The times I used to just break into singing it out loud in the local, or whenever the song drifted into my brain. The effect it had on me! Sounds like it had the same effect on your dad. Gordon Lightfoot was definitely not on my shortlist of artists I'd thought they'd pick for their Piano Lounge cover. But of the three songs they did, this is the one I've replayed the most.
I agree, it's unexpected, but it has introduced me to and many others to something new. The versions of Ghosts Again and Walking In My Shoes are amazing. The videos for those recordings made me feel great. Wish I'd been there.
I'd never heard this song before... And when I read that the boys were going to be covering it, I had a listen to the Scott Walker version. Could see they would do a decent job, but wasn't really excited. I've bawled my eyes out three times at this version reading everyone's associations with the song. Thank you. I'm so happy this era is turning out to be unexpectedly brilliant. Dave and Martin sound like they're singing "together" again... After such a long time. I'm so happy for them. ❤️😭❤️
I think for me, some artists never really resonate with you and as a consequence you miss some beautiful songs. I've never got Scott Walker and I know I will be mocked by some. Never got the Beach Boys either. I'd never heard of Gordon before this, but yes I have explored and appreciated. Mode have done justice to the song and that is emphasised by the emotions this has stirred in many. The whole Piano Room performance brought a tear to my eyes. It is literally like the prodigal son returning. You put your arms out, embrace and hug tightly and whisper "I'm so glad you are back. I have missed you since 1998...".
