Gabriel Luna actually went ahead brought a PS and played both of the games. You can feel his performance is so inspired by the games. He nailed Tommy's vocal mannerisms.
I loved the opening episode … The best opening episode I've ever seen. It was the little subtle things that caused the tension rise for the virus starting to begin, Like subtle coughs in the classroom & Grandma scene. Can't wait for the next episode.
Should be a prequel the last of us would be so good if they explored the first few days to weeks of the apocalypse starting from the outbreak ending 3 weeks into it in the perspective of different characters of course
I mean that 20 years could be how they show the firefly uprising, tommy leaving joel for them, maybe he’s smuggled other people and lost them? Could be sick
Well Ellie has grown up in a harsh reality. Sarah knew her dad as her dad, and then had reality completely flipped on is head and she's watching her dad flip out and beat the shit out of people for the first time she has seen. For a kid that's a lot of change in a matter of minutes.
The Adlers grandmother wasn’t infected because she went to the hospital (future show spoilers ahead); Joel mentions to Ellie that the early infection spread through tainted yeast [edit: flour, not yeast]. The Adlers were feeding the grandmother bread/biscuits earlier in the episode, and even offered it to Sarah.
Makes sense! Far more sense than the hospital angle. That didnt add up for me. But then it also adds a new wrinkle with how did the fungus spread and so quickly, all at once. Like we hear about it happening in Jakarta. Then we see the arabic shopkeepers in on the event. And we see Sarahs classmate with the jitters. Not sure there really is a plausible explanation for how it could actually spread globally, all at the same time, everywhere at once though.
I think in this series, they're saying it's grain/wheat rather than yeast; they mentioned ergot in the beginning, which has roots in a theory that the Salem with trials were fueled by paranoid delusions/hallucinations caused by ergot tainted grain. Also, the only other person we visually see expressing symptoms is a young boy wearing a medical alert bracelet. What does he and the grandma have in common? They might both have weakened immune systems which opens them up go infection (especially fungus infections which are much less common in healthy individuals). The only explanation for Jakarta I can think of is either a) because that's where cordyceps millitaris (the specific fungus that infects the ants and insects) is native to or b) they had the tainted grain first/shipped it out (I'll be honest, I know more about medicine and mycology than I do Indonesia and their farming practices)
I honestly am very grateful my favorite videogame had one of the best opening episodes for a tv show adaptation, its so damn good. My only gripe is that some of the dialogue feels too rushed, however it makes sense that Joel would be very short with Ellie anyway given their situation. Never thought it would be as great as it was.
Less is more. Its like a comic book movie adaptation for Superman, Spiderman, Batman, etc. We know Uncle Ben died, we know the Waynes got mugged, we know you're from Krypton. Heard the story a million times already, just get to the point in your "new retelling" of the iconic character. Its a zombie apocalypse. We get it. Less is more so that you can actually go over things the audience needs to know within the time you have to tell a story. We really dont need a 10 minute recap of what we already know as an audience. Thats why they did what they did in some parts and, frankly, its the right call.
I like how they follow Joel's daughter throughout the episode as the main character, getting you invested and attached to this cute nice little girl, only to have her murdered. That was good writing.
They did an incredible job with making you feel connected to Sarah and Joel’s father-daughter relationship. In just one episode they managed to make you feel strong emotions when a character that we just met, dies. Outstanding acting from tommy, Joel and Sarah
Honestly I really liked it. I don't mind the changes either. It's nice to see the story told in a different way. We'll still always have the games in the end anyways. But I am very impressed.
@@freedomofspeech3792 Pascal's woke bs in and out of film ALWAYS annoys me. They could have literally found ANYONE that looked like Joel who could have nailed that role just like with the Mandalorean. He is not perfect or necessary for either role and he isn't this "revolutionary actor"...
This was a great first episode. Glad they actually expanded things a bit with Sarah and gave her more screen time. Pedro Pascal is great as Joel. Bella Ramsey actually sounds just like Ellie. I also dug the opening set in the 1960s. They really went all out with just the first episode alone. Can't wait to see what they have in store for the rest of the season.
The camera angles in the scene where they were trying to escape the city was cinematic genius, and replacing the car crash with a PLANEE CRASHING is an incredible change
The fact that troy baker, Ashley Johnson plus two others will be on the show but play other characters is cool. I think Ashley is going to play ellie's mom.
She’s not, shes said to be playing a pregnant woman that Joel and ellie find on their journey and is forced to give birth in a very heated part of the show. Troy baker will be playing a raider or a member of a survivors group of some sort
Watched it the moment 9’oclock hit. I can’t wait for everyone to turn around and say how much they were waiting for this show and didn’t make negative comments about the cast lol
No matter the cast, it was always going to get some pushback. I was surprised at how quickly I embraced these actors though. Ellie was the toughest, but immediately I melted when she starts cussing. That’s the Ellie I know and love.
LOVE the adaptation so far. Pedro seems invested in the role & the way he screamed "Tommy help me" ripped me heart out. Very excited to see where this goes.
I'm so glad they've maintained Joel's dead inside secondary character to Ellie's sarcastic snarky self. Pedro Pascal is a perfect babysitter actor in both this and Mandalorian.

99% sure this is going to be crap. 2 minutes in they’re pushing global warming nonsense. 5 minutes in they go woke and swap characters races. That’s 2 strikes, one more and I’m turning this show off and am done with the series.
You misunderstood something about Cordyceps, and fungi generally -- they didn't say that warming planet would enable Cordyceps to spread to non-tropical parts of the world, they said that a warming world could enable the evolution of Cordyceps (and other fungi) that can live at _human body temperature_ --- which, presently, they can not, at least not very well, not right in your blood stream. Cordyceps species (there are many) are particularly abundant in tropical and semi-tropical Asia, but there are temperate species as well. The genus is on every continent, except probably Antarctica.
@@rifleshooterchannel208 it’s not crap and they didn’t “woke up.” I’m a Republican just like you, but I didn’t really care that they changed Sarah’s race, as I knew she would be killed very soon. When it came out, I was a kid watching my older brother play it. I saw Sarah and was like "oh I thought the girl on the cover looked different", and my brother knowingly agreed with me to keep the shock going. This week my brother and I sat down with our mom to watch this, and we got to do the same thing to her 😅 Funny how things come back around.

I'm so excited for the show, I've been waiting for this for the last seven years, and now it's finally here. Can we appreciate the first 1960's scene with the talk show and automatically recognizing Batiatus from Sparticus. I had to update this comment because I can't believe I didn't recognize the Swede from Hell on Weels (The taller scientist on the panel).
Yeah I was pumped about seeing John Hannah (Batiatus) and the other doctor Christopher Heyerdahl played Alastair in Supernatural and has been in a ton of genre stuff all the way back to "Are you afraid of the Dark" lol. The host I am not familiar with.. That was indeed a chilling opening scene I thought.
It twas a great pilot. Well done to the crew and very impressive and surprising performances across the board. HBO has another GEM on their hands. Tuning in for the entire season! Cheers.
First episode was a blast! I liked how the fungus created a picture of the US in the intro. Also how Joel, Sarah and Tommy don’t eat any yeast products (granny Adler does), something that may have caused the virus to spread
I loved every minute of this show. This was one of my favorite zombie stories of all time (only thing that comes close is TWD with Clementine and Lee in it) I think the changes they made are so subtle or fit the show perfectly. Like His PTSD flashback on the soldier was amazing. Small enough that it doesn't change the story at all but is a nice twist on what we all have seen 👍

Pleasantly surprised by the first episode. Strong cast, story moved along, didn't overly depend on zombies, interesting take on the cause, lots of story left to tell. Well done!
The young lady that plays Sara is amazing in that role; as a father of two daughters I had to fast forward through… well, you know. Pascal is such an left field choice for Joel but he’s absolutely perfect.

Theorytime: sarah was infected all along due to her frequent visits to her neighbors and exposure to the old lady but it manifested sooner in the old woman due to her feebleness. Also when trying to make sense of how her neighbors became infected, you can see sarah tremble when she ponders how frequently they possibly had to visit the hospital in order to catch it. This is reflected later in the episode when just after joel brutaly murders the gaurd arresting them and they find out ellie is already infected. For a split second before she reveals she is immune, he realizes no matter what he couldnt have saved her. Hinting the same fate was true for sarah.
Nah she didn't she nearly get infected though when The Adler offered her some cookies but it had raisin in it which she dislike so she didn't take it with her (not to mention Joel forgot to bought a cake)
I like that Ellie in TLOU2 says Joel watched the Viper 4 movie in theatre, and in the show Joel stands next to a poster for that very same movie. So many awesome details
I have never played the games before and knew nothing about them besides the main characters names and the clickers (well what they look like mainly) going into this, so watching this was a crazy experience and I loved every second of it. Actually I'm glad I went into this blind I feel it really enhanced the experience as opposed as to going in knowing most of the beats of the story. Anyway thanks for all the breakdowns and videos over the years, massive fan of the channel. Can't wait for the rest of the show.
The scene where Sarah is looking at the DVD and you can see the old woman blurred in the background with her mouth open gave me mad creeps. I can’t wait to watch the rest of the series!!!
I believe that the child that is killed at 18:19 is immune similar to Ellie. Ellie is later seen to test positive but she is not infected. Killing this child shows how quickly they'd disregard Ellie, and the hope she represents, if she was discovered.
There's one thing that I particularly liked about the scene where Sarah is in the watch shop. You see two police cars pass, which is fairly normal. You then see a firetruck pass, which is normal as well. I was expecting to see an ambulance next, but nope... It was SWAT.
Looking pretty great so far. Bummer about the probable lack of spores but that's a small thing. I just liked the extra danger of polluted spore filled air.
@@thomasrpokorny Nah, they did an interview about it and they pretty much just said it didn’t make much sense outside of gameplay. Their argument was that spores don’t stay in once place and that they travel, and that really everybody would be infected so they went back to the og tendril concept
I think this first episode shows that you can use the source material almost to the millimeter and still do something amazing that is it’s own thing. It’s the first episode and we should be cautious but this shows that other productions could’ve done the same and do great… (looking at you the witcher)
I really enjoyed this first episode. Felt faster on second viewing. Great cast imo, Pedro seems to fit the role really well. I hope it continues like this. I really like how it begins with Sarah waking upin bed to beautiful sunshine, which mirrors her next time (and her last time) waking up and the world is on fire and everyone is fucked. So well done that first 35. Also, the old lady is already changing when Sarah is in the house. You see her in the background with a wide open mouth and the dog is sitting in front of her definitely noticing she's not right/the same (I see others noticed this as well) Listening to this, the only thing I think I found somewhat odd is Joel not holding onto the wrench after dropping the old lady. Ofc he wouldn't know the full scope of things at that point, but he did know things were very bad and that people can attack etc. I hope the rest will be just as good and they greenlight another asap so they can begin doing it.
That poor boy that walks into 2023 Boston (trekking from who knows where and for how long) and collapses, only to be killed because he is infected. What if he was also immune like Ellie? How many possible immune people where put to death?
There likely weren't any documented cases of immunity before Ellie and wouldn't have any reason to assume the kid was something other than infected. That's why even the Fireflies locked Ellie up and didn't believe her at first.
I kept myself very very far away from news about this adaptation before watching it, so I totally missed most of the casting, and I laughed very much when I saw Anna Torv playing Tess while I'm actually bingewatching Fringe. More hilariously, they also share the setting since the series starts in Boston where Fringe main setting was.
ONE IMPORTANT thing When she asked "Are we gonna bake chocolate chip and said NO. Raisin cookies" Raisins actually raisin had a high contamination level by these fungi which are potential producers of ochratoxin
I think the coffee cup Joel is drinking from in the breakfast scene is similar to the mug he's sipping coffee from in the TLOU2 conversation with Ellie.
Yeah but the science says no. Spores stick to clothes not to mention a door would not stop spores. You'd have to wear a gas mask 24/7. No humans would be able to live outside.
They gave you an Easter egg when Joel pulls the cabinet away in 2023 - you see the dust through the sunshine resembling spores. They do this twice in the episode.
I agree. That’s the only thing I’m disappointed in. And when they reach the timeline of LOU2, there’s some crucial scenes that are based on the spores(one with Dina and the other with Nora).
I Played the TLOU on playstaion and knew about Sarah's death, but my God it still hurt like hell to wacth joel lose his daughter in a blink of an eye 😞 The day after his birthday too

I loved the opening episode … The best opening episode I've ever seen.
It was the little subtle things that caused the tension rise for the virus starting to begin, Like subtle coughs in the classroom & Grandma scene.
Can't wait for the next episode.
The kid twitching was an “oh shit” moment and the grandma was “ohhhhhhh shhhiiiittttttt”
I would love to see Joel in those 20 years that passed. How everything came to be. How Joel got he’s reputation. And Tess!
Always wanted that to be a dlc or something. Feels like a huge missed opportunity imo.
Should be a prequel the last of us would be so good if they explored the first few days to weeks of the apocalypse starting from the outbreak ending 3 weeks into it in the perspective of different characters of course
@@icrywhenisleep2130 Either a prequel or Last of us part 3 should have flashbacks of Joels and ellies past when the outbreak first started
@abirsharma82 nah I think a different set of characters is better to explore tlou was pure trash tlou is as far as the story goes
I mean that 20 years could be how they show the firefly uprising, tommy leaving joel for them, maybe he’s smuggled other people and lost them? Could be sick
I like how Ellie appreciated Joel defending her and his daughter was terrified by it. Shows how different they truly are..
Well Ellie has grown up in a harsh reality. Sarah knew her dad as her dad, and then had reality completely flipped on is head and she's watching her dad flip out and beat the shit out of people for the first time she has seen. For a kid that's a lot of change in a matter of minutes.
@@alexmoon1631 Yeah. It's like, how a kid views being taken care of, does a complete 180° in twenty years time.
That same yeast would have gotten Joel, and Sarah, but they ended up not making pancakes. They had eggs and bacon instead
@@wheezyproduct Pancakes don't have yeast.

*cries in Halo*
I like how they follow Joel's daughter throughout the episode as the main character, getting you invested and attached to this cute nice little girl, only to have her murdered. That was good writing.
They did an incredible job with making you feel connected to Sarah and Joel’s father-daughter relationship. In just one episode they managed to make you feel strong emotions when a character that we just met, dies. Outstanding acting from tommy, Joel and Sarah
I totally forgot she dies and it shocked me. I was so invested in her character 😂
I watched *that* scene probably a dozen times tonight. Some of the best, most heart-wrenching acting I’ve seen in a LONG time.
Honestly I really liked it. I don't mind the changes either. It's nice to see the story told in a different way. We'll still always have the games in the end anyways. But I am very impressed.
I agree except I think it sucks that there won't be any gas masks in it as I thought that concept was pretty cool

I think Ashley is going to play ellie's mom.

never played the games, but digging the show so far!
@@dodobean7620 Unless you just don't play video games you really should. Words can't describe what an amazing experience it was on every level.
So keep your fucking opinions to yourself please 😊

When it came out, I was a kid watching my older brother play it. Great first episode, loved every minute of it. OMG when grandma turned in the background, such a cool scene.
That was freaky as shit 😅
The planes and plane crashing was terrifying yet amazing

Nah she didn't she nearly get infected though when The Adler offered her some cookies but it had raisin in it which she dislike so she didn't take it with her (not to mention Joel forgot to bought a cake)
good theory but infected don’t spread spores when still alive
Gabriel Luna sounds exactly like Tommy it’s insane
I like that Ellie in TLOU2 says Joel watched the Viper 4 movie in theatre, and in the show Joel stands next to a poster for that very same movie. So many awesome details
Pedro’s Texan accent is spot on. My wife said he sounded like someone from back home, before she knew he was a Texan.
16:07 This young woman deserves an award for her acting! She was so good.
This was ace, thank you so much! Looking forward to following these breakdowns alongside the series.

There's one thing that I particularly liked about the scene where Sarah is in the watch shop. You see two police cars pass, which is fairly normal. You then see a firetruck pass, which is normal as well. I was expecting to see an ambulance next, but nope... It was SWAT.
Loved it!!! I was praying they didn’t mess this up and so far it’s great!!!
So far I love the subtle changes. Excited for the next one
Looking pretty great so far. Bummer about the probable lack of spores but that's a small thing. I just liked the extra danger of polluted spore filled air.
Agreed. Wondering if Pedro Pascal was like “don’t hide my face!”
@@thomasrpokorny Nah, they did an interview about it and they pretty much just said it didn’t make much sense outside of gameplay. Their argument was that spores don’t stay in once place and that they travel, and that really everybody would be infected so they went back to the og tendril concept
M8! So glad you're doing this show, played both games and very excited to see it fleshed out. Looking forward to your breakdown next week!

You see her in the background with a wide open mouth and the dog is sitting in front of her definitely noticing she's not right/the same (I see others noticed this as well)
Listening to this, the only thing I think I found somewhat odd is Joel not holding onto the wrench after dropping the old lady. Ofc he wouldn't know the full scope of things at that point, but he did know things were very bad and that people can attack etc. I hope the rest will be just as good and they greenlight another asap so they can begin doing it.
8:44 lol ya theory time voice is gold
That poor boy that walks into 2023 Boston (trekking from who knows where and for how long) and collapses, only to be killed because he is infected. What if he was also immune like Ellie? How many possible immune people where put to death?
so true! i never even thought about that
He didn't look healthy. He was also read as infected
@@charisma-hornum-fries So was Ellie.
There likely weren't any documented cases of immunity before Ellie and wouldn't have any reason to assume the kid was something other than infected. That's why even the Fireflies locked Ellie up and didn't believe her at first.

I think the coffee cup Joel is drinking from in the breakfast scene is similar to the mug he's sipping coffee from in the TLOU2 conversation with Ellie.
It really sucks they removed the Fungi Spores, thats really a big factor on how deadly outside the QCs are..
