I have 2 solutions for you for the electricity. Borrow or rent a generator if the trades needs power. Or ask a neighbor to run an extension cord in exchange of a coffee or money😅
I already said this the other day but I am going to repeat myself as you probably do not see most comments. I have a bit more than 4500 books at home and 30+ IKEA Billy bookshelves in my basement. I wrapped them around the walls. They covered some outlets that I needed to run power cords beyond the bookcases. So, I bought the "Ikea Gnedby CD DVD BluRay Video Storage Shelf Unit Media Organizers". They have the same height as the Billys but they are only half the depth. They go for around $50, here in the U.S. You could use them to display small Lego sets. You can place them strategically wherever something protrudes from the wall. I placed mine where I had power outlets and plugged extension cords to get AC current in some of my shelves for lights, small electronics, etc. To line up the Billy bookshelves, I did what you suggested. I drilled two holes, one at the top and one at the bottom and put two screws to attach all the bookshelves together. It works great. I cut the last one to the exact size in each corner to match the size of all shelves to the actual size of the rooms.
Home Depot will rent you a generator for the day. I would go there and check out what they have available. Utility companies suck, they add so much unnecessary stress to any renovation project. I can't stand dealing with them. Hope it all works out!
Yep, +1 for renting a generator. I work for an electric utility and I reccomend home owners have a backup generator available. Probably not a major concern in a warehouse but good to keep your fridge/freezer going, run a electric space heater, and charge phones in an emergency. Sounds to me like the utility did nothing wrong. imho the retailer is at fault for scheduling power to start March 14th instead of March 1st.
Renovations are stressful. You are doing great. My first thought when you mentioned everything being on time in yesterdays video was, Oh dude, renovations never finish on time. It's just part of the process. I also agree that carpet tiles need to start in the center. This is because walls are rarely perfect squares.

Another Brit, they definitely need a coating of some sort. They’ll be moldy in no time otherwise, especially as that big roll over door will DEFINITELY be letting moisture in
When you start in a corner. By the time you get to the caddy corner, any out of square wall or carpet tile becomes exaggerated. All the tile lines will be angled. It will look terrible. Start in the center of the room and square you 1st tile. That will insure straight lines
Bricksie. Thank you for sharing your struggles. Sometimes we think we got all the right parts moving only for our plans to come to a screeching halt because of something out of our control. While the situation that presented itself really does suck, it gives me comfort to know that everyone, deals with lifes unexpected inconveniences. So thank you for being vulnerable. Keep up the hard work on your studio! Cant wait to see how you bring it all together :)
For the kick out on the mezzanine, if the furnace ducts need to stay relatively the same, you could think about framing it up on a 2x8 riser to give you a flat floor over the hvac and then build uour kitchenette on top of that. Would be another step up, but it would result in more floor space and visually separate the kitchenette and studio workspaces as well.
I work for a power company. Sounds like you guys have a different setup than what we have in the US. Either way that completely sucks. They should have notified you before turning off your power and most certainly should have expedited turning it back on since you had an active paid account. I'd be pissed too. Like others have said, most trades (contractors) have generators they can bring if they need the power or as suggested you could just rent one for a bit. Either way you should be able to get the job done. Can't wait to see how it turns out, hope it all goes smooth the rest of the way!
From what I understand it, Canada has a very different setup than the US. In the US we have regulated monopolies for power and you have accounts directly with the power company (or through a municipal provider who for all purposes act as if they are the power company). In Canada, they can actually pick their retailer from multiple options who then works with the power company. The power company had no active retailer for his address, and understandably turned off the power, and they would not have known to contact him. It was not the power company's fault, but his retailer who dropped the ball in setting up the account with the power company. The taking 48 hours to turn it back on... that is the power company's fault and unreasonable as, assuming they have a smart grid, turning it back on is trivial and the delay is merely bureaucratic
You could get a big one and hung it on the back side of the cabinet wall so you can see it from the back of the bay and then get a smaller one for upstairs
Keep positive, mishaps are bound to happen. However make sure they don't charge you for power you haven't used. You're not alone with this we're all with you. Things will fall into place and soon you'll have an awesome Lego room for all of us to see. Keep going. I love watching how it's progressing. Stay positive x
Electronics prices always fall over time, the latest tech is super pricey, but over time it gets cheap. I understand your frustration on the power situation, it's just a small bump in the road to something great. The emergency lights may be off if their battery drained.
Sounds like a government regulated company to me. Give you power before you request it, because they didn't turn off the old account and then turn it off two days before they have you scheduled to turn on. Smart. My sister in law actually works for an electric co-op and she can literally turn your power on or off in seconds. Where they get this 48 hrs garbage is far from me.
Actually, while you are working, you are not watching the thing. He could probably be perfectly happy with a 2 inch screen. What he's going to need is to have some sound to fill all that empty (and very lonesome) space.
@@winterrain1947 I was talking about in the long run. The money problem will be small now but have a big pay off down the road. I do like your idea of a sound bar. He should definitely consider it.
Most of your tradesmen should have generators, or you can go rent one at a home-center. Also, you should have a main breaker at the top of your box that turns the entire building off.
I have a few of the Billy bookcases, made them look more "built in" by adding a piece of vertical 1x2 trim connecting the shelves, baseboard at the bottom and crown molding on top. Simple and inexpensive and looks much nicer.
Hi Bricksie, I just wanted to reach out and say I understand where you're at right now, I've been there as I'm sure many others have where it seems like everything is collapsing and you just don't know what to do. This is a stressful time right now no doubt and right now it seems like it's so hard (and unnecessarily so!) and I feel so sorry this happened to you. But I want to say speaking from experience, that you will get through it. At some point in the future you will look back and see it was a bump in the road but you made it. Whatever happens you deserve to feel proud of what you've done, you and your family are proud of you, and we are all right behind you supporting you. Take care
Hi Jordan, have you thought about installing a 3/4 " white board, as you have under your sterlite drawers, to give the high cabinets on the wall a lift and enabling the cutout in the back to go on top of the base tiles? it also brings them into water with the walls... Maybe also a suggestion to keep your milky window covers in place... install a 1/2 by 1 profile wood into the window opening. (You still can silicon if you wish) it might hold the milky boards in place ... Your facility is taking shape... I am very excited to see the first builds of your new city...
Thats so frustrating, you did nothing wrong even went above and beyond in terms of notice and you still get screwed over. Its like dealing with internet service providers, 50 layers of people barely comunicating.
There will always be bumps in the road along the way, but first the internet and now the power - and all because of errors on the providers end. It’s always frustrating because they never have a good solution. But, hopefully this is the last of the big bumps in the road and you’ll be back on track soon.
Don't let it get you down, dude. These things happen to the best of us. Running your own business isn't easy. This time next year it will be a funny tale to tell. Dont sweat the small stuff!
Klearvue cabinet connectors work awesome for holding cabinets together. Might be useful for connecting your billy shelves. All you need is a 3/16th-5mm bit and Phillips screwdriver.
I actually have a Hisense tv, just so you know, its amazing! Its 75 inches and the color is phenomenal. Just wanted to let you know since you weren't 100% sure on it.
You can usually get something going if you get a supervisor on the line and tell them the story. Keep doing that till you move up the food chain. Usually the people at the bottom have no power or care.
Attach your Billy bookcases with Chicago screws style 35. They are very secure and will keep your shelves lined up together, closing gaps. I found a RUclips video where someone used them on Billy bookcases. I ordered mine from Amazon. They worked so well.😊
Suggestion! Save a little space for the kids to play, maybe a slide from the mezzanine into a small play area so they can stay busy while you do your thing. You can usually find slides from old playgrounds on marketplace. Add a small couch, a little library and toys on a soft play mat.
I'd either start at the middle, or from the cabinenets when laying tile, cause that's going to be most visible. And it should be pretty straight if your cabinetmaker is any good...

I wanted to mention the air purifier that I bought. It's awesome! I'm so glad you talked about air purifiers in an earlier blog. It's really helping my 12 year old. for the display bookcases, just rest them against the tile and you can screw a piece of wood at the top of the bookcase to fill the space, probably 1/4 or 1/2 in will probably do the trick. making that many cuts to all ur bookcases will be a headache.
a generator is a good investment and would be a simple solution for this short term problem. bumps in the road are frustrating but normal. you got this.
as i have hard times right now, your videos comfort me actually .. so thnx from my heart for making me being able to be part of your whole process right now :) keep it up and good luck!
Maybe the internet guy did something with the wiring that caused the power to shut off. That's weird how it went off, as soon as he left. Hopefully, you get it all resolved and all the projects continue on schedule.
An idea for the billy bookcases is creating a timber batten frame off the concrete block wall and fixing the billy bookcases to the batten frame. This is will also bring them off the wall and away from the outlets etc as well as fixing them to the wall to prevent any incidents with the shelving units falling. Only downside is that there would be a gap at the top which might need a fill in piece? Anyway just a idea!

Hello to Benjamin and Millie! You are doing an awesome job juggling so much of this on your own as the Project Manager. Stay positive and keep your positive attitude it’s all coming together so amazing. We are rooting for you Bricksie we think you are so awesome!! 🎊
Oh no! That's unbelievable. Jordan you have been waiting so long for the gas fitter in that cold studio, I hope they can at least do some of the work. If only you knew someone with a generator that might help with power tools. Good luck buddy, and the new shelves look awesome!!
I can't believe how exciting it is to follow this vlog! So interesting even learning about your small mistakes and stuff. Incredible job please keep going.
I had the same thing happen, they admitted to screwing up but instead of expediting it for whatever reason, they gave me a generator to use for the day so the contractor could work
They are more expensive, but I think the LG C seriies OLEDs at Costco are definitely worth it with unbeatable viewing angles that don't fade at all when viewed left right or up and down. I think that is important if you are viewing content in a large space as you are working and walking around.
Well, eventually your hours will be midday to late night again, also probably best to do reviews and whatnot at home and builds at the warehouse, now you have the space, a club with others could expand your content.
Briskie I seeyou have two choices for the lego shelf's. sand down the tile corners. Or you can place thin sheets of plywood underneath the shelf's to rise it up just enough.
Once you get this power mess sorted, check your bill at months end and make sure they credit you for those days they cut it off. That's the very least they can do, especially being their mistake.
Sounds like hydro there in Alberta is just as messed up as it is here in Manitiboa. The blind leading the blind . And the customers get penalized for their lack of communication.
Although a robot vacuum will be great for the floor, the real enemy is going to be the air. Dusting Lego is not terribly difficult, but hope you are considering using at least a MERV 10 change every 4-5 months. Will save a lot of heachache and swiffering in the long run.
i wish i was there to give you a hug... we all been in your kind of predicament. as they say roll with the punches and get as much done with this short coming.
Like others have said, the bay doors being open will help. Also, as I saw from someone, notate these outages so you can get reimbursed for that time, cause you're paying for it. I hope for the best with the build. Everything looks great so far.
I Work in the trades and you never know what your going to get! Open up the bay doors and you should be perfect. Most trucks come with inverters to charge up power tools so I think you should be more then okay 👍🏻
Hey there! Really sorry to hear about the power situation. It might be worth reaching out to the electric company for a bill adjustment, considering the inconvenience and business impact you’ve faced. I’ve found that, much like with phone and internet services, they’re often open to compensating for the downtime. Hope it gets resolved soon!
Jordan Don't despair, these things happen. Trades get it all the time. source your local hire shop to get a small generator for charging up tools etc. Open up your shutter for light. call your power supplier and tell them the inconvenience they caused and you expect a compensation for additional cost etc. the trades will understand and will surely help you out with a solution.. Don't worry, you're doing Great 👍👍
This happened to me when I transferred my Internet service when I moved in December 2019. I had my old place until the end of December, I took possession of my new place on December 1, and I had my Internet connection date at the new place scheduled for December 13. They ran out of time in the day, I didn't get my Internet connected at my new place, but they still cut it off at my old place and made me wait a week for the rebooked visit. 🤬 If I didn't have worse past experience with the competition, I would have switched service providers.
That’s so annoying. Did you secure the window coverings? What about the pony shelves? If you uncover the windows it would let in a decent amount of light and if you can move the shelves, even more. Might be better than opening the bay door for temperature.
You could always put a flat piece of white melamine on the ground and sit the cabinets on that to raise them up slightly so they can be pushed flat up to the wall.
I wonder if some furniture felt/rubber pads could give enough of a gap to have the shelf units go flush against the wall. Doesn't look like they would need much height to clear the tiles.
How unfortunate, but in construction there is always something that happens to delay…although this may not delay you at all. Hope the lights are back on now and the tradesman can work.
I have had this sort of “luck” my whole life. Take a big breath. It is out of your hands. I know how hard it is. 😢 Things will work out. 😊 Everything is figureoutable. Best of luck! A big hug and snuggle with a little is good medicine.
Aw man, that sucks but it will work out my friend! It’s gone pretty good so far; renos are always a pain in the butt. If this is all that goes wrong in a reno of this size you’ll be very fortunate. Hang in there dude and you’re still the best! Cheers and 🤞 🍻

I prayed for you and your family brother bricksie God ain't going to put nothing on us that we can't handle always think of that everything will be all right I promise remember one step at a time the Lego community got your back we are there for you💛💛👊👊👊👊🙏🙏
Hope power returns quickly. Projects always have hiccups, role with it, the end of the staging is near.
Instead of ‘shelving rooms’, call them ‘showcase rooms’. Sounds classy.
Wishing you the best!! You are 100000% allowed to be angry and cry. Hoping you found a solution and get some credit from the company!
I assume in Canada they say "trades" as compared to "contractors" which is what we call them in America.
Same same. The contractor usually is the company or person aligning the trades workers
Same same but different but still same
Hello to Benjamin and Millie!
That stupid electricity company, surely they would issue a notice before cutting off the power? Bet they sent it to the previous owner and not you.
how it works....the previous owner has to log out of his account before you can transfer the system into your name....
Briskie I seeyou have two choices for the lego shelf's. sand down the tile corners. Or you can place thin sheets of plywood underneath the shelf's to rise it up just enough.
I like the toilet in the middle of the room. Unique feature
That sucks, hopefully it works out/worked out when the guys got there. A bit of a set back for sure.
Once you get this power mess sorted, check your bill at months end and make sure they credit you for those days they cut it off. That's the very least they can do, especially being their mistake.
that pipe in the centre could easily be moved to the wall so you have an open area!
Sounds like hydro there in Alberta is just as messed up as it is here in Manitiboa. The blind leading the blind . And the customers get penalized for their lack of communication.
Like in 2001 A space odyssey: “Open the pod bay doors…”
Although a robot vacuum will be great for the floor, the real enemy is going to be the air. Dusting Lego is not terribly difficult, but hope you are considering using at least a MERV 10 change every 4-5 months. Will save a lot of heachache and swiffering in the long run.
Sorry to hear about your troubles with the electricity. Make sure they don’t charge you for the day(s) you don’t have power.
i wish i was there to give you a hug... we all been in your kind of predicament. as they say roll with the punches and get as much done with this short coming.
Open the garage door, let in the natural light, yes it’ll get cold but the light will make it worth it
Jordan Don't despair, these things happen. Trades get it all the time. source your local hire shop to get a small generator for charging up tools etc. Open up your shutter for light. call your power supplier and tell them the inconvenience they caused and you expect a compensation for additional cost etc. the trades will understand and will surely help you out with a solution.. Don't worry, you're doing Great 👍👍
What would look really good in the cabinets would be to line the shelf with baize.
Them emergency lights only stay on for 1h or a bit longer .
I brew coffee with my eyes too when I’m desperate for that first cup!
The Henday during Rush hour is a nightmare, I deal with it every day so I feel ya
You could possibly put 1x2 boards under the "billys"... it would lift them up then you may want to put a new toe kick to cover the gap on bottom...
That’s so annoying. Did you secure the window coverings? What about the pony shelves? If you uncover the windows it would let in a decent amount of light and if you can move the shelves, even more. Might be better than opening the bay door for temperature.
You should put like a raised platform/floor over the piping to utilize the floorspace in the mesanine
You could always put a flat piece of white melamine on the ground and sit the cabinets on that to raise them up slightly so they can be pushed flat up to the wall.
Woo that s the first time, i see you Jordan without the smile !!!! I feel sad for you, hope power will be back tomorrow !
hey man if you put a raised floor above the vent pipes where your adding the wall it would add a higher lookout space over your city!
I wonder if some furniture felt/rubber pads could give enough of a gap to have the shelf units go flush against the wall. Doesn't look like they would need much height to clear the tiles.
Portable generators. get 'em now. they'll come in handy in the future.
How unfortunate, but in construction there is always something that happens to delay…although this may not delay you at all. Hope the lights are back on now and the tradesman can work.
Best to start in the center of the room to lay the carpet tile. If you try to start in the corner, you will find that the walls are likely
not square
No worries, I have a guy that will help me with that.
That's so annoying! Hope you're feeling better about it by now, sad way to end the video. All the best
I have had this sort of “luck” my whole life. Take a big breath. It is out of your hands. I know how hard it is. 😢
Things will work out. 😊 Everything is figureoutable. Best of luck! A big hug and snuggle with a little is good medicine.
once you get the construction is done, your mornings will be better.
Aw man, that sucks but it will work out my friend! It’s gone pretty good so far; renos are always a pain in the butt. If this is all that goes wrong in a reno of this size you’ll be very fortunate.
Hang in there dude and you’re still the best! Cheers and 🤞 🍻
at least you didn't lose power while the internet guy was there, that would have been even worse to have to reschedule him YET AGAIN
Most trades should manage a day without power mate as most things are battery and open main door for light. Hope it gets resolved fast.
Welcome to running your business, always expect the unexpected
