    I talked a lot with my friends about Engage's art direction. (Some of us have art major so we tend to do debates about art frequently hahha)
    Perhaps more than calling it "too anime" we reached the conclusion that Engage's character design while being flamboyant and quirky; when aligning the whole rooster it's difficult to point where game title are they from, not to mention some of them don't even feel from the same title.
    It's not that the art is bad, (because it is not) it's just that the art direction is all over the place. But I do agree with what you said about them taking all the questionable current anime trends (I feel they explored more about vtuber influencers) and by doing this, instead of choosing color schemes that could work good together, they jump all around. Some characters look like Pokemon trainers, some look like vtubers, some look like "Tales of" characters - they just don't feel cohesive.
    I understand that some characters belong to different regions. But even then, in other games you can tell a character belongs to another region but lives in the same world.
    It's very interesting to study and talk about tbh, and just to finish; I'll state these are just but my humble opinions and conclusions. :3

      this is very true. the emblems ion this new style look incredible. some characters look incredible however for the 4/5 different regions theyre all incredibly disconnected and when you see ivy in the second region everything feels so amiss

    Fire Emblem has reflected anime of the time that particular Fire Emblem game is released for the most part
    Yes this includes 90’s anime and Genealogy to my detriment

    Sorry but i think each fire emblem having its own identity is way better than them all being too serious or too memey. I like variety. Three houses was so dark and having engage with different gameplay story and characters and tone of the game is good. I'm not good at explaining myself and doing paragraphs so if this makes little sense sorry

    • @tbc1880
      @tbc1880 Год назад +2

      I think that a too memey game should just he a spin off. Which honestly engage comes off as.
      And while too serious is a thing I think there needs to be a strong balance of serious to goofy and fun in the story. Like 60/40 in terms of time spent as one or the other.

    • @ThatoneFelicia
      @ThatoneFelicia Год назад

      @TBC1 yeah I agree with that serious fun balance

    I think what made people super mad about Engage's art style is that it's coming hot off the heels of the muted, dull, grounded character designs of Three Houses/Hopes, and this arguably goes too far in the opposite direction.

    • @tbc1880
      @tbc1880 Год назад +3

      I didn't engage (pun unintended) much with three houses. I'm more in touch with telius and the 3ds games. And engage still goes too far for me. It's really off. Doesn't feel like a game war can exist in or have any stakes I'll take seriously in. And the character designs are so out there they don't feel like they live in the world or same world. Or if they do they are basically the elites in hunger games.
      But with the overall video I 100% agree with its just copying the worst of modern anime. Like I don't watch any anime for the most part. I've seen shows I've been recommended or seen as very good. I think latest was gundam ibo, and only tropy shows were Mirai Nikki which started the yandere trope from the get go, but honestly handles it a bit better than most that takes from it, and to love ru because I dislike fanservice to a high degree and wanted to get over it. And that one annoyed me because it had some good beats and things with the story but it's an ecchi show so it C-blocks that. Well given how few I've watched I can keep going and say I've seen the big three a good bit, Jojo part 1-2, madoka magica, rewrite an anime of an VN which while I love the anime the VN is 500x better somehow, and kaiba. Honestly most of my list to watch is older shows. Like kyousougigia, chobits and galaxy express 999.
      So idk might just be my tastes but I do think if you made a collage of characters from every FE title together, told people who've never seen FE to figure out which titles belong together in series while also leaving the idea they could be the same series. Like say "these characters come from a game in a long running series, group them by the series they are a part of." The one thing I know for sure is tokyo mirage sessions #FE and engage would always be together or alone.
      You know what that just makes it simpler.
      TLDR: engage comes off as a spin off game like #FE, not a mainline game if even and FE game.

      People say Three Houses is too anime too. People also say Echos was too anime. It's almost like these people are crazy and should be ignored. You can say you like more grounded, mute, uniform styles without disparaging a whole medium. But even if you look at say the holy grail of "not anime" FE4, bruh that shit is in the same style as popular anime back then. Those people are smoking the bad shit.
      And you know if the FE team wants to change up shit, let them cook.

  • @24hr-Gaming
    @24hr-Gaming Год назад +5

    People don't want to be pushed into a locker for admitting they like 80s space opera anime. Because that is the "not anime" anime that they like.
    I think these designs were chosen because they'd make the flashy animations stand out. But it's weird that people saying this shit is too anime when the designer has had maybe 1 minor anime work under their belt. They're primarily a light novel artist.
    But all of those people are psychotic because "too anime" can mean literally anything. Same for anyone ranting about "modern anime" are smoothbrain neanderthals. You just have to look at the history of anime to see how full of shit they are. For all the ranting about pre-2010s anime, I remember those times people were 100% saying shit like K-On, Angel Beats, and Haruhi were "ruining" anime and there was both a lot of garbage and gems back then too. I think people remember the gems and not the large swaths of garbage. Stuff like Code Geass, Nanoha, Elfen Lied, Strike Witches were popular back then. If you went back and looked at the yearly anime release, most of it was garbage just 1) there are more anime releasing now and 2) people are more aware of anime. You can actually watch shit instead of hoping someone in Indonesia or Taiwan with too much time on their hands would upload a pirated subbed copy and most of the stuff uploaded was only the stuff that was popular.
    Anime is just a medium of entertainment and can be used to tell any kind of story with all kinds of variety in art style, tone, and direction. Vinland Saga, Megalobox, Dorohedoro for example are very different from Bocchi the Rock, Dragon Maid, and Love is War. But they are all anime you weebs. Just say you like specific types of stories instead of looking like a dumbass.

    Too bad the game didn't do that hot apparently so rip anymore Echoes games with that style. It sucks cuz it would have been cool to see more older games updated like that. Seems now, if we do get that, it might go down the Engage looking route.

    Honestly my issue with Fire Emblem isn't the art style, its the fact that we've went from an serious/semi-serious plot line about fantasy medieval politics to feeling like a Shonen Battle anime fanfic.
    -Lords and Lord equivalents aren't units that need to be protected anymore, all of them feeling like vanguard characters that are invincible rather than needing to be protected due to their story importance or lack of combat experience due to their station.
    -The create-a-characters added to the series, which includes new mystery of the emblem, all feel like they're getting pandered to at literally every conceivable moment.
    -Take and Drop, which required at least a mild thought process to use, was replaced with Pair up essentially turning half of the cast into equippable stat sticks rather than actual units.
    -They need to come up with some time warp nonsense to let you use your own children as units as soon as you marry them, simply to pad out the character roster and fantasize about the fact that your OTP or Self insert fucked.
    -Characters are hyper-sexualized even if that wasn't their original design intent, look at Lyn's official art throughout the years as an example of this.
    It just seems like the plot and the gameplay are suffering, Three houses felt like a step in the right direction but it still felt like an Hogwarts/Fire Emblem Fanfic at times. To be honest I might just be writing these issue ad-lib style to vent some frustration about the series.
    ...or maybe I'm just a boomer or something lol.

    The newer games aren't just popular because they're newer. The older games, as much as I love the older games, didn't sell well. Awakening sold 2 million. Most FE games never crossed 1. Fates, ugh, sold more than Awakening and Three Houses sold more than Fates. Even with the current fight between the newbie Three Houses fans and Engage, Engage will likely sell on par or more than Three Houses. It's not recency bias. The old games were on the verge of the franchise becoming irrelevant, and since Awakening is considered a major franchise by Nintendo. Leaning more into the rpg side of srpg, and adapting to more modern audience of jrpgs and anime has been the path to growing the franchise. Sticking religiously, almost cultishly, to the formula laid down by the Famicom games won't. I know of FE fans upset we aren't still treated to sprites on a map with no voice acting as the artistic standard for the games. But that's not going to happen.

    I've always said that Fire Emblem would go and embellish grandiose tropes and yeah I do see that people pushed art to be a bit more different, but in this they have strong relationships and gameplay. But I do hate that people don't give Engage a chance due to this dumb stigma of this "too anime". In the end, stuff followed basic tropes for the time but it didn't really felt like it until Awakening. Like damn, Awakening was they last chance to get Fire Emblem on the map.

    There’s just a distinction between fire emblem games before awakening and the games after awakening (not really including 3Houses)

    I will not stand for this anti Selena propaganda
    But I do understand why people don't like her. And yeah, Fire Emblem has somewhat followed Anime style writing, it's just that anime itself has degraded nowadays. The designs themselves are alright to me, the fact that multiple characters have over the top designs also fits with more recent anime going for every character having flashy designs
