Rachmaninoff: Romance for Violin and Piano in A minor (with score)

  • Sergei Rachmaninov’s first ever composition wasn’t an epic piano workout, it was this gorgeous Romance for violin.
It’s not even blessed with a proper Opus number, but Rachmaninov’s Romance in A minor for violin and piano would surely stand up against his later, more famous works. It's thought it was written sometime in the 1880s, when the composer would've been a teenager at the oldest - it could even have been written before he even reached double figures. Like so many of Rachmaninov’s great works, melody is the star here. Just lock into that violin line and follow it all the way: it’s a treasure trove of delightful chromatic lines and expert phrasing.

Marvelous, already as a teenager, he has this artistic overview and knowlegde how to make a masterpiece, yes I agree his melodic qualities are prominent although his vast harmonic landscape is also touching the surface here, the gigantic harmonic structures are revealing very rapidly in his coming production. A genius.

At around 5:14, the sheet music doesn't seem to match up with the audio. The audio shifts up an octave for the last two repetitions of the pattern C B A C, but the sheet music doesn't indicate that change.

@@cygnus2201might be a choice of the performer or a different edition. Another example: The Legende by Wieniawski. Some editions don’t write a sordini marking at the end but sotto voce. Also in my edition the last note of the last arpeggio is notated an octave lower without an 8va marking, because it would have reached into the line above. Nonetheless it is clear, that it should be played an octave higher than notated.
