  • Six years after Dygma launched the crowdfunding campaign of the Dygma Raise back in Dec 2017, we went beyond keyboard ergonomics as
    Luis talked us through what he had envisioned for Dygma all these years.

      @@robbyjvc i have one since 11.2023 and it is fabulous. It has some bugs as it is still new thing but they fix them.
      I use only this keyboard since I got it and I love it. But first few weeks were hard, especially to type passwords that are mix of chars and symbols.
      I was modifying layout many times a day but now I have stable layout and modify it few times a month.
      Typing with all fingers os required on this type of keyboard so learning apps how to touch type with all fingers were very helpful for me.

    Very interesting interview. I loved him saying that work and non-work (exercise and gaming) can keep you performing at an optimum level. Many people today forget this and burn themselves out, sometimes even encouraging others to do the same.

    EXCELLENT interview and conversation!!! I appreciate the question/answer session regarding switching from a staggered layout to a columnar layout (I will be in this situation...).
    I hope that the simplificaiton of SKUs and choices leaves at least ONE additional color option besides silver and black! I wonder if in the future that you could switch to an order-on-demand type of system for customers who want more color options.
    Naturally this will take time to be received, manufactured, etc. but it still gives customers options for having a unique keyboard (color-wise anyway) 😁

    Thanks Dygma! I’m happy to say that I was able to switch from a regular keyboard to using the Defy full time within a mere 2 weeks. I’m still making some mistakes, but there is significant daily improvement.
    Two small issues I’ve encountered: When my Windows 10 laptop from 2015 wakes up (both from hibernation and also from a complete cold start) with a wired keyboard connection, the keyboard doesn’t connect properly. The number row lights up blue. It’s only a minor nuisance, since pulling out the cable from the USB port and reconnecting it fixes the problem.
    Another thing I’ve noticed is that when you disconnect the cable from one half, the key LEDs of the other half seem to switch to full brightness. (I’m using the latest firmware.) This is no problem for me, but I though you’d like to know.
    Happy new year to everyone!

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi!! Thank you!
      For the first issue, try pressing ESC. The blue number row means you're using Bluetooth (yes, you can do that with wired too).
      For the second, check the LED brightness in the wireless menu. When you disconnect one side, the keyboard switches to wireless LED brightness.

    • @FrankPloegman
      @FrankPloegman 6 месяцев назад

      @@DygmaLab Thanks. Pressing ESC worked to switch from bluetooth to wired on startup. However, the keyboard should not be switching to bluetooth in the first place, since the wireless switches of both halves are set to off. (The help article on your website titled ‘How to connect to RF or Bluetooth on the Defy’ uses the term ‘wireless switch’ and not ‘battery switch’. This difference is important in this discussion.)
      I think that both wireless switches in the off position should put the whole keyboard in airplane mode. That does not seem to be happening at the moment.
      I’m quite familiar with Bazecor and using version 1.3.9, but can’t find the wireless menu you are talking about.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  5 месяцев назад +1

      @FrankPloegman yes, that was UX mistake on our side. Those switches are really on/off switches for the battery. We'll review our website. Thanks.
      Being able to use Bluetooth wired is a feature that many people have requested. We could disable it, but it's useful if you want to connect to your laptop or ipad while using the keyboard wired.

    • @FrankPloegman
      @FrankPloegman 5 месяцев назад

      @@DygmaLab I understand it better now after more thought. The wireless switches really are wireless switches, but only for the communication between the segments and the neuron, not between the neuron and other devices. Having the ability to use Bluetooth over a fully wired connection is non-obvious but desirable. I would suggest the following:
      1. Especially for brand new users, it’s a bad experience if their fully wired keyboard doesn’t connect properly to a device that is starting up. The neuron should have a longer time-out in waiting for a response from the connected device. It could go to Bluetooth in the meantime, but as soon as the wired connected device responds, that should become the default connection.
      2. It would be nice to have airplane mode available (which would switch off wireless functionality of the neuron). This could be achieved through Bazecor or a command that could be programmed onto the keyboard. Preferably this state would persist: If the keyboard shuts down in airplane mode, it should go back to airplane mode after startup.
      Thanks for all your hard work. I’m loving my Defy.

    One question thou:
    Can i remap a key on the Bazecor to turn the Defy On/Off so it can safe Battery? Or does it automatically turns itself off after some amount of time?

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  6 месяцев назад +1

      You can customize the amount of time it takes to turn off automatically. You can configure that in the preferences menu for wired, and in the wireless menu for wireless 😊

  • @eldelacajita
    @eldelacajita 6 месяцев назад

    As a user I'm kind of glad you have been ambitious with your products (less releases, more features and polish) even if that has made the production more difficult to manage. Not sure that going the "release often with smaller increments" way is more desirable and sustainable if you look beyond the management perspective. There's probably a balance to be achieved there.

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  5 месяцев назад +1

      I think Luis' and our point is that maybe we bit more than we could chew: the Defy was a huge leap forward in many ways: mechanical, electronics and firmware. Maybe it could have been a bit less revolutionary in some aspects. Like maybe we didn't need RGBW LEDs, or reverse-tilting + tenting combinations...

  • @babybloc
    @babybloc 6 месяцев назад

    Simplifying to reduce the unsustainable number of SKUs is really inspiring
    “Let’s keep our company alive!” Good idea 👍
    And realizing that the Defy had too many big technological leaps in it, which probably led to a lot of the delays
    (And many fun videos about the features causing delays: Tenting, RGBW, Wireless/Underglow…)
    That’s a wiser person talking after hard lessons
    I see a lot of those same technologies in the Raise 2. But, I guess if you’ve got them all in the Defy, putting them into an updated Raise may not be so much of a leap
    Also, thanks for the advice about temporarily removing the inner column of Defy keycaps. That’s a clever idea, as my hands have been settling on the wrong row getting started💡

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  6 месяцев назад +1

      The Defy has been a tough journey both in design and manufacturing. The Raise 2 shouldn't, as all the big leaps and learnings have already taken place, but manufacturing always finds a way to proving itself hard 😅

    • @DygmaLab
      @DygmaLab  5 месяцев назад

      We only do very small incremental improvements in each production batch, but they are normally not worth changing your keyboard. Our goal is that you can buy a keyboard that you enjoy for years to come. And every now and then we do a big revision or new product, like the Dygma Raise 2 (the OG was from 2017).

    I wouldn't agreed on the "What you'd have done differently" chapter. Having a small improvement on early stage for a newly establish company won't be success. What apple did now was small hardware improvement because they have build a strong reputation with a strong software ecosystem. Back those days, Apply was aggressive on hardware and software innovation. Another example was Nokia. Dygma's success was due to the huge innovation between Raise to Defy. In short, pumping a huge money into R&D for a company success.
    PS: What i would have done differently? Cutting down customization choices to increase production rate while continuously creating innovation.

    • @DygmaLab

      That's an interesting point you make, one that we've discussed through and through. Innovation will continue to be a core value of Dygma, but we need to be careful that we don't bite more than we can chew (like with with the Defy 6048 customization options 😅).
