Man, I have watched this review so many times now. You really did a great job with it. I aspecially like your scientific segments, because they make the products and mods much more comparable. After comparing your sound test to the one from Jaeyou Park and nearLucid, I feel like the switches make the biggest difference: Compared to these lubed and filmed oil kings all other switches just sound a little scratchy. I am so tempted by this board every time I see it, and your osume sakura caps reminded me I've got their Dusk coming. I missed the Mode65 but this board in e-white + golden basically fills the aesthetic I would have chosen for the mode.
Great video! Honestly thinking this is what I've been looking for. The prices of many boards have just been too high for me to afford so this seems like it has the upmost attention to quality for the price.
Interesting. It’s very similar to how people are able to shape their drum sound. Basically, drummers like to add lil pieces of material (like a pillow in the bass drum, or gaff tape and toilet paper on snare drums), to reduce the acceleration of the vibrations for both the drumhead and shell. This enables them to control the more unflattering overtones that natural to all drums. Been noticing this lately since I got into the keyboard hobby.
The innovation here, as Scott/ @keybored outlined, is the manufacturing-- if they're successful with this one, I'd imagine they'll do a 75 and TKL next, using the same process. To that end, we should help spread the word to folks who want 65s so that it (deservedly) sells well.
Finally someone uses the right term, enthusiast entry level, not calling it cheap or budget, when membrane keyboards start at under 10 bucks and mechanical at 20. It takes a bit of enthusiasm to look at keycaps that cost more than most keyboards and think, "wow, what a good price!" We need to stop it with calling them cheap or budget when most keyboards are under 50 bucks, and only north of that are those that are enthusiastic about the subject or has too much money to bother thinking about being frugal.

Hey, reminder from guy working with audio. Rotate your speakers so they will be pointing at you. if you can, put them higher so the membranes will be aiming at your ears. The higher the frequencies, the more directional they become, and less dampening is needed to remove them, so you are basically loosing a lot of data.

I think its 150 because its gonna be mass produced and their margins is way lower but higher production of boards would drive costs down. They can make the difference with the multiple units sold overtime.

I hope keyboards will start coming in lightweight variants soon. Instead of using heavier metals, another effective option is to use less-ringy materials like plastic. A nice keyboard could weigh less than half as much. Lower profile would be nice too, for more comfortable lap typing.
Very interesting. It makes me think that the trend of filling up the case with foam or other soft material to clean up the sound was intuitively trying to isolate the primary air-borne sounds of the switches and keycaps, by muffling as much of the structure-borne resonant sounds as possible. But I think the custom community is starting to rediscover a principle that the vintage community have known for a while: that great sounding switches (Alps being perhaps the most prominent example) are actually enhanced by the very resonant cavernous design of vintage cases. I honestly don't think the MX switch design can ever fully benefit the same way as Alps-types from structure-borne resonance, but I do think that allowing bits of that structure-borne sound to accent the primary air-borne sounds can help produce pleasingly complex sound profiles, if controlled well.
Yup! Everyone just stuffing it with infill and all that was doing was reducing both the airborne and structure born sounds. So rather than shaping sound through design, people would just take foam and such and shove it in to just reduce "bad" sound. I think some of the grail keyboards are so good because they were designed right from the first place
@@Keybored Your past modding attempts on more budget boards sound great though! I think it's because you didn't go overboard with the foams and infills, and found some manner of sweet spot in each one for how much of the structure-borne sound to let through and accent the primary air-borne notes. I honestly think that's the more valuable way we can apply this kind of theoretical knowledge: in moving past the assumption that we should just muffle the sound of every board to lower the volume, and instead actually manipulate the right variables to get a more pleasingly complex sound. Most grail boards are already designed to sound great, but it's the ability to manipulate the sounds of less-than-ideal kits that I personally find is more impressive!

I really love your intros hahaha
Ah! Van Darkholme back at it again with HoT ToYs! Where can I buy this keyboard ?
This board sounds soooooooooo good! It's so good! The creaminess and thocc, oh man! Hoping to get one someday.
Great video! Keep em coming!
I wasn't expecting to go to class today, but here we are. How are my classmates? 🖐️
