So much easier now than when I was a teenager in the 80's. Back then, I bought a traffic signal and a walk/don't walk sign from a local industrial surplus place. Light was obviously incandescent PARs, and sign was all neon. There wasn't a readily available solution, so as a teenage nerd who was solidly into electronic design by then, I designed and built one from scratch. It had all the cycle timing in place to cycle the green traffic and solid walk, then start flashing the walk and switch to the amber traffic/solid don't walk and finally to the red. All of the cycle timing was completely adjustable as well. It was certainly a conversation piece...
I have a room full of traffic lights and walk / dont walk lights and school zone slow flashing lights and 12 inch lens and 8 inch size. And they all work like they are still on the streets with timers working them. My man cave.
I really loved your video on this particular traffic light. You do learn a lot when you're someone who needs to learn from. Not everyone noticed that the light fixture is made of plastic. Therefore you did not need to put the ground wire onto the housing of the light. The other thing I love about the video is knowing that each LED bulb is color coded so you know which wire goes where and then all the whites are white wires. Keep the good work up Traffic Light Doctor.
No sequencers for me! I built up a TS2 Type 1 cabinet years ago, complete with Iteris detection and ped buttons running in my basement. I have been watching your videos for some time, and it's always cool see you guys in the field doing the work. Keep it up! 👍
I love your channel. You annunciate well and explain things well. Please stop saying "go Ahead" so often. Go ahead and send me a traffic light. Thank you!
As an IT guy I can tell you a normal PC/Monitor power cable will also work and someone you know inevitably has a box with like 10 in there. The formal Spec for the US would be C13 to NEMA 5-15P C13 is the connector you plug into your PC/Monitor. Looks like a Rectangle with 2 adjacent corners angled. This is the side you would cut off for this project. NEMA 5-15P is a bog standard US 3 prong power plug. 15=Amps, P = Plug (R=Receptacle) So your Extension cord would officially be NEMA 5-15P to NEMA 5-15R. But my point is don't waste money buying a brand new one. Ask a few friends, ask the IT guys at work, or try your local Goodwill.
My high school calculus teacher had an old traffic signal head wired up in the classroom, but instead of a sequencing board each element was wired to a switch so you manually turned each element off and on (and could have multiple indications on at once). I thought it was the coolest thing! Hadn’t thought about that in a long time, and now makes me want to get my own signal head! Learned something new with this video that those sequence boards even exist (cool that such a device is available relatively inexpensively), so will have to invest in one if I ever do acquire my own signal head!
You obviously did not notice that this light is made of nothing but plastic. Therefore there is no reason for the ground wire. Metal traffic lights need the ground. Not the plastic ones.
Absolutely not obvious, I was here to say the same thing. He also needs to point out that "just these two wires" are live. Bare screws, wire showing... Mr Mancave wants to show his buddies his awesome wiring job, and 7-segment displays, and POOF!
I use that same board to build out lights. For the power, I drill a hole and put a strain relief on it. That way, you cannot pull the power cord out of the board. I also used plastic screws to secure the board to the signal head. Also, If the signal head is aluminum, I ground the case.
That is so cool, I didn't know they made all solid state boards like that for these! I have always wanted one, and finally have a place I could put one.
I had a few of these kinds of controllers. I even had a two way sequencer for my 4-way signal at one point. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my setup and I hope to get it working again with the brand new signals I got from an antique store a couple of years ago. They were surplus from a place in Ohio if I remember right.
l0l we had a traffic light in the lunchroom back in the 80s. if the talking in the lunchroom got loud, the light would turn from green to yellow. if it went red, we had 2 more times to keep it under yellow. if it got red 2 more times, silent lunch!! lol sometimes the "shhhhhh"'es would be loud enough to trigger a red! haha.. the teachers could make it less sensitive but they didn't so we'd have silent lunches a lot... :)
