Yes, all card purchases are done in cash at a convenience store. Transportation is the only reason you need to even exchange currency. Pretty much ever business accepts credit cards, so if they did the same with the transit system, there would be almost no reason to exchange any money.

I'm not sure, I use the subway app separately. It was useful when I lost internet signal.
