IABP sounds miraculous but would it not cause pulmonary hypertension given that it pumps the blood back into the aorta (and possibly back into the valves)

Yes, Lucifer Broke, that is possible if the patient has valvular disease. However, aortic insufficiency is a contra-indication for IABP therapy.
