Very Promising Cold War Naval Game - Sea Power

- Sea Power is a naval game unlike any other current naval game. It reminds me of Dangerous Waters from way back in the day. And it looks extremely promising.

How many ships can you identify in the video? I used to be able to tell you exactly what ship was which... 15 years ago.
You're still a young man, don't despair ^^
Me, myself once tried to draw a ship class and adding it's characteristics along with its specifications and history in a Notebook .... I just separate the World War I,II and the Cold War era ships .... I make it like a German Submarines Identification Book
Did you every play a game called harpoon Mr stealth? Updated version of that would be great!
The "Frigate, no Cruiser" was the Destroyer Spruance. 😄 I don't know by heart when it got various upgrades (data annexi of old board and miniature games like Harpoon generally listed the then current configuration) but Wikipedia says Phalanx in 83 and ASROC replaced by a VLS in "the late 80s". So in the mid 80s it didn't have more than of 8 (eight!) SAM missiles.
@@yourjusticeonline No that was a bit before my time. I started at Sub Command.
P-500 was actually designed to deal with carrier task force, the one that rise above act as spotter and use it active radar to guide the low flying one. The programming of the missile is to divide the salvo so that half will prioritize the Aircraft carrier while the other half target other ship. If the spotter is destroy, another will rise to high altitude to replace it.
That is some really nifty programming!
I wanna buy some!

@@Stealth17Gaming especally when you realize how lmited computing power that you could put inside a missle was when this things were 1st fielded.
LMAO @ All the American comments? None at all understand the reality in today's world, because you all assume so much yet remain misinformed of today's real situation. In today's world of hi-tech Anti-Ship ballistic missiles, like the Chinese DF-21D - operational range (1700 km's) that can sink any carrier in the world with a single hit. All Navies without the ability to stop these missiles are completely obsolete today. Why don't any of you understand this huge, enormous, obvious fact?
Russia's Zircon Anti-Ship missile, though inferior in way of operational range-400kms, it can be fired from Aircraft, Subs, and Ships making it deadly to any carrier in the world. (Russia also has the Brahmos and the P-800 Oniks Anti-Ship missiles). We all know the USA hasn't got a destroyer of any means that can defend against these missiles today. Making all the USA's Navy only obsolete in today's world. And please, if you don't think so? Then let's just look at the distances the US jets can travel? It's about 500-650 (max) km's out - and the same back again = 1300 km's range. So how can the US ever deploy any carrier close enough to reach any inland target, and then get back again? They can't, anywhere inside 1700 km's, they're sunk, they're toast, they're history.
So today, the real and ever so obvious facts are very clear, the USA has no capability to attack any militarily capable country who have these modern hi-tech Anti-Ship ballistic missiles in their defensive armoury. These are the real facts today. Whether any of you think so or not?, Is irrelevant, because If the risk outweighs any potential reward, gain, or result? = obsolete. The USA has nothing that can stop those missiles today, and China's DF-21D is a carrier killer. A manoeuvrable Ballistic missile not following a ballistic path, hurtling at your carrier?. You're doomed!
You know how Dangerous Waters has an entire campaign based on Red Storm Rising? I can’t wait for someone to do the same for Sea Power.
Been following this game since was first announced. That trailer had me hook, line, and sinker. Easily the game I am looking forward to the most.
Same here. Cold war Naval assets are not a setting that gets much attention, so this is a nice Idea to give it a unique selling point
When tho? I can’t wait!
As a former 'Point Defence Co -Ordinator' (PDC) anti ship missile defence used to be my job during my service in the R.N. 30 - odd years ago. It's amazing to actually see the hardware in action. The procedures and doctrine that I learned off by heart from then 'Secret' documents look to be accurately depicted. I'm looking forwards very much to getting this Sim since it was announced about 3 years ago. great vid and thanks for posting.
I think this game is inspired by sonalysts fleet command, sonalysts are a defense contractor so there is the bones of something solid there
Nebulous Fleet Command is like submarine warfare in space in terms of how gameplay is, but with very realistic radar. Worth checking out.
This and Task Force: Admiral have had me hyped ever since MicroProse came back and teased us with them a few years back.. I really can't wait! TF:A also puts up a decent amount of dev videos showing off their recent work and testing - pretty cool to check out if you haven't yet or lately!
I still have to make a video out of that. Haven't made time for it yet.
Thank you for your kind support (the both of you ;) )
microprose is a joke today.
Regiments? vastly inferior to the Wargame series, or even early access Warno. Regiments feels like a tech demo.
Carrier command? half baked game with bugs, and lack of depth.
Tiny combat arena? Literally just a tech demo.
Mech engineer? Literally just a tech demo.
Like they have ***four*** different B17 games upcoming. Because instead of making a single good game, they'd rather push out 4 tech demos and get your money 4 times in a row.
They'd rather churn out 6 bad, or barely mediocre games per year than to actually put development time into a single project.
And why would they? You idiots are so busy fanboying over microprose you'll buy whatever they publish regardless of the product quality.
@@monarchco I am not sure you are quite familiar with the mystical arcanes of the development process for all these games and who does what... But I am not sure either that using this sort of approach and colorful wording is the best way to change anybody's mind when it comes to winning back your kind audience 😅
I wish you luck in finding the game fitting your expectations, it will hopefully come at some point.
Cheers!
Microprose has managed to nail some really good games lately. They don't seem the largest games, but theres some absolutely incredible small dev games for this subset of the community (ie me).
For years I've been wanting a modern take on "Janes Fleet Command" could this be it?
The devs have said that is their goal.
@@NixodCreations recently got fleet command and based off what I was hearing I was wondering if this was gonna be that, so heck yeah
if you don't care for fancy graphics, Command Modern Operations is the best naval sim/wargame on the market
Proper old-schoolers recall "Harpoon" and its sequels . The designer of Harpoon was the co-author of the novel Red Storm Rising, with Tom Clancy.
@@ashaffold if hardly call it a “game”. More like an encyclopedia of weapons, kit and sensors, spanning decades, with a nice lil “game” slipped in there.
Love Command, and you know I had to get TacView for it. Such a bad ass game, sim, whatever you wanna call it.
I cannot wait for this game to come out. I also hope the devs of Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts comes out with a modern version of their game. Where you build modern ships using missile systems, etc. Would be amazing.
I can’t wait for this. I grew up on Janes Fleet Command. Sometimes I just watch the intro for that on RUclips for old times sake 👍🏼😂
This game was an instant wishlist for me when I first saw it. Can't wait!
@13:57 That's actually neither a frigate or a cruiser, that's an old Spruance-class destroyer, a pretty fantastic old class or warships that preceded the Arleigh Burkes. They share a hull design with the Ticonderoga-class cruisers that everyone is probably a lot more familiar with nowadays, but without the AEGIS system that the Tico's introduced to the fleet and were famous for. The Spruance in the video is engaging the incoming SSMs with her Sea Sparrow launcher astern, which is a navalized version of the AIM-7 Sparrow used on aircraft like the Phantom II and Eagle of the era.
Spurance is not a bad destroyer of its time, it’s a pity that they didn’t make VLS sistem with Tomahawks on a par with Harpoons, the only normal ship in that era was the cruiser Ticonderoga, especially when it was equipped with VLS sistem with tomahawks, this was a real floating threat, of course a competitor to it there was our missile cruiser of the Slava type, with its 16 P-500 Bazalt, at that time it was not inferior to the same Ticonderoga.
I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I'd love to see some carrier action.
I remember playing a game called "Harpoon" that used to do whole fleet combat with some simple graphics. That was back in the days of floppy disks.
What you saw the Harpoon (Block 1A) did at 21:00 is called Terminal Popup, The popup starts outside CIWS range but usually within most SAM's minimum engagement range. What is does is to present the Harpoon as an aspect changing target rather than stationary (aspect wise) target straight towards the ship making it hard to track by the CIWS. Block 1B changes to a lower sea skimming profile with new software while Block 1C will do both. Block 1A/B/C variant are all in service during the Cold War.
And what does it give? What is the advantage over our Russian ships? As I understand it, if American ships were armed with Tomahawks with a VLS system like the same Ticonderoga in later releases, and here a Harpoon that does almost no damage, even on the video it was clear that one hit of such a missile into the ship does not guarantee its destruction, too small a charge, such as from a missile P-500 or even P-700, where one such missile can send Ticonderoga to the bottom.
@@user-jb6fl1gp2r During the cold war. P500/700 are high flying missiles that can be detected over 200+ miles away by the AEW aircraft and have to go through the multi-layer defense of a typical CVBG (AAM, SAM, CIWS & decoys) while you'll be lucky to detect a Harpoon at 20 miles and your only real defense is you CIWS. The USSR are scared of the Harpoon, why do you think they put so many CIWS on the ships build during that period like the Kirov, Udaloy, Sovremenny. Also, instead of looking at game videos. Look up some actual Harpoon striking ship videos and you'll see that you don't really need anything bigger to mission kill anything other than a Kirov and a Kirov without escort is just a sitting duck.
@@user-jb6fl1gp2r its much harder to detect and it has the ability to do some Counter air defense manuver and since its small it could be carried by alot of platform and more of them.
And as we have seen recently it doesnt need much payload to sink a warship....
@@gotanon9659 I hasten to assure you that although Harpoon has anti-aircraft defense maneuvers, this does not give him any advantage, he is shot down by the same Osa-M, S-300FM missile, as well as anti-aircraft artillery of the AK-630 type. Radars see it perfectly, both meter and centimeter range, the signature of the rocket is clearly visible. As you can see in the video, after one Harpoon missile, ships do not go to the bottom, and after one P-35, P-100, P-300, P-500 Basalt, P-700 Granite missiles, American troughs go to the bottom, since these missiles have big charge. A harpoon will not be able to send even a destroyer to the bottom with one hit, well, if only a maximum corvette.
You talked about admiring the engineering enabling one missile to hit another, so they don't. The clue is in the name MISSile, they basically detonate a warhead with a shrapnel effect of sorts (depending on missile type) , just ahead of the target that it then flies through, either detonating the target warhead (rarely) or so interrupting the flight model, the target splashes. Furthermore your surprise at the Russian Anti Ship missiles "flying in formation" was not only possible, but doctrine, the aim being to co-ordinate the time on target with a salvo of missiles approaching the target from multiple discreet directions. This aimed to swamp the defensive capabilities and reduce the jamming and chaff effectiveness of the target ship. Chaff in partiicular relies heavily on being deployed "just so" in order to seduce the seeker head of the attacking missile from the target ship to the chaff. If the geometry is wrong, it won't work so if you have 4 missiles approaching from different angles more or less simultaneously, chaff can only work against one of them. There is a lot more to it than my simple explanation here, if these devs have even half captured some of the complexities and finesse of these cold war scenarios, two things will happen. Your mind will be well and truly blown and it will be a brilliant game. I know all of this because I served in the RN as a warfare officer as the Cold War was ending, this was my day job.......
Dude I’m so unbelievably excited for this game! Watched this whole video with a big smile on my face!
To answer your question about the missiles at roughly the 22 to 23 minute mark, the missiles were designed to work in a swarm. At 24:20 you can see all but one missile dive for the deck. The missile that stayed up is using its radar to act as a spotter for all the others.
I am so damn excited for this game. Have been waiting for it since videos first started popping up a year or so ago.
Microprose bringing us so many good games again, love to see it. Slitherines Rule the Waves 3 while not graphical looked really good for a deeper simulation too.
I hope that they're just checking the missile flight physic as unless they fix this, I'm putting this game on the wait and see list. During the Cold War era. There are only 2 Soviet naval SAM (SA-N-4 and SA-N-7) that's capable of engaging the Harpoon since it's a sea skimming missile and their flight profile is below most Soviet naval SAM and the SA-N-1 and SA-N-3 certainly cannot.
This is a rather old WIP gameplay video, from before EW was fully implemented. SA-N-4 has rather marginal performance against sea skimmers IRL, while SA-N-9 is much better but only carried on Udaloy. The Soviets were betting heavily on jamming, decoys and CIWS to deal with the Harpoon threat.
@@julhelm1821 Cool, I figure it's just for testing as you guys shouldn't be making that kind of mistake with Cold Waters under your belt.
@@julhelm1821 IIRC initially Udaloy's didn't have any SAMs as the SA-N-9 wasn't ready for service until the late 80s. Considring the game's timeframe is limited to only mid 80s, the SAM version may not be in.
Holy this looks good, cant wait for it!
Oh and as for a request - I 'd love to see more on carrier-based aircraft and what sort of missions / roles they can and will perform. In one of the earliest screenshots it looks like one's about to drop some ordinance on a land base
To me its Harpoon 2023. I played the original Harpoon on my laptop in 1991 and it looks to be just a fleshed out version of it. Im excited about this game.
Soviets considered their navy to be an expendable tool. They didnt expect ships to survive an engagement so thats why no reloads. All the Soviets cared about was stopping convoys and aircraft carriers. The land war was their main game. If their entire navy was sunk, but the continent of Europe was overrun, that was a Soviet victory. NATO/US had to have reloads because we valued lives of soldiers and preserving ships for future convoy or attack missions.
Its like the old joke of two Soviet generals meeting up in Paris after the war was won...and one asking:
"So Comrade...who won the air war?"
We had a fleet in the Cold War no worse than the American one, the missile offensive potential was high, we succeeded in missile armament, now our fleet plays no less important role than the war on earth, especially the submarine fleet with which few can compare, so many submarines, also the most powerful in the world, nor Ohio and Seawolf are not standing next to the same Shark or Antaeus.
This looks like the spiritual successor to Strike Fleet that I've been waiting for.
Looks amazing!
It’s been in my wish list on steam since it went up. Their discord is full of shots of what they are working on.
Finally a true successor to Jane's Fleet Command. My favorite game growing up!
Much thanks for posting this, on my wish list for 3 years as of May!!
The "blue bubble" aka sphere in the stern position is the "blast sphere" of the impacting missile defining the area of damage.
Been following this game for a while, I can't wait for it to finally be here.
Actually these make me remember Jane's Fleet Command, one of the game Dangerous Waters based on. I play a lot in early 2000s, really excited to see a similar game coming out in 2023
Great game!!! It's actually on the Epic Store, so I grabbed it for old time's sake, but it doesn't wanna run in Win 11 no matter what I do :( Ended up grabbing Carrier Command 2 - pretty damned good as well!!
This looks pretty good. Seeing logistics is cool
I'm really looking forward to this. So far, its checking all the boxes for me ; )
Nice video overview. That 963 pictured being hit, is a Spruance Class Destroyer, and pictured is DD-963 USS Spruance first of the class. Primarily ASW ships. I was stationed aboard the USS Elliot DD-967. Really looking forward to this game. Thanks
Sea Power, Task Force Admiral, Modern Naval Warfare
This is going to be a good year
Thanks for following us, we'll do our best ;)
That cruise missile salvo the Slava can spit out is truly scary. Can't wait for this!
man. i am definatly going to buy the game. its such a great concept
Been waiting for this game since it popped up on Jive Turkey's radar (now OnlySubs). He is a former sonarman and watching him play through the dev's older game Cold Waters is pretty fun, especially when he elaborates on how things work and shares some stories from his time in.
Would love to see you play through this Stealth.
I can't wait looks amazing😃
Have been waiting for this game, reminds me of Harpoon and Janes Fleet Command from back in the day, a genre/game that's been absent for too long.
I am a bit long in the tooth. I am looking over my shoulder staring at my Jane's Fighting Ships 1991-1992 and how I have pored over that book throughout the years. I have been playing naval war games before there were computers. I used to play Harpoon by David Bond, more a simulation than a game. I cannot wait to play this game. And yes. I identified all the ships. The Krivak class, one of the Soviet frigates in the first engagement is armed with SS-N-14( NATO Designation) SSM/ASW. It functions the same as an ASROC.
This looks amazing
a fleet formation setting would be ideal for a game like this, im imagining something along the lines of the battlestation's games, that would be great instaind of manualy changing ship's speed
12:20 the Kynda class cruiser had 8 missiles ( 2x4 ) but had an additional 8 in storage on the ship
I read it was extremely difficult to reload the heavy missiles at sea and was scrapped in future Soviet designs
Man that S-500 Bazalt is so cool and that salvo was just great
Really nice
I'm so excited for this game. Been following so a couple years.
Glad you mentioned the engineering part of the missiles. Most players are quick to criticize and don't take their time to step back and look at the modeling on these new games (or older, like Dangerous Waters). As an electric engineer myself, military equipment engineering is admirable, and Cold War stuff even more because everything had a great deal of electromechanical systems on it.
Cold Waters does have surface warfare as well, though. They had surface ships in there so that it wasn't just a submarine sim. Although, the original game does not allow to play them, courtesy of modders who have made that available and improved upon it, it is possible. Thanks to Epic mod or Dot Mod you are able to play some surface ships, but the game of course is just not meant to be a surface ship game, so there are huge limitations, and the one obvious being that you can only play as one ship at a time. Meaning, you can play "The Last Ship" but that's it
I’m so hyped that i check everyday for reales date
I'm very excited, but honestly, I just want to control a SINGLE ship, instead of a fleet. That's something I like about Cold Waters. You're just a single sub in the entire war. I think something like this could be awesome, but focusing on operating a single vehicle.
Like, honestly, the cold waters style dynamic campaign, but you're a single bomber crew, a single destroyed, a carrier (Or a plane from a carrier)
Looks like a good game. It is what I used to do for a living. I would have to resist the urge to edit the parameters for various systems to make them 'real'. The first computer 'game' I ever got to play was the Harpoon Interactive Tactical Training System (HITTS). I was hooked. IIRC - that would have been 1981.
This really reminds me of Naval War: Arctic Circle. just much improved. i think this looks really cool Naval War was cool even if it was so bugged only the first mission was playable,
May be a little before your time, but the first Cold War naval strategy game I played was Harpoon, though that was just the player looking at maps rather than rendering ship/aircraft/missile models. Learned a lot about the official capabilities of the various combatants up until the mid-to-late 80s. But yeah, standard practice for Soviet antiship missiles during that era was that they would travel to the target at high altitude and dive, while NATO missiles mostly skimmed the surface and popped up just before striking their targets. Either way, the intent is to strike the lighter armor of the superstructure or deck rather than the reinforced side belt armor.
The harpoon is weak, it can be seen even in the game, hitting the ship did not lead to serious damage, it would be fine if there was a Tomahawk, this is another level.
Anyone remember Jane's Fleet Command? So many hours of entertainment back then.
Still available on Steam.
This looks like it has more in common with Jane's Fleet Command, than Cold Waters, or Dangerous Waters. I saw a Kresta 2 Soviet Cruiser. (Ive seen a couple of those up close and personell.) A Krivak 1 class frigate. I think the first gun armed ship in the vid may have been an American Fletcher or Sumner Class Destroyer as it might have appeared in the 50's and early 60's. There were Fletcher's still serving up into the mid 90's.
Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations has these type of features but doesn’t have 3D graphics. weapon, visual and radar mechanics are really well modelled. You can make ASW missions to your air units, have radar planes etc.
This looks so much like fleet command. I was waiting for this
In general soviet missiles were much heavier and faster than NATO ones. NATOs tactic was to make their missiles cheap, modular and use sea skimming as their deffense. USSR tactic was to make their missiles too fast to be intercepted and basicaly kill a ship in 1 hit.
Yes, we had a good time with missiles, this heavy, fast, carrying a charge of more than 300 kilograms, the R-500 "Basalt" rocket was worth something, not to mention the R-700 "Granite", the most difficult thing we did was to create a submarine with these missiles, which are imperceptibly they approach the target, shoot and leave.
Game looks fantastic with the displayed graphics, Microprose ive not heard of in years, they were one of the biggest manufacturers of modern warfare sims
Game looking amazing, cant wait.
I hope they don't flop 🙏🏾I been waiting for this
THat game does seem like its gonna be really cool...... but its gonna take forever untill anyone gets to actually play it.
I kinda want Ultimate Admiral Dreadnough, but for this, missile age naval warfare.
Can’t wait for that game to release
At 13:58 the ship type is a Spruance Class Destroyer. Built at Ingalls shipbuilding Pascagoula Mississippi. I was on one for 4 years.1980 to 1984. USS John Hancock DD-981. The second ship is an Adams Class Destroyer. I was on one of those as well. USS Semmes DDG-18
This one is in my Steam wishlist for quite some time now.
Looks promising 👌
Now I'm looking forward to both Sea Power, and Broken Arrow. Both looks amazing
The reason the SS-N-3 flies high is mostly just due to age. It was very, very advanced for 1965, and was designed to target carriers, but 1965 tech doesn’t get you sea skimming missiles, especially not over the horizon
12:29
Those cruisers, the Groznyy class (can't remember the NATO name), had a set of reloads for their missile tubes iirc
Kynda class
Yeah, waiting for this one, looks for me very simillar to CMO, but with proper 3D, mods will do the work.
Fleet command on steroids!!!!
I like it and i cant wait for it...
Waiting for a long long time for a game like fleet command!!!
im so excited for this game!!!!!
It's a spiritual successor the Jane's Fleet Command from the late 90s and I WANT.
I still play Dangerous Waters man, its the best simulation on how SONARs work on a sub. I dont think Modern Naval Warfare will be released in this year or the next so thats all we've got atm. ( and CMANO ) But man do I look forward to this...sadly we dont get that much modern naval games/sims nowadays. This game looks really promising, cant wait to get my hands on it.
Looks fantastic, can’t wait…but I have no problem waiting so it’s as they want it upon release. Suppose DOT mod and epic mod in Cold waters will have to suffice until then-and they do a pretty good job.
one of the games I´m really looking forward to
Hope they do more work on the damage models.
Oh man, I have been eagerly awaiting this game but never saw any of the gameplay. it looks phenomenal. Cold Waters DotMOD almost reaches this.. but man
I’ve been following this game for over a year. I can’t wait for it to come out. I’m tired of WWII navy games
Can't wait for those The red storm rising scenarios
This looks like cold waters, and I do love cold waters.
Damn, I wish this naval warfare complexity level could be integrated into DCS. It would be the greatest warfare simulator ever made.
Hi stealth, for something to ask the devs to show i would like to see sonar systems in action, passive and active and how hunting for submarines would look like in the game. Also if they could show the Iowa class battleships and Kirov class battlecruisers it would be great
YESSS
Would love to see the carrier operations mechanics of the game.
Nato missile goes "pew-pew" but soviet goes "puny little boat" :) Looking forward to this game too.
In terms of games like it the obvious comparison is Fleet Command. Admittedly that game has a more modern setting, since it used (at the time) contemporary naval warships and scenarios, but apart from that the influence is very obvious
Great update, I've been following for some time. Wondering if you will be able to play subs as well?
19:30 except that VLS for USN cannot shoot Harpoons; they don’t fit (hence the Mk-141s on US DDG, DD, & CG). Mk-13 GMLS could handle SM-1 and Harpoon and engage closer targets than VLS as it can shoot horizontally and VLS has a further min range for tip over.
I am so looking forward to the release of this game.
Fleet command. Take a look at it. Its very old, but its one that can be added of games that are like this list. Very good
I'll really hope mods will add more nations like we had for cold waters. Cold war royal navy would be pretty intresting
I think the devs will add this later themselves. They have mentioned this in the past. I would personally would love a Falklands war campaign. Although interestingly enough RN warships are already in the game in the form of ex ships from the Pakistani and Indian navies.
WEll, what serious Blue Water Navies existed outside of NATO and Warsaw Pact back in the 80s? The US, UK, and France had the only true Blue Water Navies outside of the Soviet Union at the time. They were all NATO nations. NATO reprsented all the major NAVAL forces outside of the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact, at the time. Outside of NATO and Soviet Union there was India. But even then, they were mainly a Regional Naval Power. The PLAN of China was not a real threat to NATO back in the 80's. They did not start to become a true Blue Water Navy till the late 90's. So, this game aleady represents the major Navies of the Cold War, just with NATO and Warsaw Pact Navies.
This game realy reminds me of the game "janes fleet command" from 1999 - same mechanics und gamestyle - will there be air-to-air-combat?
This is gonna be the game that truly represents “The Dance of The Vampires” from red storm rising
Looks excellent, like Mods for Cold waters.
I'm dying to play! Please release this year! 🙏
this is apparently an updated version of Janes Fleet command, and that was multiplayer, which if this becomes multiplayer, I would absolutely be intrested.
I hope they'll be adding Arleigh Burke and Ticonderoga classes. that'd be cool to see how accurate they are.
