I used to work at Burlington. Those designer brands make cheap versions of their clothes to be sold specifically at those stores. They're badly made but at least it's better than online shopping.
@prettyprincessmochi Outlet brand names do the same. When I worked at TJ Maxx, almost everything was slightly damaged, sewn together wrong, had missing pockets, faded, or otherwise defective in some way,
If you know what to look for, the “made for discount retailer” designer stuff can be decent quality. Things like Kate Spade, Vince, Theory, etc. Stuff that’s already quite pricey and known for quality. Even when it’s made for the outlet mall or discount stores, it’s still really good quality. Designer doesn’t mean high end, so I’m not surprised a lot of it is low quality. Also Burlington isn’t known for having expensive things anyway. TJ Maxx Runway and Nordstrom Rack are better for that. Even some of the fake brands sold at these two chains are decent quality. Ross and Burlington not so much. Marshall’s is somewhere in between. ETA: I know how to sew, so I know how to judge quality of stitching, sturdiness of materials, etc. I remember the first time I found out about the “made for discount” secret and it made me sad, but once I got over it and recognized there were still good gems there and understood what I was paying for, I didn’t mind anymore. Because at the end of the day, an outlet Burberry leather wallet was indistinguishable from a full price retail Burberry wallet as far as I was concerned and I paid a price I could afford and an outlet Burberry wallet was still higher quality than a lesser brand at full price. Plus, so much of high end brands are purely markups for the brand name. As for mid tier brands like Kate Spade or Michael Kors, you often get very similar or past season designs but for a lower price and, in most cases, the quality isn’t terrible. I’m sure they absolutely cut corners in the construction of it, but again, compared to a lesser brand at full price, the outlet Kate Spade was still higher quality. Where I start to see diminishing quality is in brands that are already sort of affordable-ish. J.crew, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, etc. They’re not cheap but they’re not expensive per se. And the factory store version of some things are still okay but I definitely absolutely notice a huge difference in the materials and quality of the factory items. The shoes look like they’re from Payless. The clothes are thinner. They don’t use 100% natural fibers. If they do, it’s low quality scratchy versions. Mostly synthetic fibers. They sew with a wider stitch. It’s sloppy. Very obvious. That said, I bought an American Eagle dress at the outlet last year that I absolutely loved and it was not bad at all. Pretty substantial material. I was surprised!

Is this actual news or an advertorial for TJ Maxx and Marshalls? I wonder if a PR firm representing TJX Companies reached out to NBC News to "pitch" this story? For instance, I've seen companies like Waymo team up with local news channels to promote their self-driving cars; it was an advertorial where the local news reporter "tested out" the rider journey inside of a Waymo car to "share the experience" to the audience, but it was just a 2 minute infomercial for the Waymo brand with a reporter presenting it as a "news report." Ross was exposed to selling clothes from vendors that had high levels of lead and other cancer causing substances usually the paint used on faux leather
Millennial here, my local Marshalls heavy discounts great quality skin care. I can pick up a 2.5oz Elizabeth arden daily moisturizer for 7usd was 29.99 at Marshalls originally. For clothing, Savers (second hand) able to pick up name brand clothing from Ralph Lauren to Hugo boss for 3 to 7.99. Also, nearby goodwill carries a decent amount of banana republic jeans and shirts.
A majority of the clothes they sell are defective or not true to size or usually fall apart of shrink when washed and dried. I feel like it’s one & done. A waste of money. Gotta chose carefully.
Really, my parents were middle class but frugal and the only reason we got my clothes from nice stores was because I was tall for my age other than that we shopped at bargain stores.
I'm a millennial that ALWAYS shopped at these stores. I like to look for discounted supplements/herbs/ beauty products & workout stuff for sure. Gotta go back to get a set of dumbbells that are hopefully still there for the reduced price of 5.49
I love TJ Maxx and Marshall, my parents taught me at a young age to shop on a budget to save money for experience/travel. Its a nice feeling when you find a nice item for a steal honestly, kind of remind me of going to Blockbuster and find a good movie to watch lol.
Wow... just wow, only now? OK, most of us have been bargain shopping our entire lives and were raised that way. Hope these people don't ruin it for the rest of us.
I grew up shopping at Salvation Army because prices were too high. Garage sales and Flea Markets too. Marshalls and TJ Maxx have been around for decades. Bargain shopping is not a new trend.
I love shopping at ross, Burlington coat factory and other stores that give discounts. I love shopping at Macy’s because of the discounts and same thing with earthbound trading company
This is weird that this is a “trend”. My mom and dad always shopped at bargain stores or going to thrift stores. A lot of my clothes were hand-me-downs from my older cousin. I still shop bargains and second hand to this day and I’m 36.
The ironic part is that your money drains faster and easier with small purchases and not big purchases, so you're actually losing money in the long run. If you have self control though, you should be fine.
As a g zer myself im sure every single one of us since entering adult hood have been bargin hunting, we didnt "just discover" these stores. WE CANT AFFORD ANYTHING.
I'm 57 now and have always shopped at discount stores. Started at 2nd hand stores when I was young and broke, and went to discount stores when I had more money. I'm a multi millionaire now and I still buy everything at discount prices out of life habits, but I find that I need even less and don't care about brands or showing off as I keep getting older. Happiness is what I appreciate in life, not what I have or own.
They are buying from those places and thrift shops to resell at a much higher price for the most part as their main income source or a side hustle which means that people who really needed those deals can't get them. Those who needed to save money always knew how to look for discounts.
Discount stores aren’t even discounted anymore, it’s just regular pricing. Thrift stores are reselling clothing for more than the original price. Things are ridiculous. Avoid spending your money as much as you can because most businesses are scamming you in this economy.
I wouldn’t call “valued” items if they are buying based on brand name and not quality. Most go for name recognition, not necessity or practicality. I grew up buying for necessity and quality, not for brand admiration or advertisement.
When I was growing up other kids in school would know where you purchased your clothing from because it was looked down on. This is nothing new, I’ve been living like this all my life.

Hoping the store don’t take this as an opportunity to take advantage of us and drive the prices up. These stores have been staples my entire life.
We've been doing this for years! Nothing new!! Ross and Marshalls were the first spots to hit up for back to school and Saturday shopping.
A majority of the clothes they sell are defective or not true to size or usually fall apart of shrink when washed and dried. I feel like it’s one & done. A waste of money. Gotta chose carefully.
yeah its in person shein shopping
Really, my parents were middle class but frugal and the only reason we got my clothes from nice stores was because I was tall for my age other than that we shopped at bargain stores.
Who knew there were alternatives to shopping for Supreme and Gucci products? 🤷
As a college student, those discount stores do sell nice shirt designs and comfortable jeans.
That's pretty much what I wear.
Wow... just wow, only now? OK, most of us have been bargain shopping our entire lives and were raised that way. Hope these people don't ruin it for the rest of us.
Some of these stores are still expensive and higher than online stores. I personally think you find better deals online.
I’ve always shopped at those stores lol Loved Ross since middle school
Thrift stores are becoming more popular now a days in general.
Yup, that’s why it’s more expensive to shop there now. It used to be only for poor people but social media made thrifting a popular thing
@@xJustxZoie the rise of reselling thrift store stuff has ruined thrift shopping sadly
I grew up shopping at Salvation Army because prices were too high. Garage sales and Flea Markets too. Marshalls and TJ Maxx have been around for decades. Bargain shopping is not a new trend.
36 here, and yeah...for a while I didn't know of any other stores. K-Mart, DD's, Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Mervyn's....these were the places.
Yall gotta realize Tj maxx marshalls and Burlington are under the same company i love shopping at Burlingtons
Yep that's why they're almost always next to each other haha
@@Dakid015 right 😂
“Why is there so much trash in landfills ugggh” “TikTok please help!”
just when i thought the media couldn’t get more detached
I love shopping at ross, Burlington coat factory and other stores that give discounts. I love shopping at Macy’s because of the discounts and same thing with earthbound trading company
This is weird that this is a “trend”. My mom and dad always shopped at bargain stores or going to thrift stores. A lot of my clothes were hand-me-downs from my older cousin. I still shop bargains and second hand to this day and I’m 36.
We can’t afford full price things
I don’t even bother with the mall or regular stores lol
The ironic part is that your money drains faster and easier with small purchases and not big purchases, so you're actually losing money in the long run. If you have self control though, you should be fine.
ROSS is my addiction lol Now add Temu to the mix and my decor is undefeated.
Tj maxx is still expensive to me 😂😂
I either go to Ross , and for my home stuff hobby lobby cause they have 50% off sales and season 75-90% off sales
That’s what I’m saying. A shirt at TJMaxx is $16 where I live. Ross is much cheaper.
@@MutedMinimalist yes !!! Or sometimes DDS discounts has 5$or 6$ in clothes but Ross is definitely better in prices
It’s always Ross first for me. Then TJ Maxx. And when you learn the rhythm of sales for Hobby Lobby it’s like you never pay full price again!
im 38 but I like shopping at ross , its like thrifting you never know what goodies might be out
As a g zer myself im sure every single one of us since entering adult hood have been bargin hunting, we didnt "just discover" these stores. WE CANT AFFORD ANYTHING.
Wait til they discover Goodwill, Pawn Shops, and Thrift stores
Breaking news: the two poorest generations are trying to stretch their budgets.
This is the stupidest question Ever 😅😂
I love how they will do anything but admit that the economy is terrible. That’s why people are buying cheaper things and shopping at cheaper places.
I’ve been doing this for 39 years🤦🏾♀️
They are buying from those places and thrift shops to resell at a much higher price for the most part as their main income source or a side hustle which means that people who really needed those deals can't get them. Those who needed to save money always knew how to look for discounts.
Sometimes it’s better to get quality that lasts longer
Discount stores aren’t even discounted anymore, it’s just regular pricing. Thrift stores are reselling clothing for more than the original price. Things are ridiculous. Avoid spending your money as much as you can because most businesses are scamming you in this economy.
Lord now they know about these stores too they gone hike the prices up now.
I wouldn’t call “valued” items if they are buying based on brand name and not quality. Most go for name recognition, not necessity or practicality. I grew up buying for necessity and quality, not for brand admiration or advertisement.
I’m a Gen Xer and I’ve BEEN shopping at all 4 of these stores for the longest.🤷🏽♀️
Found a Carhartt shirt at tjmax for 12$ good deal since I needed new work shirts
It’s because the markups are still insane
It’s not only gen z, it is all gens, just depends on personalities.
Y’all get triggered anytime you see the word gen z 😂
When I was growing up other kids in school would know where you purchased your clothing from because it was looked down on.
This is nothing new, I’ve been living like this all my life.
Brother. These stores are still expensive asf. Catch me in goodwill, thrift stores.
I’m gen z, and me and my family went to thrift stores for YEARS. Why is this popular now..?
