Maria Callas | She "revives" her house at 61 Patission Street (28th of October)
The Papaleonardo apartment building is located at the junction of 61 Patision (28th of October) and Skaramanga streets in Athens. It was built around 1925 with morphological influences of the European Art Nouveau style of that time in designs by the architect and professor of the National Technical University of Athens, Konstantinos Kitsikis. The apartment building has a total area of ​​1590 sq.m. and is considered one of the most important interwar buildings in Athens.
History
Maria Callas, a distinguished Greek speaker of world renown, was the building's most famous tenant; in 1937, after her parents separated, her mother took Maria and her sister, Hyacinthe, back to Athens, where they settled in her residence Patision street. She stayed there until 1945, when she left again for New York on September 14.
The building became the property of the Naval Disarmament Fund in 1950. During the ministry of Melina Merkouris in 1989, the Papaleonardo apartment building was classified as a preserved historical and architectural monument of recent times. A commemorative plaque was originally placed on the facade of the building, which was later removed, which read: "Maria Callas lived in this house. Ministry of Culture 1987". The apartment building was damaged by the earthquake of 1999 and was affected by a fire in 2003, however, despite the preparation of a relevant reconstruction study, its renovation by NAT was ultimately not carried out due to a lack of resources. On top of that, during the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century the building was used as an accommodation for the homeless and drug addicts, as a result of which it was sealed around 2008. From 2009 to 2013 it was occupied by a group of anti-authoritarians. In July 2017, the building came under the ownership of the National Social Security Agency (EFKA), through a contract with the Naval Defense Fund.
The restoration of the historic building, in which the leading Greek soprano Maria Kallas lived, in order to house the Academy of Lyric Art of the same name, was announced by the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis. For the project, which is undertaken by Anaplasi Athens S.A., it has been fully financed by European funds.
The Municipal Authority of Athens, having from the first moment embraced the vision of the president of the Academy of Lyric Art Maria Callas, Vassos Papantoniou, to house the Academy of Lyric Art Maria Callas, in the beautiful building at 61 Patision Street, is taking the first important step for the its restoration, announcing at the beginning of the year, through the company "Regeneration of Athens", the tender for the implementation of the project.
"It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, worthy of the best building in cities like Paris, London or Rome. This building - for too long abandoned to time and decay - evoked mixed feelings. Although associated with the glamor of Maria Callas, his image did not live up to what it should have been. Today, we are proceeding with its revitalization, with the aim of achieving its second glorious period", said the mayor of Athens, underlining that we would not have reached this point without the dream and passion of the soprano Vassos Papantoniou, who dreamed of an Academy of Lyrical Art in the emblematic building where Callas lived.
The tender of the project "Restoration of the Housing Building of the Maria Callas Academy of Lyric Art", with a budget of 6,869,600 euros, is financed by the Operational Program "TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE, ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT" with a percentage of public expenditure of 100% and according to the approved schedule will be completed in 24 months.
