The town of Kilkenny was infamous for cat fights where the cats were suspended by their tails. Once when someone important (I don't remember who it was) visited unexpectedly during a fight, someone prematurely ended it by severing the cat's tails. The stricken cats ran off and when asked about the tails remaining, the story given was that they fought so hard that they ate each other, leaving only the tails. Coincidentally, I also learned that during a crossword. It was in 6th grade English class and it was the one clue that no-one in the class got right. It was decades before the intermet, so not easy to look up quickly.
Hello, I am an American and I do admire these puzzles. Can anyone explain the worplay on the below clue? The AI bot doesn't seem understand it either. I was able to figure out that the answer is Notices based on the definition of spots. I am guessing is that learners is somehow No, time is abbrev T, and five is ices. I have no clue what the first and last parts mean if I am right. My weakest point is obviously British terminology. The answer to 5D is Founder in this puzzle. I know they somtimes reference other answers when they use a number in a clue. Thanks! Learners with time for five spots (7)

I thoroughly enjoyed watching you solve this one.
I biffed Kilkenny without a second thought - the Kilkenny cats fought so hard, only their tails were left.

Hello, Learners=Novices, Time=t and Five=V (in roman numerals). Therefore replace the V in novices with T and you get Notices which means Spots
Thank you! That makes perfect sense.
