again in sight of stingent EU emissions regulations I would have been an investment but very much worth the effort for image and brand identity purposes (much like the Kia Stinger 3.3-Turbo V6 is).

You gotta admit they are doing a much better job of it though. They also aren't being as cheap about it as GM, they look much more distinctive than GMs badge jobs, eg the golf r is a hatch where the S3 is a sedan, the Q5 and Macan look completely different even in silhouette. GM would use the same body in white and just change things like the hood and bumpers while VW cross platforms the underpinnings and uses completely different body stampings. Cross platforming is fine by me when the platform itself is excellent as is the case with MQB and MLB.

    • @jsquared1013
      @jsquared1013 4 года назад

I was about to say the exact same thing. Plus the money from VAG to do the development paid for the Leipzig plant and test tracks and essentially the first few years of Cayenne production were at cost, so HUGE profit margin (since R&D didn't have to be amortized, as daddy VW paid for it all). There was an article about it in Christophorus ages ago. Then the money coming in from Cayenne also financed the federalization of the GT3 and funded the Carrera GT project.

Yes Jason - Hyphen is correct!...The Touareg is no longer available in the US for two model years. I owned a 2004 Touareg for about 6 months. It was so heavy (6000+lbs?) that it qualified for George Bush's Accelerated Depreciation program designed to promote sales of industrial cranes, bulldozers and farm equipment. It got 9 mpg and went through tires every 3000 miles. On canyon roads at speeds around 30 miles per hour it was quite similar to riding an elephant.

Upper trim Cavaliers cost more than Monte Carlos, Caprices and even Cutlass Supremes and loaded up they cost about $11k.They weren’t class leading, but competitive. The Cimarron started at $12k and it’s main differences were better paint, leather seats, and additional insulation. They weren’t terrible, but they weren’t great either.
I think it’s a false equivalence to say the Cayenne is as similar to a Touareg (which isn’t sold here) as the Cayenne looks substantially different, and Porsche applies a pretty significant amount of change to it. Also the transmission in the base Macan is an Audi DSG.

Oh come on now, no mention of the Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution? Homologation special RALLY 3-door SUV, 3.5 liter V6 with like 275 hp, proper 4wd with diffs all around/selectable drive modes and completely bespoke suspension. Wider track all around, wide body kit, the works. They're SO cool

Jason, I agree 100% with your view on SUV's, especially regarding gen pop. The authentic SUV you left off your list that may be the best allrounder, from on road ability to reliability to zombie apocalypse, is the Nissan Xterra Pro 4X.

I’m still a very young driver and my parents have a 2018 Toyota 4Runner and a 2018 Audi RS3, I hate driving the 4Runner, I feel too big, I feel unnecessary, it feels dumb and stupid, that RS3 is a treat to me as it’s super easy to handle around town, it’s small, it’s fast if I need it, I’d much rather a golf or a really small hatch over an SUV

We have a suv as my wife's daily mainly because it's a do it all vehicle for us, it's big enough for our two dogs, tents ect. We use the 4wd alot as well because in the south we still have alot of dirt roads that we kill cars lol. Also I have a bad knee from football and it's so much easier on me. Of course I still have a boosted NC Miata in the garage lol.

Okay so just got around to listening to this. So as someone who dailies an 06 s2000 I personally don't want an SUV but wife has been asking for one for years. I tried getting away with an e91 wagon with m-sport handling package but she is now complaining it is to low. So IDK mazda cx-3 Cx-5 or used Porsche Macan? Need something that will can go around corners so I can live with it

The LM was insane. I'm trying to find the description the great Welsh car writer, David LLewellyn, penned for it...
Lambo lost any "outrageous" cred when Audi bought them. You want that, buy a Pagani. You want a fast Audi, sell off that small country you annexed 30 years ago and get a Chiron.
