I’m using my kite aerial photography rig that I use with my larger cameras. You can see some more detail about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/Aa3hI4DICsw/видео.html
I'm glad that you made this video because we are going to the UAE soon and they don't allow non-citizens to use drones. We had the idea of using one of our kites by just attaching the gopro. I think that to keep it facing in the right direction maybe a streamer would keep it facing whichever way we want it to face. You have a really nice setup but we are using a much smaller kite that we can travel with (it looks more like a parachute). That way no sticks get broken during traveling. Thank you for making the video.
Glad you found it helpful. I have some smaller soft kites like the one you describe that are great for traveling. I am usually lifting a much bigger camera with my kite so the larger kites are needed when I travel. The kite should work well for you in the UAE, just be careful of any laws that would prohibit aerial photography in some areas.
Susending it further down the line was a method I hadn't considered. I've also made a passively stabilised gimbal for my.gopro in the past, I suspect the two might work well together.
@Evan Reinheimer >>> Regarding that _"horizon leveling"_ feature: If the _field of view_ of the *GoPro* camera dips below the horizon -- such as from tilting your KAP rig -- will the camera _still_ maintain the equivalent of a _lever horizon?_
You should get a loop reel, letting out string is super smooth as you just let the kite pull and have the loop spin off the line it needs... No more jaggy hand over hand...
Thanks for this new video on the GoPro H9. Why didn’t you test the camera in higher resolutions, aside from the fact that the stabilization is accomplish with sensor cropping? Do you have a video on how you assembled your current picavet mount rig? I have a kite and a ZV-1, but haven’t bought/built the picavet rig yet. Mostly flying DJI M2P and MA2, but I want to capture some footage from the National Mall in DC with the camera kite.
Filming in higher resolutions for RUclips presents more challenges than benefits to me. The file size is also exponentially larger compared to a very minor increase in quality when shown on RUclips. This video is a basic overview of my KAP rig: ruclips.net/video/VEq4W042vvk/видео.html
I did! I started flying kites around 3 years old, also the same age that I started taking photographs. It took me another 20 years to think about doing them at the same time.
Very cool. Thanks so much for doing this video. It has me very encouraged that using the Insta360 ONE R 360 camera will have similar results. The nice thing about 360 is that I won't have to point it in a direction since it's getting completely stable 1080 in all directions at the same time. Thanks for showing what the Hero 9 looks like. I'm really impressed with their horizon leveling and their audio is amazing.
You're welcome, thanks for watching! I think the Insta360 will provide similar results as well, and like you said, it's easier to select your direction. The audio on the Hero 9 is MUCH better than previous GoPros, not perfect, but definitely usable!
I have a rig that has a servo motor on top. I can operate the servo with a remote control from the ground. This video will show you the rig in some more detail: ruclips.net/video/VEq4W042vvk/видео.html
Hmm...that's a good question. I'm not sure if it will take photos at the same time as shooting video. My guess is no, because there is only one "shutter button" that controls the rec/stop while filming...but I'm not 100% sure that it's not possible. I've rarely been impressed by video stills as photos, but for web use they are probably fine. You can set the GoPro to take photos at intervals which would make auto-KAP very easy with this camera.
Yes, but not through the GoPro. Here is what I currently use, but working on a new system that will hopefully be ready soon: ruclips.net/video/3fvcGw1-XnY/видео.html
I thought about doing something similar with a 8mm movie camera, over 50 years ago. The GoPro in this video is so much better. Those acient movie cameras were a joke.
Evan, imagine if the Ukrainians did this they could monitor main roads and areas of Russian movements with white or sky blue kites, can you do a video, could you encrypt the videos
Excellent video...the 9 looks very promising. I was redirected here from one of your other videos where we had some back and forth about video stabilization. I just got the Go Pro 8 (just days before the release of Go Pro9...was not aware a new model was forthcoming), and I THINK the 8 has horizon leveling as well. I also got a lightweight gimbal ( FeiyuTech WG2X) for even more stabilization. I have yet to try it out, but I think it's very promising for smooth video. This guy used them as a combo and got really good results, I think. He was using the Go-Pro 7 and a similar gimbal: ruclips.net/video/4dJzWJNplio/видео.html
Glad you're moving forward with your KAV idea. The hypersmooth on the Hero 8 is outstanding and should produce very similar results. Looking forward to seeing what you are able to do with that combo!
how do you turn the camera?

@@EvanReinheimer is it possible to use a gimbal?
@@chrischungy I don't see why not. I don't have a gimbal, so I'm not sure how to rig a remote to it. But if you can do that, I'm sure it would work.
That _'steadying feature'_ on the GoPro is IMPRESSIVE.

I like the rig! Is that commercially available ?
They are. Look up Kite Aerial Photography.
this is comical that you only have 600 subscribers, its a top quality video, come on youtube start spreading the news
hahaha...thanks!
RUclips does that a lot. It doesn't matter to them how nice the video is.
I must try this soon!!!!
👍👍
Taking some notes as I plan to do some variation of this for some upcoming videos.
Awesome! Hope it helped.

@Evan Reinheimer >>> Regarding that _"horizon leveling"_ feature: If the _field of view_ of the *GoPro* camera dips below the horizon -- such as from tilting your KAP rig -- will the camera _still_ maintain the equivalent of a _lever horizon?_
Yes. It’s controlled by gravity not by optically sensing the horizon.
@@EvanReinheimer >>> Cool -- Thanks for the info.

I have one. I prefer this kind or reel even though it’s not nearly as popular. It also fits in my travel bag easier than the loop.

I used a basic big-box store diamond to lift my phone back in middle school so that delta is definitely more than enough for lifting the go pro lol
It for sure is! I usually lift a Sony A7r4 with heavy Zeiss lens using that kite. It’s one of my favorites.
Excellent!
Awesome rig man! :^)
Thanks 😄
Evan just curious if when you were a kid - did you love kite flying. ? When did you start ?
I did! I started flying kites around 3 years old, also the same age that I started taking photographs. It took me another 20 years to think about doing them at the same time.
thanks. I do volunteer work in disaster recovery. Many times we can't fly a drone to get situational awareness videos. However, a kite is an option.
That’s a definite practical use.

Can you please put up a parts list for the rig that surrounds the go-pro? The case, servo, transmitter, etc. If you have time...thx

Definitely lightweight gimbal, little extra weight may stabilize the camera more. No more picavet unless the wind is real steady.
Great video from that GP9. Can it take stills too while doing video or are you able to get decent stills from the video by pausing?!?

@@EvanReinheimer I think you can grab stills from the video at 14mp.Info from a Gopro 9 review
Great job 👍👍👍

Does shooting KAV with this type of _GoPro_ make your video work _"Heroic"?_
{I will see myself to the door now...😉}
