Like everything, it is a balancing act. Some of the worst people I know take great pride in "telling it like it is". If the truth is hurtful and won't help the person then there's no reason to proactively go and hurt them. If they ask, don't lie, but don't go out of your way to let them know what you think just 'cause.

  • @JeffreyMeades-jg6mc
    @JeffreyMeades-jg6mc Месяц назад +2

Conan thank you for putting such a fine point on it. My grandmother was Scottish and we were also raised to be non-confrontational. Simple truths weren't allowed to be spoken aloud if they could hurt someone's feeling or be embarassing. So you learn to communicate your emotions in different ways, body language, facial expressions, hinting at ideas without expressly stating them. The end result is whenever someone gets on your nerves or isn't understanding this secondary language of ours, we get increasingly annoyed until it comes to a head.
It's the most dysfunctional form of communication a family can subscribe to, I hate it and I've had to work very hard into adulthood to overcome those learned impulses from childhood to be able to communicate effectively with people who didn't have a similar upbringing.
Sure, I can tell you my first cousin is feeling frustrated just from looking at her across the room, but that's about as beneficial as it gets.
The rest of the time we're expecting people to basically perform magic by understanding a language they were never taught, and then getting mad at them when they don't understand.
    I'm sorry, other people.

I have "severe combined type ADHD", and as with most things, am sporadic at journaling, but in the times I can keep up with it, looking back at my journal is always an enlightening moment at how much of an idiot I really am. I use Obsidian to keep notes and just loosely write things down as I sit on my computer when they come to my mind. I use horizontal line breaks, backlinks, and # tags to add order to my chaotic ADHD brain.

“What’s a Conan that’s suffering on burnout look like?”
Obviously she doesn’t know much about Conan O’Brien. They made a whole documentary about that exact scenario.

Do you know anyone who is low key filthy rich?
There’s a guy in my neighborhood who is like this.
He is about 50 years old, in relatively good shape, decent looking, unmarried.
I spent about 15 minutes talking with him at a party.
But noticeably he never mentioned having a job. I couldn’t care either way; it was just unusual because typically a person’s occupation is mentioned during pleasantries and small talk of such parties.
I later bumped into a neighbor while on a walk, I mentioned meeting the man and how he was a cool guy. While talking to this neighbor he said, “Oh he’s a great guy!” and said, “He’ll never have to work a day in his life.”
And went on to tell me how he had started a company, ran it for 15 years, built it up nice and fat then sold it at age 45 for a crap ton of money.
It was a bit mind-blowing to be done at 45. And you’d never know. He has a 3-4 bedroom house with a green lawn and a couple of dogs but nothing fancy outside of that.
I recalled during our conversation, when I’d asked what he does he said, he mainly just reads, eats good food, exercises and plays with his dogs. And I’m assuming he doesn’t worry much about money.
He’s a bit of a role model in terms of how I think I’d live with wealth.
Some people use their money to project status and revel in the glory of their wealth. Others only use their money to buy back time and comfort which sounds a lot more gratifying to me.
I have no need to own a diamond sports car that can drive 20,000 MPH that mainly sits in a driveway to be seen.
