War thunder expert here, IT IS NOT A BUG. It penetrates the side of russian tanks and not off other nation's because every russian tank after the t-54 has 20-30 mm of armor on the lower part of the side armor(where the underbelly and the side armor starts).
it's a round that has a less sensible fuse than other HE round, allowing it to go wast small obstacles like fences. or tracks. or side armor.(it can go trough the less armored mbt's side armor and detonati inside). pro tip for sniping, take an apfsds as your secondary round, you can use your lazerangefinder to set your gun then switch to the apfsds which reset the time fuse and go back to HE again. have fun
ie used these rounds for quite some time and are just super fun to use, waaay better than heat, spaded those tanks with juts the he, hopefully it might get the change gaijin talked about some time ago where u can remove proxy and similar effects from your He shells if they could do it irl so you could remove the time fuze for this one and just go ham (hopefully)

*_EXPLANATION:_* M339 in game has a delayed fuse and is a SAP round, irl it's a multipurpose round that can be set to Point Detonate (PD) Point Detonate Delay (PDD) or Airburst (AB). Point Detonate Delay is used for blowing up things or people in bunkers, buildings, etc. It's able to pen up to 200mm of concrete and detonate behind it. It's like the anti-concrete round of KV-2. Luckily in game it's by default set to Point Detonate Delay which makes it fun and unique (unless you rangefind then it's Airburst) which is why it has 1.5m fuse delay and has so much more flat pen than angled because it's actually penning some armor before detonating. That's right it's the most powerful APHE in the game. The reason hitting lower on the tracks works so well is because it's literally penning through the tracks and some of the roadwheels before exploding at a lower angle than what would normally be possible with regular HE so it's exploding really close to the bottom hull armor which is obviously a lot thinner than the sides. The reason it gets classified as an HE shell is probably for the optional time fuse and the fact that it's fuse sensitivity is so low you can also laser rangefind with the machine gun to get the range without setting a fuse on the HE but you will have to readjust the range when switching back to your main gun
Quick tip for anyone who wants to do this. You can range find with the HE round and switch to a apfsds round (without shooting) and back again to get rid of the proxy fuse, this way you can use the round at range.
from whati can see in the first min or two of the video, i believe its because when you shoot lower track, the shell fuzes on the underside of the vehicle, which makes the HE go through the bottom of the tank and overpressures it. One may think why doesnt shooting under the tank work, and thats propably because its too far between the ground and the bottom hull plate, while if you shoot the track, it fuzes on in the area between the ground and the bottom plate. (closer to the bottom hull plate) Because the HE penetration works in a sphere, the further you are from a sphere the less penetration it has, so for example, if you have 60mm pen HE (from pure explosive effect, not delayed fuze/ solid penetration, unlike the HE in this vid which has delayed fuze) then on the same exact point where it exploded it has 60mm pen, but lets say 10cm outwards in a sphere it has lets say 50mm pen, 50cm outwards it has 40mm pen, 1m outwards it has 30mm pen, 2m outwards it has 20mm pen and like 10m outwards it has like 10mm pen, so if a plate of X thickness is within Y distance, it will be penetrated by explosive effect, therefore it overpressures the crew of the tank.
Because its just 20 mm of armor on every single russian mbt behind the roadwheels. It has an angle but it doesnt help againts this merkava shell. Its just overpressure
I think that because it is TF and not PF (or a regular HE) this round penetrates 65mm due to the projectile itself and not due to the explosive mass. That would explain why 4.77 kg of TNT has more penetration than the almost 15 kg of TNT in the Type 99 (the penetration of the Type 99 is based solely on its explosive mass). It would also explain how it does not explode upon immediate contact with the tracks and why its penetration value decreases with distance unlike other HEs. We could see this round more as a SAP (Sempi Armor-Piecing) similar to the Chi-Ha LG or the KV-2 than as a normal HE
Its because Russian T series tanks starting from T-64s gave only 20mm of side armor behind the road wheels. So the SAP round explosion is able to over-pressure it.
This 'M339' shell, dear Phly, is the Hatzav smart shell - a special Israeli shell designed to be versatile - it has 4 different modes: anti-personnel, that works similarly to a Flechette; anti-trench, that is programed to explode above the enemy's head; anti-helicopter, that works quite similarly to HE-VT shells, and is assisted by the lock-on-target system that all Merkavas got since the 1990's; and a SAPHE mode to work against armor. That last one is the only mode currently available in WT, though IRL the penatration is more like 120 mm, due to the fact that in expriments, it went right through the side of an upgraded Magach turret. It goes in - or stays partly outside - the enemy tank, then detonates and sends anyone there to 'a better place'. BTW, this bad boy shell has got a bigger brother named Kalanit, that has more penatration, more explosives and more smart options. Those shells are the terrorists' biggest fear (apart from being encountered with Israeli Saraph helicopters and their Spike NLOS Gen 6 missiles).
From how I understand that the show is not actually HE, it's a pseudo sap round because it has a fuse delay. The reason the penetration is so inconsistent is because the fuse way is relatively short, and Gaijin doesn't really understand physics.
It`s like the shell bypasses the tracks & related armor around, goes inside the tank then explodes. Epic. The 3.0 Churchill suffers from the same bug, any gun can blow you up by HE ing the track like you do.
One of my favorite RUclipsrs! So glad to have you back in action and hearing your in a better place with your demons you sound happier and healthier and that makes us all happy! Keep up the good work your doing us proud, best wishes to the family
It works because you're actually detonating on the lower hull, NOT the track. At certain angles the track sets off the HE fuse and it detonates before contacting the hull.
A few years ago me and my friend discovered that the soviet 122 HE could one shot the Jagdtiger by shooting the tracks at around a 30 degree angle from the front.
I was going to ask if outside comms like Discord or TeamSpeak would help with the obvious chaos, but then I realized that War Thunder is the antithesis of organized warfare.
i belive this isnt a bug, The shell has a 1,5m delay before it explodes which makes it come closer to those thing armor parts on the side or where ever they are, and then its just gaijin logic doing the rest
Doing some research on the actual round, the M339 is basically a pseudo SAP-HE-TF, meant to be able to knock through 200mm of concrete. The shell was developed to work in all NATO MBTs, but they're exclusive to the Merkava 3/4 in WT. There's actually a Reddit post talking about it.
Day 578: Phly, I challenge you to the conphusing aerial smokescreen challenge. Destroy three enemy aircrapht with smoke shells in a single game. Good luck. o7
I think when the shell explodes under the vehicle it works (pens the track). If the shell triggers on the track it doesn't work. So it prob has to do with penetration and angle.
Phly idk if you’ll see this, but it might be worth looking into the M8 Scott as well. I know in Enlisted that HE round was capable of knocking out tanks when it definitely shouldn’t have been able to. Just thought I’d throw it out there man. Great content as always brotha!
this isnt that weird cuz that shell is a multi purpose shell, it can pen armored concrete and other kinds of walls and emplacments so it makes sense it can pen the side of a tank
I find it's actually more effective if you shoot their wheels with it rather than the tracks, if you can see them ofc. Even at extreme angles it just one shots them in the wheels lol.
11:21 fused on the launcher but its blast range is not large enough to pen the extra topside armor on the M3A3 since it soars slightly past the launcher.
@@alexturnbackthearmy1907 yeah its just when it does happen ppl get pissed about germany and think its OP. Most of the time its user error hitting a bad pixel that eats your round.
I actually used this instead of HEAT to stock grind the Mk3D Merkava. It works best head-on to enemies, side aspect shots are a lot tougher to get the fuse to go properly and it mostly works on Russian tanks because the lower side is 20mm thin.
It works only on T series tanks because they have a very small weakspot all over the lower sides, i believe it's a 20mm plate angled but HE doesn't care too much about angles.
it works on russian tanks because even though the sides on t-72,80 and 90 have a side hull armor of 80mm, the lower area of the hull wraps under and is only 20mm thick
soviet mbts only die to the track shots because of the 20mm angled plates low on the sides. thats why they dont die if you shoot too high. this spot is quite a weakspot as it can be penned side on by many low pen autocannons: 20mm hvap & apds, 30mm aphe, 35mm apit "aphe", 37mm aphe, 40mm aphe and others, but explosive filler is required for most effective damage. you can replicate the trackshots with soviet HE and other big HE rounds. when i spaded my hungarian t72 i exclusively used HE, because why not. it was fun, highly recommend.
Hey Phly, you should try out one of the tanks with Spikes since they got "buffed". You no longer need to see 80% of the tank, but the tracking is terrible, they have like a 50% chance to miss, and the top down is very gimped. They should be able to strike at up to 70 degrees from the top, but they hit at more like 30 degrees which is usually cannon barrel, ERA, or APS.
