Tiny HO Train Layout Build - 4x6 Model Railroad Part 2

- In the previous video we started construction on this compact HO scale layout and managed to get the basic track work complete. Here in part two the goal was to begin laying the foundation for all the scenery.
This meant building cardboard structures for all the mountains and buildings as well as designing a road which weaves its way through the centre of the layout.
Some testing was also done with a HO big boi to ensure the new scenery didn't mess with the track work. Impressibly the locomotive was able to run even on the inside circuit with tight turns and hills.
Clearance, Clarence. 😂 Wow, the Big Boy on that tight layout -- it has to be the quality trackwork, Harrison. When building the mountain in the corner, I thought you were creating a Swiss Alpine Ski Resort. Break out the mountain goats. 🐐🐐🐐🐐
Thanks for sharing. 👍🐾👍
What's your vector, Victor?
Roger, Roger, huh?
@crewleaderprods 😂
@@SMTMainline 😲😂😋

Adding powder brown Tempra paint to the plaster will save paint and look more realistic under the grass. Art supply stores sell Tempra, it's water based and is easy to use. The use of a NMRA track gauge will save a lot of grief later on, it's perfect for testing clearances through tunnels and next to buildings. Another way to test your track is to run the train in reverse with three or four cars being pushed this will test your turnouts and clearances. The "Big Boy" in model gauge works better then the real engine, the "Big Boy" was restricted where it could run because of its length!
You are packing a lot of operation into a very small space and it's starting to look good!
This layout is looking great and it’s amazing how the Big Boy is negotiating those tight curves with ease
Amazing that Big Boy made it over those curves, as strange as the jutting articulated truck looked! Fun series, can't wait for more updates!
Harrison very impressive, you make it simple for someone to learn how to build their first layout, fantastic and better foam is much better than dollar store foam board
Harrison, I think you have totally gone to the next level with this video. Presentation is spot on. Bravo amigo from Mexico.
That means a lot to hear!
Harrison. You are a master builder. Man, you make it look so easy. Getting the Big Boy to take those curves was some feat. Job well done.
Thank you!
@@SMTMainline You're very welcome!
Harrison,
The layout is really coming along nicely. Can't wait to see how it looks finished.
Nice to see the Big Boy run too.
Love the sound of those steel guitars and fiddles in the music track.
Today's county music hasn't had them since the Murder on Music Row!
Thanks. I believe most of the music is from the 90s and 2000s
Super construction and finessing the portals etal.. Nicely done and coming along just fine...! Kudos
Well done! Love it. Reminds me of when I ran a train under my tunnel portal and it snagged it, dragged it, then fell off the layout and broke. Ah, fun times. Layout looks really good. I’m sure you’ll have many orders for more once this one is finished.
We've all been there one time or another in the hobby, I hope it wasn't anything too important that broke though.
Awesome video i was surprised thag big boy took them curves
You and me both. Gotta give those Rivarossi designers credit, they did a good job with it.
Hello
Outstanding!
Really liked your tip of using the boxes that the portals came in as building foundations. When I would set up my trains on a board on top of my bed and run them, I’d use the boxes of the cars I bought separately as buildings while I ran the trains.
Your hill/mountain building technique with the cardboard strips seems strange to me, though I’ve seen that done before. The technique I saw a lot when I was young used wadded up newspaper, covered by wire mesh, topped by papier-mache strips. I never got around to building a layout, in part because it looked so messy.
I look forward to the next video of the next phase as you keep building it! The whiteness of the roads and the hills blended together on by phone. Whoops! lol
But I’m really looking forward to see how it finishes up.
Thanks for another great video!
I love it! The Big Boy is perfectly at home on a 4x6. 🙂👍🏻 Looking forward to the next installment.
It seems to run nicely on it.
Harrison....love the channel....your one of my favorites...great repair videos very inventive and clever.
Appreciate it!
Great Job Harrison! Looks awesome, very creative you are! Looking forward to seeing it finished! 👍👍
Truth IS often stranger than fiction, case in point, a big boy on a 15" radius 😮
I tend to agree, I've heard all kinds of claims repeated over the years and then are are dispelled in reality.
I'm amazed with how much you fit on a small layout. I like how you test things before moving forward. Nothing finishing a project just to start over.
A master at work Excellent job, sir.
If the Big Biy fits, EVERYTHING fits!
Nice job.
SMT. This is a masterpiece. As always well done
Quite a layout in a small space. Well done. 👍👍
Your knowledge work ethics and innovation along with vision is so awesome fine job greetings from upper northeast tennessee U.P. STEAM RULES
I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I'll keep working to make them better.
Absolutely love your layout building videos! So inspiring!
This will be very helpful because i am considering building an Ho layout and the only space i have to work with is my room. And still I can't thank you enough for picking me for the give away last year.
Glad it was helpful, best of luck!
Thanks for sharing this. I'm working with OO and it can be depressing when you find yourself limited to a small space. Layouts like yours show how you can make a small layout seem larger and more interesting by hiding the loop. I like it.
youve fit a lot in a small space without it looking silly, nice work
Thanks, that was the goal - I think the final version is a lot better than this too.
Awesome layout. I had one I built similar to your size a decade or so ago. I don’t have it anymore, but I’m planning to restart making one again sometime this year. One thing I learned that I would like to share is that do NOT rush to finish your layout/scenery; keep it always ‘under construction’.
Nice video man.
I could not build a layout like that ever at all
Also just watched part 1 - that will be one happy kid! Beautiful compact layout!
I never would have even gotten the idea of running a Big Boy on a layout this size, and it is amazing how it manages to navigate these tight curves!
BTW: THANK YOU for the videos!
A few us here in these USA under siege by oligarch criminals are rooting for Canada and all others!
Real Good Harrison! Your a master of the arts!
Amazing work SMT Mainline ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much!
@@SMTMainline You're welcome buddy
Great compact layout, Harrison👍🚂🇨🇦🙋
That’s a great layout when you can run the big boy without any problems 👍 nicely done 😀
It's working out just as it should....Can't wait until next time. Thanks SMT
Hi Harrison & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Harrison & Friends Randy
Thanks Randy!
It's a credit to your trackwork that the Big Boy runs fine on those curves. Great Job!
I love the Layouts you Build. Thanks for the amazing Video ❤
You need to get a Dremel tool to shape stuff Harrison! GR8 looking layout!
I have one again luckily.
Was anyone else shocked to see that big boy take the inside circuit?
I'm still amazed that actually worked.
@ so am I
Hi SMT Mainline love all the videos and I support the channel
Thank you!!
Looking good so far. What's impressive is big boy not derailing. Very cool vid. From Texas
Great video! Really enjoy watching these kinds of videos!
Love the layout build videos! Super relaxing and fun to learn some new techniques!
Glad to hear that. Part 3 is on the way.
Always a good day whenever SMT uploads.
I'm so glad you threw in that Airplane reference. Such a good movie!
Yeah, its classic!
I love these small layouts. It kind of reminds me of the little Micromachine playsets that would link together. THAT would be a feat. Modular layouts.
Thanks for all the help with my second childhood.
(I don't recall transitioning from the first.)
Great job Harrison tight curves still works. Awesome job well done video and share. Coming along quite nicely and works great. Have a great rest of your day and week
That is so cool! Very encouraging to see that Big Boy navigating the 15-inch radius loop. I am hoping to build an even smaller HO layout to run my little 0-4-0 steam switchers and dockside locomotives. I haven’t figured out yet what the smallest radius they could navigate might be. There will be flex track and experimentation involved. :-)
Good work, SMT! Yes, I'm surprised with the Big Boy too!
Looks great, Harrison! 😎
If you are looking for ways to disguise that large gap over the tracks in the back, I'd suggest making it look like a large ballasted deck bridge by hot gluing some deck girder bridge plates to the edge of the plywood.
You can get these bridge plates online or at a hobby store, or you can make your own.
Hope this helps!😉
Really enjoyed this segment of the series, thank you!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Your channel is so much fun to watch. Love it! You prove that you don't need the most expensive and fancy things to have fun with model trains. I mostly build European-inspired trains and landscapes, but the construction techniques are the same. Great ideas and the way a model train hobby should be, build, check and see what happens and just have fun! Greetings from the also cold North Sweden.
I appreciate hearing that. The next layout will be focused on budget and the goal is to build it for under $100.
Thanks Harrison for the video, nice progress. Can't wait to see the finish project, really nice one!
Me too! I'm excited to get some trains running.
Well done Mr Harrison with aloha
Thank you!
Fan Tabula's job harry nice work ! Excellent small layout looks great !
Thank you very much!
Looking fantastic!!!
I like how you're using the big boy to push its limits lol. Quite impressive layout Ford size I like it . It reminds me of how my layout was when it was running. One other thing of suggestion on something like a dead-end road or a track that's not going anywhere. An uncle of mine did it to his layout. Stick a mirror on the end of the track or road but hide it in such a way that you can't see it but it gives the illusion that the road continues on. He did it at the end of a track spur and it gave the illusion of the track continuing. He learned it I think from another model railroader in the 1990s when he was building his layout.
Awesome! I'm actually working with a 4x6 area myself at the moment
Impressive how much you can do with such a small space. Really interesting to watch your design. Thx!!
Thanks, stay tuned for part three!
Running the Big Boy was impressive.
Great, Some adjustments for Big boy to run on such tiny layout . Finish it, can´t wait to watch coming !
I’ve been waiting for this vid for so long, like maybe a week lol
It looks awesome with the scenery!
Awesome video and I have learn a lot from about working on trains and how to build a layout thanks Harrison
It's all about learning and having fun!
That is a very tidy sized layout. Great plan. Thanks you have inspired an idea for my new project. I will let you know how it works out 👍
I hope all goes well with the project. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Been waiting for this!
More is on the way
Excellent design for a small setup!
Thank you!
This is a fair bit bigger than my own HO layout but you have much more going on. I'm especially impressed by the number of rails - very neat work Sir.
I couldn't help but start laughing when I heard you say, We have Clearance Clarence, now I hear Rodger Rodger, what's our Vector Victor in my head lol
Haha, some of the best 80s movie humour I've seen.
That looks like a pretty good deal to me, a little bit of everything be a great box for some one new, just getting into the hobby, can't wait to see your layout in it new location. Keep up the grerat work
My train layout is event smaller 😂 its 4x5 😂😂😂 great video! 🤠
Very well done young man can't wait till you get it done
Thanks for watching, I'm excited to see how it turns out too.
I like how cool this is for a small space
I really enjoy your work, your creativity is amazing! Looking forward to the next videos on this project’s completion🚂
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the kind words!
Yay! Part 2!
Muy bonita te está quedando!

Awesome! Looking forward to the next installments
I'll keep you posted as it comes together.
FANTASTIC!!! Cant wait to see more!!

Thanks for sharing…nice to see paper mache still around…
Really good video keep making them :)
Awesome job on the layout, it is really coming together!!!!👍👍👍
Thank you so kindly Linda!
YAYYYYYY SECOND VIDEO!!!!!
Part 3 is on the way
Such a great hobby!🚂
love ur layouts u get of track in small places----- i want that mostly track and switches
Awesome railing, like this diorama train
Thank you very much!
Hi, Harrison! Really nice video and project! I love how is it going and the way you shaped the mountains. I've never hearded before such a way to make them, here in Italy almost everyone use styrofoam. Looking forward for the next part! Greetings from Italy. Carlo.
Thanks. Styrofoam has its benefits but cardboard works pretty well and is very affordable.
Nice video!
Yes! Episode 2!
Wow you are very talented thanks heaps for you clip
Thanks for watching!
Layout is looking very good I am happy to see that the big boy was able to make it 😂
Decoración de la maqueta HO.
Ahora falta que hagas una en escala N con 3 circuitos, 4 desvios, una espuela y vías al taller.
LOVE. THIS. Great work!
Glad you liked it!
great job Harrison
What I do for those tunnel portals is 3d print them, you can get away with making them what ever size you need(including oversized for tight turns) There are serveral models on thingiverse that are pretty good. just print it real thin first when sizing them
Amazing
I love you
🥰I like your build model railroad 🥰
Great video and charming layout design...Pretty neat that massive steam loco navigates so well!
Many thanks!
Nice update.
