Sorry Joe, this is the lesson where I first saw the socks. Disregard my other posts. I’ve since purchased a pair almost as cool as yours and I do believe my Sustain technique is improving. Not to mention my foot is warmer. Great video Joe, was a big help.
Many thanks, I have been researching "damper pedal symbol in music theory" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to learning piano fast minus the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my brother in law got amazing success with it.
Just wonderful, I have been researching "what is the middle pedal on the piano?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a smashing one off guide for discovering how to learning piano fast minus the hard work. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "what is the best piano pedal exercise center" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (search on google ) ? It is a good one of a kind product for discovering how to learning piano fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.
This is glorious, I've been looking for "what do the petals on a piano do?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Danilliam Illustrious Dominance - (just google it ) ? It is a smashing one of a kind product for discovering how to learning piano fast minus the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got cool success with it.
5 years later I am watching this video, I’ve been learning piano with extreme progress very fast due to my music playing on the guitar and understand the logic of how instruments work. But the pedal had stumped me a little and this video was all needed to understand the fundamental of the pedal. You’re the best!
Ok... I'm a beginner kinda intermediate pianist, and I have to say that your channel really helped me A LOT! I always was looking for a video that really shows me how to use the sustain pedal because I always did it wrong, but bro... Thanks a lot man, keep it up, I really love your videos and I really enjoy them watching and practicing with you, God bless you man, thanks you so much you don't know how this channel helped me xD, sorry for my bad English btw, I don't speak English very well, another thing is that I never comment in any video but man, I needed to do it for this one xD, thanks again and don't stop making videos bro! I love them!
Thanks so much for the kind words Robert. I have a big plan for this channel so make sure you stick around and check out all the other videos. Keep going, keep playing! :)
This is the best video I have seen on how to use the pedal. Other videos show you at normal speeds which is not helpful for beginners, they need to slow it down like he does in this video.
I first tried this exercise about 2 weeks ago and was terribly disappointed at myself for not being able to get that "UP-down" in sync with even one hand, to the point that I kept avoiding to give it another try ever since and focused instead on doing some extra reps on the more basic exercises. Now today I thought maybe it's time to finally try and push myself into the scary pedal territory again and guess what? All but nailed it on the first try! This is unbelievable. Thank you Joe!
When you started to say "and the error that my students do a lot" I thought "it will be my error, I bet" and it was the same ahah I was pressing the key and the pedal at the same time creating the gap, now I'll train like you teached! Thank you! :)
Beginner for the last 20 30 years, you have helped me more than lessons and other venues have. Thank You. One of My favorite songs is Nearer My God To Thee. Your Help would be appreciated.
Well ima practice on my dead or broken piano but it’s pretty fun doing this if you put your mindset in that way thank you for the help ima practice this whenever I play on the dead piano so I can show my skills whenever I go to my friends or cousins house to show my new learned skills lol but again thank you for the help
Relearning piano in my 60s after many years. Just reintroduced myself to the sustain. I don't remember having any issues with it as a kid, but you nailed it - gaps, and I couldn't figure out why. DUH! Thanks!
4:19 is the solid advice for me. the note might have been played just a little longer than what it should be, but holding down the key for just a tiny extra time helps a lot
I started taking lessons about 1974 with a great teacher. Then she moved. I've tried 2-3 more teachers but didn't practice enough until I broke a leg and had more practice time (on my baby grand) .Anyway my all time favorite group is Air Supply , mainly "The One that you love"
Wow glad I watched this video only a day after getting a pedal. I was guilty of pressing it down on the chord change, god knows how long that would've taken to correct if I had carried on that way. Taking a bit of getting used to, but on my last little practice session I noticed myself a few times actually naturally lifting it on the chord change without thinking about it, so I must be getting there.
Thanks very much for you introduction on the sustain pedal! I have watched half a dozen videos on the sustain pedal, but your video is the only one what really explained how to properly use the pedal, the reasoning behind it, and some excellent exercises to become more proficient with its use. Thank you again.
This is so great! Beginner here! Always understood the theory of how to sustain pedal, just couldn't get the coordination going! With this exercise I finally get it right! Gonna try applying it to Gnossienne no 1 now which I just learnt. Thanks so much!
I just subscribed, and gave a big thumbs up. I play the keyboard, and piano without using the sustain pedal. That's because I didn't really understand it. I ordered a sustain pedal for my keyboard, and am waiting for it to come in. I will be practicing what you showed in the video. I understand so much more about the sustain pedal now. Thanks. I've asked people, but they never gave an answer that I could understand.
Amazing videos and tutorials :-) M51 and blind and trying to teach myself how to play, started with a keyboard but I'm getting my first piano today :-) with all the videos I have checked on RUclips I have learned the most from you, you have been such an enormous help wouldn't know what to do without you :-) keep up the great teaching :-) tyvm :-)
Thats fantastic to hear Debra. When you say blind... are you totally blind? Its really nice to hear my videos are helping and if stevie wonder can do it... I wish you every success!
@@Creativepianoacademy yup completely blind, started when i was 27yrs old do to a rare eye disease and lost the rest 4 yrs ago.i have no musical training in the past at all. Losing my site left me with little i knew how to do,so listening to music was what i turned to. .ty i hope i can do it,gets pretty frustrateing but bound and determined to give it my all.shrugs, guess we will see.
I just bought a Roland DS88 and also bought a sustainer pedal. This has been the easiest lesson to understand in how to use the pedal! Thank you! And I subscribed. Love your channel!
The simple explanations, simple chords, simple progression, the pedal cam and common student errors.... make this one of the best videos on learning to use the pedal!
One month in learning music theory. Was getting annoyed on how to properly use the sustain pedal as I just held it down. This really helped me a lot, thanks!
Wow, u r a born teacher, thanks. I am raj from bangalore, India, 62y learning piano keyboard, I will buy a pedal and practice the way u taught. I appreciate your work and do like to learn more from you to play my favourite tunes.
What an awesome video. I love how you demonstrate exactly what it sounds like when you do it wrong, and how doing it right sounds so much better. Like all beginners, I'm still working on getting the pedal timing right, and this video is helping so much. The other awesome thing that I have to applaud is the fantastic little practice pieces you put together--they sound so good, and this one is especially great! If people overhear me, they don't think, "Oh, she's practicing her sustain pedal again." They think, "Wow, what's that super cool music she's playing?" The one problem I have that's not addressed in this video (maybe in another, I'll look) is that the pedal keeps slipping away from my foot. Grippy mats haven't helped. Using the pedal sideways has helped a good deal. You don't seem to have the slipping problem--I wonder why?
Thank you for the lesson! Just got a sustain pedal (cause, before I was playing with the keyboard's sustain button on and everything was awful) and this video helped me to learn how to use it correctly! :)
Playing with sustain pedal sounds a lot more impressive than simply using auto sustain, but more challenging as well. Thank you for the video, now I only need to get used to hand-foot coordination!
Thanks for this video 😭 I just realized that my chair is too high because for the longest I’ve been using my leg to sustain instead of my foot lol 😂 I sound so much better now thank you so much! 🙏🏾

only been playing a few months mainly my first love boogie woogie or in my case more like slow blues the way I play so never used the sustain pedal before, ive had a quick look through most of your vids and I like the way you teach, keeping people intrested and able to play something so they don't give up on the piano, ive known several people give up because after weeks of lessons they still not even playing anything so keep up the good work and I shall be gradually working through the vids one by one.
Good to hear Andy. Thats exactly what my vision was for this channel. A way to teach technique, the basics, how to play properly but in a fun and engaging way which gets you playing music you can enjoy and be proud of playing. Great share, you have a great teaching style. As a newbie, it was mind blowing to me why they call this the damper pedal when it mostly seemed to sustain. A very gud and helpful video for the beginners .... I basically learn so much about sustain pedal...... Love from india....
One of the prettiest piano songs I can think of is "Have a Little Faith in Me" by John Hiatt. That is one that I would love to learn.

So what if one section of the piano needs sustain (like left hand) but right hand needs the bounce for a fast paced, consistent lead rhythm?
This is so helpful thank you!

Thanks for sticking around Omar. Keep going and enjoying the journey!
Fabulous video and information 👌 the two songs I'd love to be able to play are 'I made it through the rain' by Barry Manilow and 'Just the way you are' by Billy Joel. Thank you
You're amazing bro !!
Thanks much for the excellent method, including the enjoyable "song" to go with it!
Can you explain the difference between a Sustain Pedal and an Expression Peddle for an electronic keyboard?
You made this quite easy to follow. Had helped me a lot. Thanks heaps:)
Quick question; What pedal is that? What’s it called, and would you recommend it personally? :-)
I’m trying to look for the right pedal to buy at the moment! Want to find something to go along with the Novation LaunchKey 61 MK3 keyboard, which I’m hopefully getting soon.
Currently I’m considering getting the Airturn ATFS-2 pedal (about $25), however I’m slightly worried about the cable maybe not being long enough - so I’d might have to get some sort of extension cable for it then, if I were to go with that one (if it’s even a thing lol)
Any tips or advice for a novice? Would be much appreciated 😅
thankyou
You're welcome.
This video thought me about the sustain pedal
Thank you so much, exactly what I've been looking for. I think I got what you mean by "anchoring the chord." Should the pedal always coordinate with the hand that plays Chords, not Melody? (also in your last example with both hands playing chords, you coordinated pedaling with the Right hand; what about coordinating pedal with the Left hand?)
I think with left hand but most of time it’s written on the piece
Good helpful video, thanks. I smile every time I hear you say (at about 8 mins 47) "and now I'm going to change to the effin C."
Just picked the DP-10 up to use with my Fantom X8 .. I don't hear continuous sustain.. Using HOLD jack on rear of Fantom .. any advice please ?
Song you should teach to play is “Gut feeling” by Ella Mai. Doesn’t sound difficult but for a beginner it would be cool.
I would love to learn a solo piano arrangement (no vocals) for the song: "Without You" by Harry Nilsson that captures the feeling of the record. Of course, the arrangement would have to be modified/tinkered with because on the record the piano is used to accompany the vocal. Same thing for "Bridge Over Troubled Water" by Simon and Garfunkel. Thanks for asking!!!!!!
Thank you Josef, I have only just found this thanks to your email.
Very good lesson. Thank you.
MASTER!!! Thank you very much :-)
great video.
Great Video. Question: what purpose does the switch on the sustain pedal serve?
this is very useful to me~
Very nice
