A tutorial on train signals in Factorio.
Factorio is a game about building and creating automated factories to produce items of increasing complexity, within an infinite 2D world. Use your imagination to design your factory, combine simple elements into ingenious structures, and finally protect it from the creatures who don't really like you.

Finally a good video that shows train signals and that is not 35 min long
Thanks! I tried to cover just the basics and have as little "fluff" as possible.
Wanted to comment the exact same thing. It's a great video
Absolutely! I just wanted some pointers to get started with using trains and this is just so concise. I love it!
"The rule to remember: place chain signals going in to the junction and standard signals going out of the junction."
Perfect explanation. Thanks a bunch for a great tutorial!
Thanks, much appreciated.
@@talon_gaming 1 year later I watched it and clicked your video cause it wasn't 35 min long. This single sentence just sums up what I needed to start getting going. That relay part is kind of confusing as the chain signal itself ALSO detects trains inside of its blocks, which is what I needed to understand. Thanks.
Only daytime, clean terrain, pavements, simple, clear. That's how you make a tutorial, nice, thanks.
Thanks, I tried to get rid of as many distractions as possible.
best train signal tutorial I've seen so far
I have thrown 200 hours into Factorio but had no idea how to use train signals (yeah I know that's bad), this is the first guide I've found that explains it in a way that an idiot like me can understand, so thank you heaps.
"...chain signals will copy the state of signals further along the track." That right there was it for me. Jesus, I just spent hours trying to understand what I was doing wrong. I did not understand how chain signals worked. THANK YOU 5 YEARS LATER.
Good tutorial, clear and precise. I now have the hang of it thanks to you!
James Cannings Thanks for your comment James, I really appreciate it! I’m glad the video was useful to you.
imagine if everything was presented in this way
Well done. I think Factorio is a game for smart folk and so the people making tutorials tend to over-explain things but for newer players and people who maybe aren't as technically-minded it's better to keep things simple, which you have accomplished. I feel like I have a better understanding of signals after watching this video than a lot of other tutorials out there.
damn it helped alot....i have a simple track....other videos i watched only explained large and complicated shit...you explained both in a short and simple way...bravo mate
Thanks! Glad I could help. Yeah, this was intended to explain the mechanics of train signals in Factorio. Anything complicated is usually created specifically for that person's setup which is less likely to be of use to others.
OMG, finally ! Easy to understand, super clear, not over long .. straight to the point ! Beautiful tutorial ! Thanks a lot !
it was realy clear and easy to understand thy u
Thank you. I hope it was helpful!
Personally I still found it confusing but it did give me a better understanding of them.
I think of chain signals as a path choice. If a train has multiple paths ahead use a chain signal and terminate the block with a rail signal. But when multiple tracks merge to one track, then there is no choice so a rail signal before the intersection and after the block to terminate, and no chain signal required
THANK YOU!!!! Finally a simple clear and fast tutorial by someone who knows what he is doing.
That's a big assumption to think I know what I'm doing - but it's appreciated nonetheless 😊
The best clearest explication I’ve found yet! This will finally help me use trains at least decently well!
Worth a sub! Hope you make more well explained and thought out content like this!
Thanks, I hope it was useful. I'm trying to record more videos but if there's anything you want me to do a tutorial on, just let me know and I'll see what I can do.
This might actually be what I needed to solve my confusion! I've spent HOURS trying to figure out how trains work in this game, and to no avail. Once I'm in front of my factory again, I'll watch this quick video again and see if I can finally get my trains to work! Thanks!
Thanks, I hope you were able to get them working!
Simple and very effective. Thankyou very much. The first 2mins33 secs still make sense on 1.0.0
Hands down best train signal video
Oh, thank goodness. Just picked up this game recently and train signals were the first time where my brain just refused to pick up a concept. Cheers, especially for the short length. I can get back to setting up my own trains now. C:
I know I'm a couple of years late, but thanks for this tutorial.. This was really well done..
Man, the wiki completely confused me when reading about rail/chain signals. Your video summarized everything and made the confusion go away. Thank you for this short, yet very informative video!
My pleasure!
I know I'm late here, but thank you for this video. Very helpful summary of the signal system.
Wow, it's finally starting to click. Fantastic tutorial!
Best Factorio tutorial i've ever seen. Clear and easy to understand. This world needs more of your vidoes!!
Thanks, that's much appreciated.
Excellent. Cleared up all my confusion in the matter.
Thanks, I hope it helped.
holy shit why do youtube tutorials have to be 30 minutes long and 10 of those is sponsors and begging to like subscribe and hit the bell notification? godbless you for this quick tutorial
Thank you for the yet simple, but very helpful tip. Even though most tutorials ingame are helpful, I found the train one quite confusing.
Not your fault, but sadly with the new youtube "let's remove the single most helpful thing to tell if a video is helpful before watching it halfway" I had to go through 4 other views beforehand, which had slightly or even throughly different explanations.
Thanks Talon!
I've been looking for something like this after buying Factorio recently, explains exactly what is going on with signals. Thanks.
Good advice, so chain at entrance, normal at exit, got it!
Amazing tutorial. Only thing you need to mention is that signals on each side need to be perfectly aligned with each other or trains won't be allowed to traverse.
Very neat, clear and precise explanation. Thank you!
Thanks, I hope it was useful.
fantastic. im so used to other games where it is madness to put a signal AFTER a junction. perfect tutorial.
Hey Talon, I'm sorry I've only found your video a year and a half too late however, I just recently purchased factorio and this tutorial was awesome you sir deserve more subscribers!
If you'll forgive me for taking 7 months to reply, I'll forgive you for taking so long to find the video. Deal?
@@talon_gaming Deal! :D
Thanks for the setup and description. I really liked your introduction into the topic.
Thanks, that's much appreciated.
Finally something clear enough.
Thank you for the clear well prepared video 😊
finally a well explained vid. Thnx
Thanks mate, grea tutorial. The start was basic, then it seemed to zip ahead as soon as you scrolled down into Chain signalling. However, I'll follow the basic rule, cheers!
Thanks! Sorry if the pacing was off. If there's something you think I missed let me know.
This is way simpler than I thought it was, great tutorial my friend!
Thank you, much appreciated!
Clear and easy to understand! You earned a sub
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Very good tutorial and I've seen a lot. Thanks for a 16.x tutorial, I haven't played in awhile and the colors were confusing me after doing so long without them. Would love to see more vanilla Factorio content.
Thanks for the very clear and especially, short video. I can use trains better now.
Really helpful indeed, I just couldn't figure out the challenges from the in game tutorial but this video made it all a lot clearer!
Thanks. I've not tried the latest version of the tutorials so I don't know if they've improved them.
best basic train tutorial, just what I needed!
thanks, finally somebody *explained* the system and not just give some rules like place this befor that in this place. much better to know what you are doing
Thanks. I've seen videos like that and usually it's for a specific situation/layout. As soon as the viewer wants to do something different they're lost again because it wasn't explained fully.
Thanks. This was really clear and well done. I appreciate the work you put into it.
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words (cool name, btw)!
Great tutorial! Clear and easy to follow. Thanks for putting so much thought and effort into helping everybody.
Yup that make perfect sense to me and works with another rule I was told so yeah thanks man.
Ooh, what's the other rule?
@@talon_gaming don't use chain signals. If you have a intersection put one rail signal at the start and ends of the intersection.
so the key is to put the CHAIN signals at the "start or entrance". it kinda makes sense now
thank u so much this one made perfect sense and didn't waste a moment
Thanks, that's much appreciated!
Thanks man, I actually made a working train network that won't destroy each other's rear wagon
That video is so good that I almost got it now 🤣
Thanks man really help me out
Thank you, from 2021.
i watched a complex as fuck 2 hour vid on rails basics and learned more from this 7 mins then it lmao
I appreciate the length of the video explaining the basics but still i have some problems with the setups.
I understand that some of the cases are plausible but still:
1) 2:36 with this setup (or with any other) trains can theoretically come at the same exact time to the intersection (from right to left in this example) crashing into each other. Even if we assume that in this game it is not possible for trains to pass signals at the exact same time, say one passes 0.1 sec before the other one. Then, the train recieves the stop signal too late and cant decelerate in time causing a crash. So it seems more safe to put stop signals a bit before the intersection.
2) 6:12 can't there just be nothing in the middle?
I bloody love u mate
Aww, thanks!
very nice tutorial. Thank
Thank you!
you just earned yourself a subscriber... amazing video
Thank you so much!
very informative and concise, thank you for this video!
Thanks, I hope it was helpful.
I don't get why we need the two chain signals in the very middle in that last clip
Finally a good tutorial for this!!! thanks
Thanks, I hope it helped!
Excellent
Thank you!
Us talons need to stick together.
superb!
Thanks!
thanks man great video you helped me more than you will ever know
Thanks, glad I could help!
Thank you many.
Thanks, I hope it helped.
Idk why but I started laughing when the train crashed at 4:45
5:45 So why did the blue train have to wait for the other train at the station if he had a clear path around the station?
Thank you, I'll have to experiment a bit, but I get it now!
Hope it helped!
Very helpful video! THank you so much!
Nice!
Thanks!
you ,sir, should be a teacher .
Bravo ^^
How many blocks does a chain signal read ahead of it?
Very helpful.
Thank you!
ooookay, now no matter how many train signals I place I end up with 2 colors only. I have a train line with 2 stations and 2 train, both train has wait condition. what could be the problem?
Are there any practical rules about runabouts? Are there any differences between 2 head trains vs. single head setups except signal in both directions?
Quick and clear tyvm o7
Thanks!
Thank you!
Concise and clear.
My pleasure, hope it helped!
nice video, thanks, man!
Thanks, much appreciated!
HOLD THE RAIL SIGNAL SO WE CAN SEE THE COLORS
The colors of the blocks?
Very well done video
Thanks!
This is the first time I really understand this
Thanks, I hope it was useful.
Does anyone know why You need chain signals when you can just have a normal signal and not have a signal at the end of your junction?
Edit: Never mind it's so The junction block is contained and doesn't get any data from other signals
You're mostly there but the reason to use chain signals as well as normal ones is down to traffic management. Imagine a cross-junction running North-South and East-West with signals at the entrances. A train has just passed through from North-South. The signals will stop other trains entering the junction until and a train has just passed. If another train wants to go North-South as well that's not bad, but a train going East-West doesn't need to wait. Until the first rain passes another signal, the junction is blocked.
So let's add normal signals to the exits as well. In the same scenario, the North-South train passes through and as soon as it goes past the exit signal the junction is clear for the East-West to use. Problem solved. Unless another train wants to go North-South. The junction is clear so it can enter, but the first train is occupying the train after the exit signal so it prevents the train in the junction from leaving. Now the junction is blocked again.
Chain signals will control a block just as normal ones do but they also copy the state of the signals further along the track. If a train can't exit the block controlled by a chain signal because the next block is occupied, the chain signal will prevent the train from entering to begin with.
So let's replace the normal signals at the entrances with chain signals and use the same scenario. The first train has passed through North-South and the junction is clear to use. The other North-South train wants to enter the junction but it's exit is blocked by the first. The chain signal at the North entrance relays the state of the South exit and prevents the train from entering so the junction. The chain signal at the East entrance knows that the West exit is clear so the East-West train can still freely use the junction.
Sorry for the long wall of text. It's easier to explain visually hence the video but perhaps this is something I should have explained better. I hope this helps though.
weary helpfull but what abaut 2 lain juncions? like the T-juncion is it the same?
I still dont understand this why is the train system so needlessly complex?
I can try to help if there's something specific you're trying to create.
@@talon_gaming I figured it out. Ty
I think you need to teach me this game
Sure. There's always multiplayer as well.
i don't know if these aren't working right or if i'm just not understanding them but chain signals are just confusing the hell out of me.
I haven't been keeping up with the updates to Factorio so I don't know if their behavior has changed. They weren't the easiest thing for me to grasp initially. I had a couple of moments where I wondered if I was explaining it properly. Are you trying to create a particular junction or setup? If you link me to a diagram and explain what you're trying to do, maybe I can help.
Lol I was messing around with them trying to figure out how hey worked and it all just sort of clicked. I’m good now, thanks for the tutorial tho.
1 minute in and i solved the issues i was having... Just needed signals on both sides.
Glad I could help!
thanks!
No worries!
i think i can skip college to work in rail industry now
100. subscriber 🎂🎊🎁
Congratulations! Thanks for subscribing!
IM TOO STUPID FOR THIS GAME LOL
doesnt work
Great tutorial, would be easier to listen to if you talked a little more lively though
They'd be easier to edit too! Having to hear my own voice drone on and on repeatedly is an... interesting challenge.
I have a list of things I want to improve about my videos. Commentary/energy is the most important to me but IMO it's the hardest. I can learn editing, flashy effects and audio from tutorials, and I can upgrade my equipment, but the problems with the commentary are mostly a confidence thing and that's going to take longer.
I don't get it!!!!!!!!!
Someone give me an idiot certificate, I watched a lot of videos, had my friend explain it, tried everything in my save, tried the tutorial in the game AND STILL I don't understand anything
I still don't get them 🤷♂️😂. The developers could have made these so much less complicated..
You're not alone. Unfortunately, it depends on what you need from your train system. If all you need is a single train on a track you don't need to bother with signals. But once you have multiple trains on the same track, you're going to need signals.
