it's interesting how manufacturing has changed and gotten better at making products where the core technology hasn't changed much, but the design/engineering of those products has gotten better. i have a 6500/8500 genset in my garage that i bought 10 years ago. it's the size of a large toolbox, was pretty cheap, and has worked well.

NICE unit. Big fan of vintage gensets (I've got about 20), especially Onans. They were top-shelf machines in their day. I've always wanted a DSP model Onan. They're hard to come by, although I did manage to get pick up a really nice 1949 W3S-531 Onan unit re-labeled as a Fairbanks-Morse genset many years ago. From what I've found, Montgomery Ward also re-labeled these. I'm also a generator tech., & love the old stuff. The oldest unit I can recall servicing was a 1958 CAT in Brooklyn, NY. I've gotta say I'm impressed by how dedicated you are to the hobby, bringing these big machines home! Mine are all smaller stuff - although I did entertain the thought of bringing home a 110 Series Detroit unit once. Love your channel! Keep it up! Sweet little engine. I am a retired truck driver. Many years ago I pulled a very old reffer trailer with a two cylinder Onan diesel in a Thermo King unit and a 40ft Fruehaff trailer. And it was very noisy. Ran like a top. Had to unhook from it to sleep. LOL. I have a Fairbanks Morris hot tube primitive diesel. A 1925 32 D twp cylinder. It has a GE Dynomo and ran a small towns electrical system and a few farms outside of the town. I have a 4cylinder 32 D that rand rice grist mill in Gillet Ar. There's another 32 D two cylinder south of Gillet Ar that I can have for free if i can move it. There's another one up the road from it sunk in the ground two feet.

I love the shut-off solenoid design! That’s so cool that it’s automatic and kicks in with oil pressure. Great combo device for low oil pressure protection as well.
It would be interesting from a geek point of view if we could see an oscilloscope pattern of the waveform on those old generators. Onan has a long history of producing gen sets that are said to have the purest wave form in the industry? For those of you that perhaps are not familiar with harmonics that can be superimposed on the wave form that can lead to heating problems in motors and in sensitive electronics for use with audio, it can lead to distortion. The list goes one but just the same, I wonder what the wave forms look like? Small hand held scopes are rather cheap nowadays. Hint Hint. Great video!
I was think the same thing. Lets see a scope. I heard some gens put out a sawtooth instead of a sine wave. My boiler(120vac) doesn't like a sawtooth and will not run off gen
@@franklynpolster8949 Probably the same thing with my 7.5 KW Generac generator. I have not looked at it with a scope but plan to purchase a cheap China scope to have a look at it. I am a ham radio operator and I use my generator whenever I am at camp. I can actually hear the garbage the gen head is making in my receiver. I have very large radio frequency filters on its output but it is still there because of the electronic regulation system it employs. I have no beef with the manufacturer as the gen-set is over 15 years old and has thousands of hours use on it and breakdowns have been manageable. No one seems to make an affordable low end gen set because the demand is not there. You may remember the modified sine wave inverters that were everywhere and seldom could you find a pure sine wave inverter at less than a kings ransom? Nowadays all that has changed because on off line or off grid systems where the customer was educated about the difference between the technologies which forced the manufactures to provide a better product at an affordable price. Don't hold your breath for that to happen to low end generators anytime soon.
These gen sets aren't inverter based, they are magneto-inductive just like the power that comes to your house. They are pure sine wave by their operation.

To do this, you need to connect a step down transformer to the generator's output, place a resistive divider at secondary winding output to get final 0.5 volts from transformer, and send this output voltage to computer's sound card input to record generator's output voltage waveform as a raw PCM file (Windows .WAV). And use your favorite wave editor to see recorded waveform.
Totally agree. My friend uses China-build gasoline generator 6 kW / 7 kVA (max) at 230 Vac / 50 Hz as backup unit for long power outages. This unit has output voltage THD at 33% (according to Fluke power quality meter)! Oscilloscope showed output voltage with nearly triangle shape. UPS unit doesn't accept this voltage. Fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts are flickering. 😎 We are trying to set up external double conversion system, based on APFC rectifier frontend (230 Vac -> 380 Vdc) + inverter (380 Vdc -> 230 Vac) to get a clean sinusoidal output voltage.

Nice video Mike, I just ran my Lister for five days during the past storm, seven hours from the end of the storm it started to smoke heavily. I found that the combustion chamber was full of carbon and the piston actually lost several of the ring landings. It never missed a beat and kept the ac and lights on. Sometimes these old tough engines can really make you wonder how they can continue to work so well when not in the best of shape. Good luck with your Onan, it looks to be a good one,
I have several older Onan 4kw RV generators as a “just-in-case”backup. Once I used an 1800rpm 4pole genset I despised using 3600rpm 2pole units. 3600rpm is just so annoying sounding. A 6pole 1350rpm or 8pole 900rpm unit would be cool! Gigantic, but cool. I even thought about making a single pole 7200rpm gen from a very small engine just for giggles. I’m into inverters lately, not as cool as a “real” generator, but the variable rpm function is handy for efficiency and simplicity.
That’s a cool set. I’d rather have one of these than a new set it’s obviously built much better than new ones that fall apart after a few hours of use. ✌️😁👍
Looks like a variant to the Citroen 2CV wheel; Although that one doesn't have an axle through hole. Mike, is there any info "out there" on the battery charging and dual purpose models? Interested in seeing how those types of setups would be implemented.

Onan made a similar unit in 240 volt configuration. I believe that unit was still in production during the 1980s. I worked on several over the years and know where one is hiding in a shed still.

It is fitting, even though coincidental, that Onan was used as the name for the company, as it originates from a Hebrew word meaning strong or vigorous.
That is a very large gen set for the amount it puts out. But a real great find and extremely well built it seems. When starting did I hear some rod slap or wrist pin slap? But then again I forgot initially it is a diesel so it may be just that. Great video and thanks for sharing.
While on lunch the other day, I stumbled across a really cool old generator on Craigslist, and it was fairly close to me. It was an old stationary unit, powered by a big Continental "Red Seal" V8. I can't remember what output it was rated for, but it was a decent size unit. It was configured to run on standard propane tanks. It had not been run for a number of years, but it did turn over without issue. The guy wanted $500 OBO for it. I was going to send you the link to it, Mike, to see what you thought, but by the time I came home from work, the listing was gone :'( I was very disappointed. Anyway, you should pick up a cheap can of barbeque spray paint. Good for high temps, and it will still look the same as the current paint that you have on the muffler.
A piece of farm equipment has that 3 lug bolt pattern,it's a long grain auger or conveyor as some call it,check with some farmers in your area,hope this helps and as always great video and content AND THE ACTUAL NAME OF THE AUGER IS LONG THATS THE COMPANY THAT MAKES IT
Place I worked had a similar Onan engine.that unit was used as a water pump.difference was that ours was the hand crank only.It had a decompression lever that was on a ratcheting setup,properly set the engine would have no compression when operator first started cranking.As cranking speed increased the decompression device would ratchet to full compression allowing engine to start.Engine was fairly easy to start,but like your manual said it needed clean fuel,or it was a bear to start.
Nice unit! Those rubber mounts on the control unit, were those from JW Winco? I've ordered from there. Expensive stuff, but the quality seems good. Also, I want to add that you're a great commentator. You provide lots of info in a concise manner
Good test and this is why I have 2 generators. A 5k Coleman for the well pump and a 2.5k Onan 1800 r's for coolers and such. Both are gasoline and the Comeman is a 10 horse Briggs. I just run the Coleman for water and the Onan steady. Nice diesel. Thanks!
A proper manual, that tells you how everything works, how to maintain the equipment and how to repair/rebuild as needed..... Unlike today's "quick start" manuals that give you a basic run down how to use the thing, and tell you not to drink the contents of the battery....... Also, damn... that engine never once sounds like it was really all that strained all the way up to beyond max! Impressive!
The Hevi-Duty model HS12F3AS transformer will give you the 120->240V step up that you want for your pump. On paper it's rated 3kVA. They're pricy new, but they pop up on eBay from time to time for a good price, I've seen them just over $200 on occasion.
Amazing output and stability for an old diesel unit. Maybe after the heavy load run the carbon build up will be reduced and the injector a little cleaner.

That 3 lug wheel looks like it could be off a 2 wheel vintage walk behind David Bradley tractor. They made 3 lug versions but later also used 5 lug wheels during stock depletion times. They had 15" rims and also 16" inch rims. You're probably in luck as most of the David Bradley s seemed to be located in the north and more specifically there are many vintage machines in Pennsylvania.
That babies got some grunt. I bet it could croak out 35 amps all night and barely complain. Those old gen sets had good copper in them, nice and beefy and not built down to a price point.
Sounding GREAT! Love the circuit breaker box on it too! Are you going t restore it or just used it as is. Mikey I have a question that has bothered me for years, maybe you can answer it. I got the question after Hurricane Katrina when I was thinking on how to quiet my backup generator. After the Hurricane a lot of people were having their generators stolen in the middle of the night. It got so bad people would chain them up and some would even take the wheels off them or both. Some thieves would even steal a lawnmower and run it next to the generator to give them time to get away with it before you realized it wasn't running and gone. Anyway some folks built hush boxes with fans etc, and put them around their generators to quiet them down and make them less detectable. So here's the real question, how come a car with more cubic inches and horse power is quieter with a car muffler than a small generator? You must own an Onan diesel. I have a 2 cylinder Onan diesel, very dependable. Run it for 1 week with no interruptions, Noisy! Nothing you can do to silence it so I just enjoyed the comfort it afforded me.

Hey Keith! In reality most of the noise produced by a generator set is not from the exhaust. It is mostly the "mechanical" engine noise and the cooling fan noise (both engine and gen end cooling). The rest is generally from the frame of the unit itself just vibrating. Especially when talking about modern portable gen sets, they typically run at 3600 RPM all the time. They are literally screaming along! Most car engines only hit those speeds under acceleration. Even then you have to remember that the cooling water jacket of a car engine absorbs a lot of that noise as does the sound insulation in the fire wall of the car. A little air cooled gen set has none of that.

Now that you mentioned the mechanical noises I do remember a video where a guy put insulated panels on the actual frame of the generator and it cut A LOT of noise out of it. First look would say 2cv but was using my dumper at the weekend and the rear steering wheels are 3 stud with similar dish. Dumper in question is an early winget but most use the same parts. Might be worth a look. Only thing I would say points to car are the buttons on the bulge of the rim that look like they are for a hub cap?
Neat old gen set. Is the bolt path during metric or standard? A lot of Renault's and Citron's from the fifties and sixties seventys used 3 bolt wheels.
*I have seen hockey pucks used as motor mounts for car engines. Perhaps cutting pucks into rounds or squares would provide appropriately firm mounts for your electrical box / control panel.*
Love those custom copper fuel lines. Very clean job.. They are deceiving to look at as some of those bends are not easy. Do you use anything special for bending your copper or just free hand? Thanks for your time!

Well may be. That fuel drain, from the pump may drain (siphon)all the fuel from the pump if sitting unused.

Three stud wheel was Renault between 50's and 60's, from my recollection. I had a friend who had one.
Little over full load and not a single hiccup. That thing is a little tank.

@@giggiddy I believe if you find a diesel-powered welder they still run at 1800 and you can convert those to more generator friendly set up.

It is fitting, even though coincidental, that Onan was used as the name for the company, as it originates from a Hebrew word meaning strong or vigorous.
That is a very large gen set for the amount it puts out. But a real great find and extremely well built it seems. When starting did I hear some rod slap or wrist pin slap? But then again I forgot initially it is a diesel so it may be just that. Great video and thanks for sharing.

While on lunch the other day, I stumbled across a really cool old generator on Craigslist, and it was fairly close to me. It was an old stationary unit, powered by a big Continental "Red Seal" V8. I can't remember what output it was rated for, but it was a decent size unit. It was configured to run on standard propane tanks. It had not been run for a number of years, but it did turn over without issue. The guy wanted $500 OBO for it. I was going to send you the link to it, Mike, to see what you thought, but by the time I came home from work, the listing was gone :'( I was very disappointed. Anyway, you should pick up a cheap can of barbeque spray paint. Good for high temps, and it will still look the same as the current paint that you have on the muffler.

A piece of farm equipment has that 3 lug bolt pattern,it's a long grain auger or conveyor as some call it,check with some farmers in your area,hope this helps and as always great video and content AND THE ACTUAL NAME OF THE AUGER IS LONG THATS THE COMPANY THAT MAKES IT

Place I worked had a similar Onan engine.that unit was used as a water pump.difference was that ours was the hand crank only.It had a decompression lever that was on a ratcheting setup,properly set the engine would have no compression when operator first started cranking.As cranking speed increased the decompression device would ratchet to full compression allowing engine to start.Engine was fairly easy to start,but like your manual said it needed clean fuel,or it was a bear to start.

Nice unit! Those rubber mounts on the control unit, were those from JW Winco? I've ordered from there. Expensive stuff, but the quality seems good.

I think the small space saver wheel is the right diameter to allow ease of access to the oil filter. Looks quirky. Adds character!
That 3 lug tire and wheel remind me of a Renault Dauphin wheel from the 50's If I recall- they had 3 lugs.
Good test and this is why I have 2 generators. A 5k Coleman for the well pump and a 2.5k Onan 1800 r's for coolers and such. Both are gasoline and the Comeman is a 10 horse Briggs. I just run the Coleman for water and the Onan steady. Nice diesel. Thanks!

A proper manual, that tells you how everything works, how to maintain the equipment and how to repair/rebuild as needed..... Unlike today's "quick start" manuals that give you a basic run down how to use the thing, and tell you not to drink the contents of the battery....... Also, damn... that engine never once sounds like it was really all that strained all the way up to beyond max! Impressive!

The Hevi-Duty model HS12F3AS transformer will give you the 120->240V step up that you want for your pump. On paper it's rated 3kVA. They're pricy new, but they pop up on eBay from time to time for a good price, I've seen them just over $200 on occasion.
Amazing output and stability for an old diesel unit. Maybe after the heavy load run the carbon build up will be reduced and the injector a little cleaner.
love this low speed genset. Wondering where you get your parts for older machines ? Trying to find a silencer for a 25 yo Kohler 20RZ, any ideas ?

I was just looking at project cars marketplace here in Canada ,I seen a 1951 Hillman minx, It has the same 3 bolt rims on it that you need!

That 3 lug wheel looks like it could be off a 2 wheel vintage walk behind David Bradley tractor. They made 3 lug versions but later also used 5 lug wheels during stock depletion times. They had 15" rims and also 16" inch rims. You're probably in luck as most of the David Bradley s seemed to be located in the north and more specifically there are many vintage machines in Pennsylvania.
That babies got some grunt. I bet it could croak out 35 amps all night and barely complain. Those old gen sets had good copper in them, nice and beefy and not built down to a price point.

Mikey I have a question that has bothered me for years, maybe you can answer it.
I got the question after Hurricane Katrina when I was thinking on how to quiet my backup generator. After the Hurricane a lot of people were having their generators stolen in the middle of the night. It got so bad people would chain them up and some would even take the wheels off them or both. Some thieves would even steal a lawnmower and run it next to the generator to give them time to get away with it before you realized it wasn't running and gone. Anyway some folks built hush boxes with fans etc, and put them around their generators to quiet them down and make them less detectable. So here's the real question, how come a car with more cubic inches and horse power is quieter with a car muffler than a small generator? You must own an Onan diesel. I have a 2 cylinder Onan diesel, very dependable. Run it for 1 week with no interruptions, Noisy! Nothing you can do to silence it so I just enjoyed the comfort it afforded me.
@@gregw8232 LOL that's a pretty good gen-set. Actually you can build a Hush House for it, it will quiet it down to almost nothing. In reality most of the noise produced by a generator set is not from the exhaust. It is mostly the "mechanical" engine noise and the cooling fan noise (both engine and gen end cooling). The rest is generally from the frame of the unit itself just vibrating.
Especially when talking about modern portable gen sets, they typically run at 3600 RPM all the time. They are literally screaming along! Most car engines only hit those speeds under acceleration. Even then you have to remember that the cooling water jacket of a car engine absorbs a lot of that noise as does the sound insulation in the fire wall of the car. A little air cooled gen set has none of that.
@@SmallEngineMechanic OH Hi Mikey, thanks for the reply. Makes perfect sense to me. I do think you're absolutely correct on the water jacket and mechanical noises. Now that you mentioned the mechanical noises I do remember a video where a guy put insulated panels on the actual frame of the generator and it cut A LOT of noise out of it. First look would say 2cv but was using my dumper at the weekend and the rear steering wheels are 3 stud with similar dish. Dumper in question is an early winget but most use the same parts. Might be worth a look. Only thing I would say points to car are the buttons on the bulge of the rim that look like they are for a hub cap?
The wheel looks like a spare wheel from a Citroen 2CV, called "Ente" (Duck) here in Germany.

Is the bolt path during metric or standard? A lot of Renault's and Citron's from the fifties and sixties seventys used 3 bolt wheels.
Sweet little unit. Looks like maybe a Citroen wheel? Have any specs on the wheel (tire size, etc?)

*I have seen hockey pucks used as motor mounts for car engines. Perhaps cutting pucks into rounds or squares would provide appropriately firm mounts for your electrical box / control panel.*
Love those custom copper fuel lines. Very clean job.. They are deceiving to look at as some of those bends are not easy. Do you use anything special for bending your copper or just free hand? Thanks for your time!
