My favorite analogy is the sled going down a hill. The more you sled down, the less you have to steer because your sled just dips into the grooves of your previous runs. The best way to create a new path to the bottom is putting down a fresh blanket of snow.

My tipp with any tutorial on youtube, take your own notes instead of rewatching the youtube video, writng things down, helps to create a recipie book, that you can access lster on. Also you bridge the brain to something you do with your hands. (enforces learning) Also you can modify the recipie later on, to see what works and what does not.

I think the term you're looking for is "neuro-plasticity".
That Disperser patch seems pretty similar to plucking a filter - just a different way of generating a resonance.

You're totally right! I tend to build my sound design and start focusing on the mixing aspect too early, before I complete the arrangement. I get swamped in analytical mode, while my creativity takes a backseat, and ideas I had to automate some sound parameters to further the track along go to the wayside.
I mentally associate music making with painting a picture, but I tend to focus on all the detailed colors before completing the outline.

Great stuff Dash like always. I've learnt so much from watching your videos. I've joined your patreon and am about to buy your new album.

👏🏻 Nice suggestions. Some of it is in line with the idea of breaking a song down to piano or guitar and voice/melody to see if it can stand in just that. I do agree this is a great way to judge how well a song will survive.

SOme wisdom from a great teacher I had - This might not make sense at first but, here goes: Not being creative isn't the problem. Creativity is the problem! We all are creative. We have ideas all the time. Its how we focus that creativity. Its how we organize our ideas. scizophreanics have amazing ideas and creativity - but they have no way of organizing those thoughts. How we use it and how we nurture our ideas is the key! A great composition instructor told me the best advice: Dont compose forward but rather UPWARD. Not horizontal but VERTICALLY. This applies not only to how we work with ideas and creativity but how we put entire projects together. Instead of thinking "creatively" i.e. coming up with ideas, etc, it is more important to be "constructive" - stay singularly focused on the major theme and idea and build on that single spark of an idea to complete a song or larger project like an entire album :)

I recently discovered that my problem with finishing tracks doesn't exist when I make DAWless music, because of the limit by the number of instruments I own. I try that in Ableton Live now. Just to use a limited amount of instruments.

Ever since one day when I thought of a physical band I thought maybe sometimes it would be fun to just limit myself to four parts. Now every once in a while I will make a song with four or five parts.

Love this kind of videos Dash. Everything you said is true. I have always found learning some sort of instrument does develop you better as a musician than always relying on a mouse.

this is why u need to have a template to start new projects with! Mine has very light one glove fits all mixing all in there groups with some light group mixing too. if the track doesnt sound good quickly i loose enthusiasm. i just got EQ highpass's and some light compression saturation nothing special! also got my synths loaded and ready. I start half mixed cos i will end up faffing when i should be writing and if it sounds good i will faff less. Once i got some ideas down i will do a mini mix just to balance a lil then keep going with the writing! Even have my master set up but just with everything off! its nice to be able to quickly check where in the ball park the track will sound like mastered (roughly) and again with a light one glove fits all set up

You definitely thought outside the box with the idea for this video and the brain training Dash 🤌🏻
Sidenote... I've been dabbling in music production for decades, and the one thing I never had back in the day was RUclips for tutorials, so every time I tried making a song in one of the many many genres I listen to I had to wing it, things never quite worked out right at all, but that's what's defined my sound years later, I still produce in everything from house, dnb to cinematic and some breaks, I still don't watch tutorials on how to make x genre, it's more how to do very specific things...
I wouldn't call any of it crossover as such, but I definitely have my sound.. And there's a few tracks which I don't even know what to categorise them in 🥴🤣
