    Retired F-16 pilot here and I gotta tell you…WOW!! VERY VERY COOL!! Sitting here with a huge smile on my face as I watch this. 👍🏼😊
    Edit: I’m also seeing the advantage of having something like this for JTACs on the battlefield. They could provide their own mini-CAS.

      Glad to win the approval of a Viper driver😁! I honestly believe this is a very cost effective training platform for anyone that want to get realistic training in basic combat maneuvers and formation flying. Not for system simulation like DCS can provide, but intuitive stick and rudder competency. A fun pastime that trains essential skills. I have fitted reflector sight in the cockpit before, and with munitions could as you said provide mini-CAS. Maybe even something fun for cadets to do: ruclips.net/video/G5nRet-r62s/видео.html
      Ps. It’s also possible to have onscreen display of critical air data and attitude ladder like on F-16 HUD.

All you do is control the elevator via two strings and hope the plane runs out of gas before you do. We could have never imagined something like FPV could ever exist! So cool.

      FPV is a different way of flying RC planes. It’s a equalizer, so to speak. It does not matter how big or expensive the RC plane is, once flying from the cockpit, the view is largely the same. And most RC flyers prefer looking at the planes from outside. And I do both fly cockpit view and line of sight view. Both are very satisfying. I love getting two uses from the same plane!

      Actually, funny thing, its thanks to mems technology and cell phones that sensors like accelerometers and radio technology has become so cost effective and readily available. Most of the time the hard part is writing the code to operate the system (though you can usually piece together most of it with git hub code). The sensors and radio link stuff is (for the most part) all plug and play with mostly standardized connectors.
      I remember when stepper motors and servos were like $20 a pop. Accelerometer ICs were massive, and expensive, if you could find a place that would sell them to a random civilian. This was also back when if you updated your GPS location faster than once every 10 seconds it was assumed you were designing an backyard ICBM....
      But yeah man, thanks to the tech explosion of the oughts and teens, I can get a hand full of sensors and motors for what a cheap crappy motor cost me when I was a kid! Of course antennas still seem to be a bit on the pricey side for the fancier designs. But considering the R&D and precision that goes into high frequency high bandwidth antennas and LNAs I suppose it makes sense....

    I'm a pilot and I was blown away by the reality of it. This is a new cost effective way to train fighter pilots that represents middle ground between pure simulation and actual flying. Its a way to safely develop skill but without eliminating all of the risk since the pilot is actually flying an aircraft and can actually crash the vehicle which costs money, but without the risk of physical injury to the pilot. Excellent demo; I am really impressed.

A five channel control tx had 10 buttons that came out in the late 50's , early 60's. When I first learned to fly my 3 ch Buzzard with a 12 pound tx that sat on the ground with a 15' antenna, I wished I could come up with an idea to fly the plane using an onboard camera like this. It's finally been done. Absolutely incredible. The weird thing is my name is also Cliff. Down River Radio Control Club.

      Glad to hear from an RC modeling pioneer Cliff! I started flying RC in 1990 in Texas. A few years later was fortunate to be exposed to full scale flying. The dream started then for me to imitate the full scale flying experience in RC planes. I just had to wait for video transmission tech to advance and miniaturize. The amazing thing is the execution of this concept is now simpler then everyone thinks. The goggles and camera system are from an aerial photography drone company. The head-tracking function actually uses the buddy-box function that has been common in RC for decades. Instead of assigning student transmitter flight controls, the master transmitter assigns gimbal channels control to the head-tracker, as simple as that.
      RC hobby equipment has gotten more affordable, capable, smaller as the years go by. It’s a great time to fly RC, both conventionally and in this new way. Cheers!

Another interesting thing that really caught my eye with this head tracking setup u have, is that I worked on the original concepts of military head tracking helmets with iris tracking back in the early 80's. This was science fiction back then and extremely expensive. I'm not going to say what flight vehicle it was, but it was cancelled and rebooted 3 times to try and get the cost down. Now it is finally up and running by advancements in tech we didn't have back then. So when I see how simple this rc setup is and how inexpensive it is, it is absolutely amazing.

      Don't get your expectations up this dude's set up is over $1000 ez. Have you flown fixed wings? These rc guys really make it look ez but they have many years experience and crashes.
      Flying fpv with a fixed camera is still fun you don't need head tracking (altho supper cool).
      Cheapest way to start is going to coast around $200 depending how you go.
      First do you want to fly fixed wing or a quad? Both are fun.
      I suggest the aeroscout from horizon. They make a big and small one depending on how much you want to spend.
      Then pick up a fpv head set from Amazon around 50~100 eachine makes decent ones for a good price.
      They make all in one fpv cameras but I find they burn up ez. For just a few more dollars they sell the camera and module.
      Just thinking about it his set up is probably closer to $2000.

    It is nice to have the entire field to yourself! EDIT: Also, FPV/VR has a learning curve for our bodies. Vertigo or nausea is not uncommon. It gets better with time, but slowly. Dramamine helps. Short sessions at first helps. Do not try to "push through" the feelings of nausea. It will get worse. The first onset of feeling nausea, stop and take a break. Then go back. Don't try to ignore it, just take a break. It will help in the long run.

      When I started using VR goggles, I fiddled around in "safe", low speed environments for a week, before flying in VR. By that time, either I was fully adjusted, or I'm just more resilient. I then offered the chance of a VR flight to two people who were uninitiated, and they both felt nauseous. (I'm not talking about FPV/VR, but computer simulator VR). So either people respond differently, or our brains need the adjustment. It definitely helps to have a high framerate on the goggles themselves.
      Having seen this video, I'm pretty sure I want to progress from VR sim flying through the actual pilot license I'm working on now to VR FPV!

    • @motionsic
      @motionsic  2 года назад

      @@tomash9116 glad you are inspired to become a real pilot! And this is certainly a great tool to gain flying experience fast and inexpensively. By the way, VR denotes virtual reality. • @adcraziness1501
      @adcraziness1501 Год назад +1

      @@motionsic It's just First Person View, it's not really VR or AR. If it were AR it would have a 3D model of a cat or a vase or something that interacted with your environment on screen. But Tomas H, it does depend on the individual. I would think age has something to do with it. Younger people adapt, older adults who have never experienced visual motion stimuli without the corresponding inner ear signals, it can be rough! Our brains expect a certain input and when they don't get it, they throw out error messages. "Just make him feel sick or something" sounds about like my brain's error message. The first time I ever played Quest 2, with no other VR at any point prior, I kept playing and got thoroughly nauseated so much I threw up on two separate occasions until I realized it was the game. That advice of "don't try to ignore the nausea and push through it, take a break at the first sign" was a hard earned lesson for me, for free :) EDIT: Another thing you can do is when you feel that first little twinge of nausea, is to close your eyes. It's the visual input that's not matching up with inner ear signals, if you cut the visual feed for a second your brain can readjust and most of the times you will be fine. But if you keep pushing, taking a little closed eyes break won't work you'll get sicker the second you open them again if you go too far.

Lucky for me, while trying to learn I would fly with an experienced R/C pilot next to me that could take over if I got disoriented. With a first person view, it seems to me, it would be quite a bit easier for newer RC pilots to keep track of their aircraft's orientation relative to the ground (as long as the telemetry is working).
