I love that Smiles A Lot gets his first kill as a warrior and reacts with remorse. I would think that he will end up being a medicine man. His heart is to good to take lives.
The clever plot of the film practically guarantees that the viewer will cheer for the Indians and see the fate of the soldiers as well deserved. There is a lot of nuance in this film, and that is part of its brilliance.
absolutely brilliant..very significant scene with Smiles a Lot at the end when he kills the soldier..boy grapples with his emotions and the realisation of being a warrior and death..just brilliant
This movie is so beautiful, I always forget about it when I'm listing my favorites but it's virtually flawless. I tear up during the two socks scene every time :'(
Without question my favorite part of the movie. Killing Cisco, capturing John, and shooting Two Socks builds this hatred in you for the soldiers and this scene made you feel the ultimate sense of revenge. I like how Kevin C made it a complete wipeout and none of the indians died.

The moment Wind in His Hair 😍 appears at full gallop at 4:19 is amazing, but they should have made it the opening shot in the scene. The whole audience would have jumped to their feet cheering !
Did you go take a crap during the scene where he was shaving? And if you’re talking about the indigenous Americans they didn’t have to shave. We are very lightly covered in fur! Not like the white animals that are covered almost entirely in fur! The only place the white man is lacking in fur is on top of their head!!
this movie also showed that there really are some decent caucasians, trying to understand with GREAT sympathy and maybe even envy for what others have destroyed.
I love how you summarized all of the shit the Union put Dunbar through, killing his horse, beating him, shooting Two Socks, all leading up to the Souix kicking their asses, lol.
That Bareback leap from a horse, to a full scale run, into a leap off a 10'foot ledge into a shallow creek was Amazing!........ I tried leaping off my horse once at full gallop and all I got was a mouth full of dirt! Lol

The first soldier shot with an arrow, the guy with dark hair who was basically just doing his job.. and was a decent person.. that guy John Dunbar takes pity on and instructs that Indian not to defile his corpse.. that guy was basically John himself.. a decent man, doing what he thought was right because he believed in the USA army.. John saw himself in him
At least Cisco died immediately in the book. Also in the book, some soldiers out hunting shot Two Socks and put him in the back of a wagon. DWW was allowed to be down at the creek-guarded by one guy. Two soldiers picked up Sock’s body and started chasing another soldier around. DWW nearly killed one of them before they were able to stop him.
Great scene, the Lieutenant (the one that got killed first) I thought was the decent one out of the bunch. If memory serves me correctly (in a deleted scene) after all of the soldiers get killed, one of the natives was about to scalp the Lieutenant but Dunbar grabbed his arm and motioned him not to. Thumbs up and cheers :)
There was a bugler in the Fetterman's fight who fought to the death with his bugle. The Braves were impressed so much so that he wasn't mutilated, he would be whole in the after life. In fact, he was wrapped in a buffalo blanket.
@@mnpo8987 That is one of the ultimate honours, to be wrapped in a Buffalo blanket. It keeps you warm in your four day journey to the afterlife. The presents were most likely food and other things he would need for the journey too.
Somebody just posted SIOUX and Lakota are the same. Lakota are the same as the Sioux, but there are many Sioux tribes, the Cheyenne River Sioux, pine Ridge, Ogallala, Standing Rock etc
I'm having mixed feelings for them right now, I should hate the Lakota Sioux Indians for what they done to my own Great Plains tribe and people; The Pawnee (Genocide, enslaving, etc...we were conquered as a whole). Then again, I am also one of them, a distant Siouan-Speaking cousin, a Catawba Indian. I honestly can't decide whether to be happy for them or not, it seems like a no-brainer, but my case scenario suggests otherwise
Grow up son. Im a new zealand maori and i carry genes from tribes that attacked my people. I have no issue with that whatsoever. Our ancestors, mine and yours both lived in a very different world to this one. To carry those "take" (taa-ke) issues into today is to deny their struggle. On both sides.
@TheKillabeast86 I think "Smiles a lot" the kid, killed him, not wind in his hair, the guy on the horse. He did pistol whip him, I think of it as sweet revenge.
too late in the indian wars the braves realized to get in close and mix it up..not to stand off and trade volleys with the whites...the exact same tactic the NVA used with americans many years later...
Still waiting on the Sequel, Mr. Costner. I know there's a novel, but I'ld like to see it in a motion picture or mini series. You know, like what Madalorean did for Star Wars.

Siskel and Ebert gave it 2 thumbs down. Then it took 7 Academy Awards. They didn't know squat. I love this flick.
I love that the “good trade” guy with Dances With Wolves hat has come to respect him so much that he came to free DWW.
I grew up watching this as youngster. Now, as an adult, still love it...
2:58, totally awesome move. Seamless moving from horseback, to running, to jumping on the union guy. This was one heck of a stunt.

Yes, I have since changed my mind about this. I think it was Mars Attacks.
Just kidding! I did like Mars Attacks though.
Think how different this 32-year-old movie would look if it were made with today's technology.
