Primitive Trapping in Alaska "Marten Deadfall"

- I have always wanted to try these primitive ways of trapping. It took many different types of triggers to figure out which works best. Once I figured out the trigger mechanism, I started catching Marten.
If it does not work the first time and you keep losing bait, try something else. Make it better.
One thing I did not mention in this video is setting some Spruce Boughs over the bait on top of the top post above your bait stick. Help's keep the birds off your bait.

Alaska Trappers Association ran an article about how to make this trap in their March 2021 edition of the Alaska Trapper magazine. It's a good trap. Well done. Peace to you from Delta Junction. Postscript... I see now that your wife Sonia wrote the article. It was well written.
Thank you! I sent the photo in for pictures from the trap line and received a call about writing an article and a little bit about how I construct them. Thought that was pretty neat. Since my wife had written several children books she was very excited to write the article. She did need some pointers on trapper lingo though!! Lol

Наиме, извесни ловац Коља је по Сибиру ловио куне и тај човек је осмислио ову клопку, пре 300, можда и целих 400 година!!! Тамо је и данас актуелна, ловци кажу да је изузетно ефикасна, јефтина, изгради се за око 2 сата, траје годинама!!!
Бољу и ефикаснију ловци нису створили, кажу да нема потребе, а лично сматрам да немају идеју, односно да им је функција мозга у паду 😊 !!!

Good Video, enjoyed watching. I can see the benefit of this set that you don't need to carry it into the woods every year and secondly nobody is going to steal it. Make it once and use it a lifetime. Nice.

@@alaskahuntfishtrapadventures I didn't see it but I don't get that publication. Last year was the first year I actually got out and did some trapping in nearly 20 years. I used to trap long lines in the 70's through the year 1998, I started building a big home that year and well between depressed fur prices, high cost of gas and just getting older I never got back to it.
Really cool to see this old method to catch Martin also if you put this out about halfway around a really long trap line it could be an emergency shelter if you carry the tarp with you.
I like the shelter idea for sure!! Great safety tip. Always a good thing to be prepared in the bush.

This thing is great. Easy to build, natural resources and reusable.
It takes a bit of time but always nice being outdoors and it lasts a long time. Best part is u don’t have to carry the trap into the bush. Cuts down on transporting weight and gear
That is quite a dead fall :) I trapped for many tears and with a few older fellas & never seen anything like that, I'm just a little older and beat up so now I just cut wood and hold the fort down in winter and try to hit the road camping in the summer :)

You might want to check out the 4 part documentary Happy people they make a similar trap but have a different style trigger that might be a little quicker awsome trap

Also you might want to drill a hole in each piece of your trigger and tie a string to them so you can recover your trigger after the set has trapped a marten
Ok I like that. Funny u say that because I have lost a couple when the trap has triggered and the go down into the deep snow. Right on thanks for that goody.
I do believe that once you see the trigger system the Russians use that you'll probably like them better if I ever get to Alaska and get to trap I'm going to use them I think they will work better because the dead falls that you use a natural and so the martens won't be so hesitant to go into the trap just my opinion lol

Hello. I'm from Russia! We call this trap a "kulemka".This is a simple and lucrative way to catch martens, sables in Siberia.
I would advise not to make this trap on coniferous trees, as resin is released from the tree trunk and can stain the skin.
The film "Happy People" shows in detail the installation of this trap.
As far as I can see I have not had any problems with sap. Thanks so much for the heads up. I have been pretty successful with these builds.
I have often dreamed of getting lost in Siberia in a small cabin trapping and hunting and fishing for the rest of my life.

Over population control my friend. I am a lover of nature and support it where I can. Starvation and disease breaks out in over populated areas. Not good way for them beautiful critters to go.
As a life long trapper I have caught marten I a similar trap. Along with knowledge of the natural world, trapping is great for both metal and physical health. Maybe if the nay sayers actually talked to a trapper they would see how people lived for centuries with few mental and physical issues.
