Ciclovia Inside: i carbonai di Serra San Bruno

Il nostro viaggio alla scoperta dei tesori nascosti della Calabria ci porta oggi lungo la 𝐕𝐢𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐢 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢 nelle Serre calabresi dove, sulle montagne circostanti Serra San Bruno, ancora oggi è possibile assistere alla produzione del carbone ad opera dei “cravunàri”, antico mestiere risalente ai Fenici, tramandato di padre in figlio, che resiste al trascorrere del tempo nonostante l’immensa fatica che occorre affrontare per realizzare il prodotto finito.
Questo mestiere in via d’estinzione, che agli inizi del Novecento rappresentava una delle maggiori industrie forestali della regione e accoglieva intorno a sé lavoratori che provenivano anche da altre regioni, è un lavoro duro e meticoloso, sottoposto a intense turnazioni diurne e notturne per tenere sempre sotto controllo la carbonaia ed evitare che la legna si infiammi e vada perso il lavoro di mesi.

Our journey to discover the hidden treasures of the region takes us today along the 𝐕𝐢𝐚 𝐝𝐞𝐢 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐢 in the Calabrian Serre, where, in the mountains surrounding Serra San Bruno, it is still possible to witness the production of charcoal by the 'cravunàri', an ancient craft dating back to the Phoenicians, handed down from father to son, which has withstood the passage of time despite the immense effort that must be endured to make the finished product.
This dying trade, which at the beginning of the 20th century represented one of the largest forestry industries in the region and attracted workers who also came from other regions, is hard and meticulous work, subject to intense day and night shifts to keep the charcoal pile under control and prevent the wood from catching fire and the work of months being lost.
