  • After months of controversy and five Grammy wins for “Not Like Us” last week, Kendrick Lamar graced the stage at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for the Apple Music Super Bowl 2025 halftime show. Kendrick’s halftime performance started with an introduction by actor Samuel L. Jackson dressed as Uncle Sam. The stage was built to look like it had PlayStation controller buttons. The tone for the show was set early. He performed 11 songs including "Not Like Us."

@cjones093009 as a Wayne fan we got to be realistic. Can you name 1 performance Wayne has ever done that shows he could hold down a whole superbiwl performance? That man always looks leaned out, slurred, and just stands on stage yelling. Carter 5 is one of my favorite albums of all time but it seems delusional to think anyone would enjoy Wayne standing on stage jumping and yelling. And what songs would even be appropriate? The average Wayne song has the N word so many times you would half to sleep half the song...

      @onesolopolo4194 10 часов назад +4

@ backing tracks are pre recorded songs that play behind an artist, both to enhance vocals and supplement the heavy breath-work involved in a live show.
Rappers use backing tracks so they can leave out words to take a breath and the word still plays over head, this also helps to keep the rapper in sync with the song.
Kendrick leaves words out to take breaths and there is no backing track behind him, the word is just left out - not just with this performance, but notoriously all his performances.
The only time he uses a backing track is on parts of the song that he cant perform - due to the limitations of only having one mouth.

Wouldn’t you agree that a backing track can be “without” vocals. Where do you think the music is coming from? Do you think there’s a band backstage playing that? This, my friend, is a rapper performing to a backing track. It may not have vocals but that’s what it is. Some words were left out because of profanity and some words are left out for crowd participation. Let’s not pretend he couldn’t perform to a backing track that is different than the album recording. Either way, the performance still sucked. lol 🤷🏻‍♂️

Sharing: Didn't like or understand the Half-time show? Maybe this will help.
    -Kendrick Lamar
A compilation of things folks have already written about the performance:
“Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime performance was a powerful and intentional showcase that blended music, political commentary, and cultural symbolism. The performance began with actor Samuel L. Jackson portraying Uncle Sam, introducing Lamar with the exclamation, “Salutations!” This choice set the stage for a performance that delved into themes of American identity and societal expectations.
Throughout the 13-minute set, Lamar performed tracks such as “GNX,” “Squabble Up,” “Humble,” “DNA,” “Euphoria,” and “Man at the Garden.” Dancers dressed in red, white, and blue accompanied him, symbolizing patriotism while also highlighting the tension between national pride and criticism. Jackson’s Uncle Sam character intermittently interrupted the performance, labeling the dancers as “too loud, too reckless, too ghetto,” and reminding Lamar to “play the game,” underscoring the societal pressures to conform.
A significant moment was the performance of “Not Like Us,” a track known for its critique of cultural appropriation and its role in Lamar’s public feud with Drake. Notably, certain words were omitted from the lyrics during the performance, possibly to navigate ongoing legal disputes. The song’s inclusion, especially after winning Song and Record of the Year at the Grammys, reinforced its cultural impact.
Guest appearances by SZA, who performed “Luther” and “All the Stars,” and producer Mustard added depth to the show. Tennis star Serena Williams was also seen participating on stage, further highlighting the performance’s cultural resonance. Both of them used to date Drake
Lamar’s attire was deliberate and symbolic. He wore a leather bomber jacket by Martine Rose, light denim jeans, a backward baseball cap, and a glimmering chain. His dancers’ red, white, and blue sweatsuits served as a subtle political statement, reflecting the performance’s exploration of American identity.
In summary, Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show was a thought-provoking performance that used music, fashion, and staging to comment on themes of identity, societal expectations, and cultural critique, solidifying his role as a storyteller on one of the nation’s biggest stages.”
Like it or not, we’re talking about it and trying to figure it out. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Love Kendrick but it was pretty lame. Not his platform. Everyone I saw it with couldn't wait until it was over. Next year they need to get someone with nore general audience appeal.

2 Hot takes, it was mostly artistic on the screen than it being live and he did this type of performance in hopes he would win an Emmy.

I would have had more than one performer, woulda put Wayne in the lineup for the his hometown, but the problem is the percentage of natives at the Super Bowl is little to none and the % of total viewers being from New Orleans is also little to none, and Wayne isn’t hot right now and has no new music that I know of, I don’t see how it was ripped away from him, I didn’t think it was his to start with or loose. He seems to have a new fire so people are probably getting some new music.
