The retaliating growth spell also gives the defensive master trait, so there is no need to put the target into defense mode, they go defense automatically even after attacking. Also try to not cause burning to units you froze, it cancels it out, removing the stun.

Also wet units stop being wet when attacked by burning attacks. When your primary dmg channel is shock I think it might not help.
