There is a raw and unique authenticity to Kyung Soo's music selections and delivery. You mentioned that the song should go longer; however, D.O always keeps the audience wanting more. Never too much ~ just right. As the "yesterday's you", I believe that this is indicative of the initial purity of affection that existed before his actions cause emotional injury to his lover. He took her for granted and the "innocence" of wholehearted love is now blemished. That is the root of his lover's change. Now, the "me of today" recognizes and regrets not cherishing the relationship when he had the chance. As to the simplicity of the instrumentals, the effect highlights D.O's incredible vocals and allows the lyrics room to breathe and tell the story. Just a thought...
I respect that interpretation of the music, and I really like the idea you took from the lyrics. The idea that his actions caused injury is not something I picked up on, but I believe you hit the nail on the head. Thank you!
“The you of yesterday and the me of today” is reminiscent of Verdi’s Don Carlos - when Carlos asks his former betrothed, now his stepmother, to call him by his name of yesterday - le nom d’autrefois. For me, this is the most poetic line in this song. A personal favorite.
Yes, dad is also very beautiful and the lyrics 😭❤️ It always makes me cry! I thought of recommending that one first actually, but I wanted something from the new album.
Thanks for your review. I also think the climax of this song need to be longer. The album overall is very chill and laid back (a great album by the way, mainly thanks to his vocals) and this song is probably the one that has the potential to stand out the most in terms of vocal and melody but it could do better. May be you can do a full album review as well, i'm curious which one you would pick as the title track.
The first time I heard it, there was no translation, but his vocals managed to convey the pain. So I guess the lack of musical accompaniments were meant to highlight the rawness/pain of emotions that he emotes from his voice. And after reading the lyrics, he has successfully done exactly that.
2:15 "there's a certain grit in his voice that I'm not used to hear it from him" I agree. When I first hear this song it hits me right away and I realize it's rare to hear Kyungsoo put this much pressure and emotion in his own songs 😩
His vocal register switching is insane!!!! That's our Kyungsoo!!!
