Oh same
Snap!
He said he wouldn't go 20 minutes before he began... overall, went about an hour over the course of 3 episodes of "Park Bench with spooky lighting from Mosquitoville, UK".
IM STILL NOT OVER THE FACT THAT YOU SPENT 3 WEEKS WITH CHRIS HADFIELD
Yep, me too.
I still haven't figured out who Chris Hadfield is, other than "That person that met Tom Scott" :P
Canadian ISS commander.
607 Famous astronaut
Nevermind the fact that he was Chris hadfield’s ROOMMATE 😭
I'm not going to lie, I'm a little bit jealous of Tom's Trip! --Matt
Matt and Tom gr8
I'm pretty sure that everybody else watching these videos are jealous of Tom's trip.
Matt and Tom aren't we all.
Matt and Tom hey, wouldn't sunglasses be a good idea in the Arctic? the sun's not out, but the snow is reflecting huge amounts of light
I'm jealous that Tom can apparently blow $500 on minor travel expenses. I'd have to mooch off people for food and lodging and use the $500 just to be able to make a trip within my home country.
So, I work in a building right next to a dock used by cruise ships, and when Tom mentioned the 'Crystal Serenity', I turned around to get a second look at the cruise ship parked right outside the window... called the 'Crystal Serenity'. Small world!
Oh man. I will never forget your reaction when you won the auction (and how BIZARRE that was that no one else bid after you!). This footage = genius. That's it. Let's go on another icebreaker at some point Tom. Yes?
And to add, you perfectly described the existential feeling at the end of the trip between realizing the grim complexities of the Arctic (through history and its present/future), and the starkness of Resolute and saying goodbye.
I wondered if there had been sort of a conspiracy to let him win that.
Tom. Say "yes". Don't ask questions. Say "yes" to this.
And a big welcome back to (Mad) Cap'n Tom! :D
+Mark Shinn Helmsman! I was just the helmsman, and happy to stay that way. - Tom
Oh, hush with your details! :P
Loved hearing the stories BTW, thanks :)
Matt and Tom "Mostly Sane Helmsman Tom" ?
Should have taken the tricorn!
@@mattandtom sure....
HE HAS POLICIES. HE HAS EXPERIENCE.
HE HAS A DUCK ON HIS HEAD.
MOSTLY SANE HELMSMAN TOM
PROBABLY SLIGHTLY SAFER TO HAVE DRIVING YOUR BOAT THAN MAD CAP'N TOM (PROBABLY).
Canadian 20 year old weighing in. Learning about the forced relocation of Inuit people was part of our high school history curriculum in BC. Along with the way black loyalists were treated (and lied to) in Nova Scotia after the American Revolution, and all the horrors of the residential schools. (We even toured an old residential school, and spoke with women the age of my parents who attended that school). It's important that students learn about the dark parts of their country's history.
I'm from Germany and totally agree with you. Students need to learn about the dark parts of their history to stop it from happening Again
from Australia. The treatment of the local aboriginal tribes were appalling. They had their children stolen from them at random, and they were still weren't counted as people in the census until the 1980's
As a Brit it would take 100 years just to teach all of our dark history, they barely scratch the surface at school
@@ala0284 The same for US education. So many of my nation's crimes I had to learn (and still am learning) about online, and maybe some things were briefly mentioned up through high school, but so much I didn't actually hear the details of until my college history class.
“Those that don’t learn from the mistakes from the past are doomed to repeat them”. Sorry I can’t remember who said this.
The fact that it gets darker as the story gets to the end makes for a perfect atmosphere and a perfect parallel to winter arriving in the arctic
Mad Cap'n Tom strikes again
Seems he's been demoted to Helmsman.
@@ragnkja Well he sailed onto the beach so what do you expect?
I don't think anyone should give a dead pirate that died cuz he sailed onto the beach, that had a duck on his head, power on a massive ice breaker, shouldn't they?
When I was a little kid - maybe around 11 or 12 years old - I was allowed to steer one of the Croatian Jadrolinja ferryboats in the middle sea. I was shown the compass (I guess that's what it was, it showed the degrees) and was given orders by the captain (or whoever it was that was actually responsible) like "2 degrees left", "half a degree right", "that was too much, a little bit back again". Then afterwards I was allowed to look down into the engine room and I remember seeing this big ships diesel with its cam rockers opening and closing the valves rocking back and forth all the time. I'm afraid the ferryboat has since been scrapped (it was already quite old back then), but it was a great childhood memory, which has dulled a lot, and I regret that.
FINALLY
SANE CAPTAIN TOM
Mad Cap'n and Helmsman Tom!
Tom's new way to break the ice at parties? 'I once got to steer an ice breaker'
This might just be the best channel of youtube. From dropping drums of a hill to making apps with emojis and going to the Arctic. I love this channel.
*A* dark chapter in Canada's history? God, the entire treatment of native peoples is *the* dark chapter in Canada's history. This is just a small part of a huge story.
Also the conditions of Chinese workers while building the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Japanese-Canadian Interment camps during WWII
And what happened to the Acadians. And the Beothuk people for that matter.
Yeah Canada does have a lot of history which isn't often brought up anymore among the public. At least it is still taught in most schools though
Every state has some natives killed/bullied/enslaved/etc. Then the newcomers become native.
History is not a nice and pleasant thing. There is no nation in the world without things to be ashamed of, because humans are human. We're usually pretty selfish, often rather greedy, and rather good at ignoring other people's problems if they're not also our problems too.
Your one hour monologue was the perfect "big picture" narrative to go with Ben's daily vlogs. You answered so many questions that I had about the trip! I'm Canadian and aware of the forced relocations, but the abandonment compared to Greenland really opened my eyes.
Tom Scott got to be Wesley Crusher for 5 minutes.
But wesley actually knew what he was doing.
Many would argue the contrary.
HEH.
Tom, Please Please, upload the video. Whether it be on this channel or yours. I'm sure we'd love to see it!
he has
Do you mind telling us where to find it? I couldn't . . .
This trilogy was brilliant. Went from funny, touching, funny, touching, funny.... quite wondeful.
Ramble on, Tom, ramble on. This is amazing.
Tom, I would love to see an unedited/minimally edited video of you on the bridge/steering the ship! The back and forth + translation stuff would be fascinating!
"I'm not going to get to 20 minutes on this, but that's ok."
*Checks video time *
Oh you were so wrong.
14:33 For those that are interested, 'The Terror' is a series about that fatal expedition. It's based on the dairy of the captain, but also a bit intertwined with some fantasy. I definitely recommend watching it!
Second this!
This series of three was one of the best things I've seen on RUclips.
Thanks so much for a very atmospheric and interesting spoken adventure journal!
Thanks for holDING the microphone, Matt! :D.

Tom: "i am not going to get to 20 minutes"
Me: looks down on the timeline... sees 21 minutes
Considering that you're never the celebrity to your friends and how well known Tom is in science circles there's a chance that Chris Hadfield told a story to some of their friends how he got to be roommates with Tom Scott for three weeks and they are excited about that. Considering all the amazing things Tom has done over the years he's not that far from Astronaut in my opinion.
mad capt'n tom scott drove an icebreaker
Wow, that's an old old old 737. I didn't think there were any of those still in service. I haven't seen one like that for decades. Must be one of the old gravel kitted -200's.
See if you can find the old show "Ice Pilots", a show about the people that fly stuff around northern Canada, mostly NWT and northern BC, in WW2 era and other old prop planes that they essentially bring back from the dead (DC-3 and Lockheed Electra L-188s plus an oddball collection of other prop planes). It is '"reality TV" so......but there's some really nice footage in there, and most of it is fairly accurately portrayed.
@@Nick1979BN na, it's much simpler than that. The 737-200 was the last big airliner built with a gravel runway option, they're still used for those kind of airstrips.
You can see the drag behind the nose wheel if you look carefully.
I think they’re a lot less fuel efficient and eco friendly but much much tougher
@@ala0284 they're not tougher as such. The intakes are higher and smaller on the low bypass turbofans so the gravel kit can keep foreign objects out of the engines. The modern high bypass engines with the huge fans hang low.
Were I rich, I would send Tom to the most remote places so that he could explore and make films for us. Tales Of The Arctic are great!
Please don't ever stop making the park bench! These videos are one of the most enjoyable parts of my week. Thanks for sharing your stories.
T^T They did.... and I'm so disappointed. Even if it's just an occasional park bench...
This whole series has been amazing, in fact the entire thing has been amazing, I literally do not have the word to describe how happy I am to live in a world where things like this trip happen through the kindness of the right person at the right time
Thank you
It's not about the hat. 5 minutes at the helm of an Ice Breaker is an experience of lifetime. An Astronaut, who was also a Commander of the International Space Station guided Tom. I am so envious!
If *you* were sharing a cabin with someone who spoke fluent technical Russian, wouldn't you ask them to come along if you got the chance to helm the _Капитан Хлебников?_
The irony of rewatching these, and after Tom gushing about Chris for an hour of video, getting the Masterclass advert with Hadfield :)
Listening to you describe your departure as the others are arriving almost makes me cry. Genuinely brilliant, Tom. You can tell how sorry you are to see this end.
I just got an ad featuring Chris Hatfield while watching this video!
I've just finished watching all three parts of the Tales From The Arctic in a row. That was epic, thank you Tom!
Makes me wonder if that glacier you walked on even remotely looks like that today with the news of the glacial retreats in Greenland this year. And of course, Cmdr Hadfield as a room mate for 3 weeks translating technical Russian while you were at the helm of an ice breaker. The stories you have. :)
Congrats on winning the charity auction! Not only were you there with Chris Hadfield but you STEER A BOAT. Amazing!
he didn't win it he bought an item
Well, you do if it's an auction. Like eBay. You bid the highest and you win the item. :)
Cap'n tom scott, bringing back the old pirate stories XD living it out now!
Oh god, Mat and Tom are traveling to WEST VIRGINIA? Have they lost their minds?!
Now here's the real question - is Tom passing on that Soviet captain's hat *before or after* going to West Virginia?
You talked about the charity auction. What were they raising funds for? Because after watching this and the Resolute video, I felt like I had to go and do something about that. It would be a great gesture if for their next charity auction, the funds went towards supporting the people of Resolute. I have no idea if you have a way to pass that on or even if either of you will see this, but it's worth a shot. I just wish I had the means to help directly.
BTW, why do these videos have so few views? I love them. So easy to listen, educational, so lovely :) Thank you very much.
The plane you left on was a 737-200, my favorite version of the 737.
Yay, I found the DUNNNNN sound in the free sound library. Jingle punks, Killing with kindness (sting). :p
I could listen to this for hours. Thanks again, Tom. You were a good choice :)
I guess mosquitoes will be one of the species having a great time in the future, so this recording can pass as foreshadowing. :D
Tom, for small videos that you don't want on the main channel, make a second/extra bits channel? Also, can we call you Mad Helmsman Tom?
I'd happily have a million more of these
I am going to miss the Arctic videos from you guys and Ben Brown. They have been absolutely awesome.
Tom that is a 737-200. Good recognition! :)
take me home
country roads
to the place
I belong
+MidtownSkyport I kept trying to play that over the car stereo. I kept being overruled. Still have it in my head. - Tom
have my like because I wasn't quick enough to make that joke myself!
Missed Game of Thrones joke anytime after 11:35. "Winter is coming. No! Winter has come."
These are just awesome! Nice work guys
You two really can vlog, although you seem to need to be together to do it.
0:21 No because imagine ducktales with Tom as huey, Matt as dewey and Chris as Louie, and then gary as scrooge
Tom, you are now called Mad Hel'man Tom. Because you said yourself that you weren't the captain.
The amazing voyages of Tom Scott.
Hi, yeah, just now binging your whole main channel and the Matt and Tom channel - it's perfect to have on while I work from home. I could watch/listen to you talk about adventures like this for hours yet! This was so amazing and enjoyable to watch. Looks like you had a blast. It's really ignited that adventure flame in my heart, I can't wait until the world is ready for adventures again. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome back, Helmsman Tom. Thank you for sharing your Artic adventure, it was very interesting.
Wow! This was such an experience, even just watching these 3 videos is quite a big deal!
Thanks for Sharing, Tom. I can't wait to see what Chris Hadfield and his team cook up next. it'll be tough to top this. Then again, it was tough to top space. So, adventure awaits!
watching again and this time the timer didn't get me
also, stuff like this is why I'm glad y'all did Park Bench. I wish it'd return, but I totally understand for it not
Put that video up of steering the boat , Please
+Vincent Lee You see the good bits in here. The rest is a bit of a mess :) - Tom
+Matt and Tom maybe release it as hidden video?
Don't care if it's a mess. Would still like to see the full thing please.
Tom, if what ive learned from youtube over the last year is anything but a tiny bit true: no matter whatever you mentioned in a video, there'll always be someone who'll be like "show the whole thing". Just upload it as a hidden video on this channel or you main, who cares, and link it. It still "doesnt really exist", but for whoever out there who insist in having it, its there :P
I would love that to!!
12:25 That's a 737 - 200. They're still used by airlines in the Canadian north because of their ability to land on gravel runways. You can see the anti-gravel kits on the engines in your photos. Was it in a half cargo configuration ?
Its the top of the world as we know it.
And I feel fine.
Sooo... Mad Cap'n Tom has joined Soviet Navy now?... :)
I mean... he has a red shirt for a reason :D!
I’m just listening Tom talk about climate change and serious issues and then I just hear *”OWW!”*
10:10 Yes, Tom is not kidding. I'm a Canadian and I love my country but we're not perfect and I'm ready to admit it. We've got work to do to make it better. Tom, I'm happy that your experience here was positive, thank you for visiting. You're welcome any time.
West Virginia! You two are so close to us! we are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area! You should come visit!
That bit at the end did genuinely hit me like ... well an icebreaker
How to make me add a bullet point to my bucket list, and destroy the idea two videos later. Thank you for this recollection.
Fantastic stories, Tom (but how could they not be?)! And, from a technical perspective, Matt did a great job on audio; a couple times when Tom got quiet I saw you carefully move the mic closer...
incredible journey. thank you for sharing
My 9yr old son was allowed to steer the car ferry to the Isle of White. He loved it.
So i can only imagine what it was like in the Arctic.
Oh my god oh my god oh my god. Wow Tom.
I still watch this
Arctic ice distribution varies and has a lot of cycles contributing to it. Ice levels are completely normal and that route has since iced over again.
Mad Cap'n Tom has finally been found!
The ballad of Mad comrade Tom
Thank you so, so much for sharing your perspective on this. Truly, astounding. I enjoy that you make an exception for hats and, of course, for the experience.
I need to go up there before the ice is gone. its been a dream for forever, i need to go do it.
Really enjoyed watching these past three videos. Super interesting stuff, sounds like an amazing experience.
Fantastic stories! Well worth the hour I stayed up past my bedtime!
Keep rambling. I love your stories. Or you two just talking.
I realize you almost definitely will not see this in time (and it is entirely probable that you know this already), but I must say, if your going to the eastern bit of West Virginia, you need to see Shenandoah National Park. I "live" in Virginia (college in Florida now, but still), and it is an amazing place.
Well I also once steered a boat, but it wasn't an ice breaker, it was a small taxi boat somewhere in California. The captain let me do it because it was raining, and the only inside the boat had was the control room (I didn't ask to steer, he just said "do you want to steer it?").
I love this channel
mad captain tom returns
these are so good - love this channel
These videos are so entertaining! I hope Tom get more opportunities for such trips haha.
I should of waited till to end to comment this haha
Brilliant end to Tom's arctic voyage!
Oh my god, I would've wanted to steer that SO much. You're so lucky!
I've always wanted to go to that radio quiet zone in West Virginia.
I enjoyed these stories. Thanks.
Mad helmsman Tom.
If the friend no longer wants the hat, I bet that a local museum would love it.
Absolutely fascinating! Thank you so much.
The ballad of Mad Helmsm'n Tom
Shoulda just called this video, "The Story of how Tom rented an icebreaker for 5 minutes for 400 bucks."
