Robin, lovely dreich weather to show off the wetness of Rannoch🌧😊 It was beautiful when the ☀ 🌈came out giving the views to the hills and brightened up the squelching👍 I will have to remember whiskey and podcasts for those long nights in the tent👍 I sort of love getting out in the middle of the night, especially when the sky is clear and you get to look at all those stars🌟 Always good to be out👍
Hey Gerry, I have to agree. As much as I'm too lazy to get out, I probably miss out on some amazing night scenes. If it's raining though, definitely a pee bottle. 😁
I did the walk from Rannoch Station to the back of the Kingshouse a year past April so the opposite way from you. A nice path at the start and end but as you say, a very boggy, approx 4 miles in between!! I did have a video up but God knows what I've done with my youtube hence joining Instagram! It was my wee sisters first (and maybe last) long walk as she never dressed fir it and nearly lost a trainer in the mud 😂😂. That was the hottest April on record too and scorching hot she was also badly burned and wouldn't put cream on as "she was fine" 😳. As fir the dried meals I've never used them as I usually take my own dehydrated stuff if need be as I'm coeliac but I was just saying to Spike, without sounding paranoid I don't fancy using the water like that either but then again if it's not often and doesn't taste bad, and in desperate times then I probably would if I had to 👍🏕
I wouldn't have minded doing the walk right through to Rannoch Station, that would be decent like. I hate seeing people burn but refuse sun cream. 😬 Once in a blue moon won't hurt but if you're using boil in the bags quite often then I'd avoid using the water..
@@WalkWithWallace aue she thought she was fine then the next day had a tad sore scalp, face and arms 😬. Aye its a good walk. Think it was just over 12 miles, I'd need to check my strava. I know if the weather closes in to just follow the electricity poles and you'll still get to Glencoe, maybe just not right at the back of the kingshouse.
Great vid Bud very informative the plastic bag stuff haha yeah the wee bottle...i only tryed weeing in a bottle once that was in the car heading into the Highlands from Cumbria stuck around Glasgow and couldnt find a layby... the result was a disaster i was so full by the time i stopped cars wizzing past all over the place no privacy the bottle wasn't big enough...i couldn't stop and I p***ed all over myself and the car seat haha nice start 😅
No way I'm leaving the tent in a hoollie for a pee, pee bottle all the way. Like you I like pasta, have you tried Knorr Pastaria, I really like all the varieties and they are excellent value.
I agree 💯%. Maybe a new line for Speedster Stoves, a pee bottle? 😁 I haven't mate, do you what it is, I'm a lazy git and like the fact you have a clean pot and no mess.
I use a tampon in my empty meal pouch, do the business and there's no liquid sloshing around. Can put the rest of my rubbish in it and carry away from camp nae bother. 👌 I've just bought a Flex Capacitor from Valley & Peak, did the usual YT research and watched your video on it....... Can't wait to get out and put it to use. The weight difference between that and my Osprey Atmos means I'll be able to carry at least another 4 beers! I love saving weight on kit.
@@WalkWithWallace My old man told me about the tampons in the late '70's, it's what he used when he was in the military if he was in an OP for a few days so that sniffer dogs wouldn't get on to a scent. If on a multi-day hike you can cut them in half, they are small & light. 👍👍👍
Good point on the bags Robin, if I remember right Army rations have plain foil bags with nothing apart from a date stamp on it. You could be right on the chemicals 🤔👍
Super video. Really enjoyed as I've never walked on Rannoch Moor but will be going the same way as you crossed it on the 2023 TGO Challenge. One pedantic point though. The Lake District is over 900 square miles, so would not fit in Rannoch's 50 square miles. The Lake District likely has less water though by the looks of your video 😀.
It's just like Rannoch Moor here in the Canary Islands... After 8 pints, two whiskey's and I stare at the sun long enough... Not raining though. Good stuff Robin. Good to see you back oot-n-boot 🤜🤛
Good spot finding that hut and some flat ground in the middle of that bog-fest. Had a similar camp in Eskdale on the Great Moss. The clue's in the name! 500ml Nalgene bottle for me Robin. Staggering around outside the tent in the wind and rain holds no attraction whatsoever. And if your feet are cold it makes a good hot water bottle for a while 😉 ATB
Definitely mate, and there was another 2-3 pitches to pick from too. Nalgene bottle is good shout, I've got one of them but it's for the dog's water on hot days. 😂
Lovely views. The leccie poles are always handy for navigating to Rannoch station. Oh and pishin in a bottle. I usually go out but I usually don't need to pee once I'm in the tent. Trouble is I don't usually have a spare bottle...
I thought the track continued all the way, otherwise I would brought the trekking poles. 😬 If you can go all night without peeing then that's a result. Rare for me these days.
Enjoyed that Robin. Really liking the look of the Paramo stuff, reckon the next jacket could be one. Fancying the Velez or the smock version for winter. Rannoch moor is a beautiful place, driven through but the train journey is superb. TFS David 👍
Cheers David. I had the Velez smock for years and it was brilliant, my only complaint was the front was a little short for my liking, the Alta jacket gives you much more protection being longer. I love driving over Rannoch Moor in a proper winter, like the arctic.
Great video Robin, cracking editing 👌 Rannoch Moor is a bogfest alright 😨 but a great escape for some sanity ⛺ as for the pee debate... its a wide neck bottle everytime but in the vestibule area not in the sleeping bag in case of overflow 😜 atb Brian 👍
HydraPak 1 liter Stash (slash) bottle with a 63mm lid Collapses out of the way to carry I clip it on the outside of my pack, no one knows what it is. Disinfect it when I get home. A vital piece of kit for a night’s sleep! Been using it for years.
Great camp Robin, it's a bit like Rannoch Moor up here in the Lakes at the moment! Lol! Rather than drink the hot water, if it's winter time you could use it for a hot water bottle. I'm a pee bottle man myself!😁👍👍
Great effort Robin from both of you heading out into the wilderness of Rannoch Moor in these soggy conditions during our current "monsoon" season!👍. Enjoyed your Rannoch Moor factoids, especially the banana one. See you joined Stripey wearing a stripey hat too! ATB Derek
Cracking video Robin. Rannoch Moor certainly is a stunning, beautiful and very desolate place. Thanks for sharing your adventure as always. Great to see you our with Stripey again.
@@WalkWithWallace I thinks its just the vastness of it that makes it more intriguing if anything else. You just stand on the edge looking over it thinking......."I wonder what can possibly be out there"? Haha
OMG! I love the Gossipmongers podcast! I blitzed every episode earlier in the year (often while driving to and from hikes). Honestly, there were times I was laughing so hard I had to pull over and stop driving. Regarding wild camp peeing, I tend to need to go a few times in the night (often totalling over a litre a night), so if I were up and out of the tent each time a) in cold weather I'd never get warm b) I'd never get any sleep c) it'd just be a pain in the arse ...so I pee into a Nalgene 48oz/1.5L canteen pouch. It has a wide neck, it's lightweight, packs up small, and is easy to clean afterwards.
It's brilliant isn't it. 😁 Got a couple of favourites already, like the W*nkhouse in the village, the Centurions and the window cleaner peeing in the bucket. 😂 I've found myself having to empty out a pee bottle during the night, I can't bring myself to pour it out in the vestibule though, so end up opening the door and pouring it out at arms length. 💦
Smashing video Robin. My 2cents worth on the nocturnal toilet trips is that I always carry a collapsible wide-open bottle with me. And if its too wet or too cold outside I will use the bottle, but only in the vestibule area, and carefully too. If its mild and dry, I'll go outside. But better to have all the food and drinks done by 8pm if possible to reduce risk of toilet trips. Regards, Wadirunner.
Fair play to the both of you going out in that crappy looking weather 👍 Regarding the pee in the tent issue, i just started recently using my empty dehydrated meal pouch. Recently when i was out i was lying in my sleeping bag thinking i really don't wanna go outside for a pee and i got me thinking what have i got to pee in. Hey presto, one empty pouch meal bag done the trick 💦💦💦
That's a good shout mate, I usually use the pouch to bring all my rubbish home to put in the bin. You'd need to leave it outside the tent just in case it leaked.
Great little trip, thanks. At my advancing age a pee bottle for me is a must, otherwise I may as well sleep fully dressed... Nalgene collapsable for me. Also plastic bags for putting over dry socks if I do go out and put boots on. I take a plastic mug and use that for porridge and soups, 65g is not too much for me and a silicone top keeps it warm.
Great video again buddy. Got to love a bit of “Boggy Mc bog face” Looks very much like the Cambrian Bog of Wales. A pee bottle in the wintertime is a must! I use a Oasis bottle it’s got quite a big top. Unfortunately from experience I would not recommend actually peeing in the main part of the tent, if it goes wrong it’s a smelly mess you don’t really want sort out in the middle of the night 😂 Nice to see the Scarp still going strong 💪 ATB Lee
Great video I enjoyed as I think it’s an amazing moor we have the Migneint moors in snowdonia which although smaller than Rannoch moor is something I will walk across one day when ground is frozen. I use camp slippers they are waterproof light and strong bought from ultralight outdoors. I enjoy going outside in night as long as it’s not raining as if your lucky as I have been so many times you have fantastic Views of stars without light interference. But combination of both may be practical cheers
Thanks Andrew. Must admit I got up for a pee during the night on Arran and discovered a cloud inversion underneath me, so it does have its bonuses going out. Not in autumn/winter though. 😂
@@WalkWithWallace absolutely , safest way to cook is cast iron and stainless steel. stainless steel being the lightest. Research everything! Fire retardant tents too!!
I never eat dehydrated meals in the plastic bag. Always decant em into the pot. Even if the plastic is BPA free, there are still endocrine disrupting chemicals in plastic. General rule of thumb is to never have plastic in contact with any food or drink as heat accelerates leaching. That includes 'paper' cups coated with plastic 'wax'.
Cheers Euan, I've took all the attachments off so I haven't used the crossover poles yet. My thinking is take them if snow is forecasted and or winds in excess of 30mph.
Great vid Robin. Oasis bottles are good for a pee during the night. But always sanitise your hands afterwards. How are you finding the Scarp for warmth?
Peeing in the tent is absolutely disgusting. Inevitably some will get on your gear. Yuk. There are good points to getting out of the tent to go - seeing the night sky, possibly spotting wildlife, getting a good stretch, warming up the sore muscles before settling down again for an even deeper sleep. On another note - how do you stay dry in all that damp and drizzle? And how to stay warm over multiple days of wet weather? Do you use a down sleeping bag and jacket?
You've got a point, it's well worth getting up for a pee in summer or in good weather. I remember waking up to a cloud inversion on Arran. 😁 I use a down sleeping bag and jacket, and carry dry base layers to wear in the tent in dry sacks, put damp clothing away in a dry bag in the tent so they don't cause condensation and dampness in your tent.
I did a double-take at 12:23 after all the talk about pee bottles! 😅 I think it's a good idea, but I'd be worried that it might overflow. Anyway, moving quickly on... I have an idea about the people who crossed Rannoch Moor directly. They disappeared into the bog and were never seen again. You are brave camping in these conditions. It's a lovely walk though. I walked to Lochan Meall a' Phuill and back last Feb during a birthday stay at the Kingshouse. We took my sister's two dogs. They are city dogs and were quite freaked out by some of the local fauna - goats, deer, hairy coos etc.
😂 😂 Reminds me of Patches O' Houlihan in Dodgeball. I think you're probably right about people disappearing into the bog. Just checked the map to see where you went, that was a plan a for us, to camp a bit higher but didn't want to be stuck in a cloud.
@@WalkWithWallace if it's good enough for CT it's more than for me lol I'm a right animal though lol 😆 I never smell it and I've done plenty very close to where I sleep 😆 🤣
Great vid as always. Not sure if the Foil Bags are safer. I try to avoid all types of plastic bags and opt for silicone collapsible containers if its something that cant be wrapped in foil.
@@WalkWithWallace Absolutely there will be, sheep, hikers, Neolithic man, Redcoats… there will be plenty in there. For years now I’ve used a wide neck Nalgene bottle for nocturnal urinations and it’s perfect. It’s got a large skull and crossbones sticker on it so it could never be confused for anything else. Packing up is definitely the worst part of camping.
Rannoch Moor bogs are like the pennines on steroids, definitely an area I'd personally avoid in Winter 🙄😆. The pee at night debate... I rarely need one during the 'wee hours' < did you see what I did there? 🤔😆. I just get out the tent BUT I know plenty of folk that use a bottle OR EVEN roll over and pee in the porch, no footprint of course 😏. I can see the benefit of the pee bottle. I wouldn't say it's lazy it makes sense depending time of year and locality
Winter is probably best for Rannoch Moor if there's a decent hard frost which sadly seems to be rare. I like a pun 😜 Must admit though I'm not keen on the thought of peeing in the vestibule.
I've walked along that path - in 1974... Remind me not to work out how long ago it was - I was only 10 at the time! When I've needed to pee in a tent, I've just lifted the zip a bit, slid across and stuck it out, so to speak... 'Trouble with using the same bottle as you had the whisky in is that you could wake up later and think you still had some whisky - though I suppose as long as its' your own, you'll come to no harm... Any advances on Oasis bottles??
Was there powerlines in 1974? Stripey said that was pretty much his technique too for dealing with the nature calls too. Oasis bottle or a collapsible Nalgene bottle seems to be the way forward.
@@WalkWithWallace Was there even power in 1974?? I think there were actually - the three wires on wooden poles type. I'd have though size and shape might have a bearing on the other issue...! Hahaha.
Pee bottle 100%. Why would you want to get out of your tent. Especially if cold and raining. Collapsible nalgene. Quite expensive for a pre bottle but very practical. Also take bread bags if for any reason I do need to get out my tent but have clean dry socks on and need to put wet boots back on.
Totally agree, when I've forgot to bring a pee bottle, I hate having to get out of the tent, nothing worse. Unless it's the middle of summer and it's warm. I've got a couple of options to look into now for pee bottles now since the vid went out. 😁
Thanks Kerry, the Tarptent Scarp 1 is my go to tent for weekends away but for a multi day hike I'd probably revert back to my Tarptent Notch as its a lighter and more compact in my pack.

Once in a blue moon won't hurt but if you're using boil in the bags quite often then I'd avoid using the water..

All good until you mix up the bottles :)
Ha, I shouldn't admit to this but I've done that once before. 😝

I haven't mate, do you what it is, I'm a lazy git and like the fact you have a clean pot and no mess.
That's a unique idea I've never heard of before. Makes sense.
The Flex Capacitor is a cracking pack, love mine. 4 beers is a lot of night peeing. 💦 😂
@@WalkWithWallace My old man told me about the tampons in the late '70's, it's what he used when he was in the military if he was in an OP for a few days so that sniffer dogs wouldn't get on to a scent. If on a multi-day hike you can cut them in half, they are small & light. 👍👍👍
Wonderful trip and a great video. Enjoyed it very much. Have a great day.

Good point on the bags Robin, if I remember right Army rations have plain foil bags with nothing apart from a date stamp on it. You could be right on the chemicals 🤔👍
I'd feel quite safe drinking the water from a proper army ration pack. I'm sure our soldiers do too. 😁
Cheers David and good luck on your TGOC. I applied in 2017 but pulled out with back issues. May apply again. I'll need to check my figures again. 😳
It's just like Rannoch Moor here in the Canary Islands... After 8 pints, two whiskey's and I stare at the sun long enough... Not raining though. Good stuff Robin. Good to see you back oot-n-boot 🤜🤛
Cheers Jim, enjoy the holiday mate and I'm going to watch your version to see where you ended up on Rannoch Moor. 😁 👍🏻
@@WalkWithWallace You'll not be using it for a while them Robin 🤣🤣

Pity they can't put them in silver foil packs like the army rations.

Cheers David. I had the Velez smock for years and it was brilliant, my only complaint was the front was a little short for my liking, the Alta jacket gives you much more protection being longer. I love driving over Rannoch Moor in a proper winter, like the arctic.

Cheers Dave, I've always been fascinated by Rannoch Moor even before the days of hill walking. 😁 Was good catching up with SHG too. 👍🏻
Regarding wild camp peeing, I tend to need to go a few times in the night (often totalling over a litre a night), so if I were up and out of the tent each time
a) in cold weather I'd never get warm
b) I'd never get any sleep
c) it'd just be a pain in the arse
...so I pee into a Nalgene 48oz/1.5L canteen pouch. It has a wide neck, it's lightweight, packs up small, and is easy to clean afterwards.
It's brilliant isn't it. 😁 Got a couple of favourites already, like the W*nkhouse in the village, the Centurions and the window cleaner peeing in the bucket. 😂
I've found myself having to empty out a pee bottle during the night, I can't bring myself to pour it out in the vestibule though, so end up opening the door and pouring it out at arms length.
Cheers mucker.
The 8pm rule is a good one, I live by that in the house for a peaceful sleep throughout. 😁 👍🏻
Fair play to the both of you going out in that crappy looking weather 👍
Regarding the pee in the tent issue, i just started recently using my empty dehydrated meal pouch.
Cheers Bob, and some good tips and the second shout for the collapsible Nalgene bottle. 💦
Great video again buddy. Got to love a bit of “Boggy Mc bog face” Looks very much like the Cambrian Bog of Wales.
A pee bottle in the wintertime is a must! I use a Oasis bottle it’s got quite a big top. Unfortunately from experience I would not recommend actually peeing in the main part of the tent, if it goes wrong it’s a smelly mess you don’t really want sort out in the middle of the night 😂
Nice to see the Scarp still going strong 💪

Definitely a pee bottle! The only boil-in-the-bag food l use is rice and l don’t make tea with the water. Rannoch Moor is magic!
The general consensus seems to agree with using a pee bottle. 😁
Rannoch Moor certainly has appeal.

@@WalkWithWallace Your welcome Robin...
Pee bottles only an option for 50% of you! 😂 so it's boots on and outside for me!

Pee is sterile apparently. 😜
The Scarp is spot on, I kept the vents shut this time and got very little in the way of drafts. 🏕

Pee is sterile
I use a down sleeping bag and jacket, and carry dry base layers to wear in the tent in dry sacks, put damp clothing away in a dry bag in the tent so they don't cause condensation and dampness in your tent.
Pee bottle every time 👍 another example of dual-usage gear, use it to carry the booze in, then use it for extracting the p**s afterwards 😂🤣🤣
Haha, pretty much on the nose mate. 🍻💦 😂
What did people even eat back then? That places looks so vast and empty
Small settlements would grow crops and have some cattle & sheep.
No way going out and not carrying extra stuff. I just go out door or in unused area of porch. It soaks into ground.
Haha, fair play. I don't like the thought of peeing near the tent. 💦 ⛺

Great vid as always. Not sure if the Foil Bags are safer. I try to avoid all types of plastic bags and opt for silicone collapsible containers if its something that cant be wrapped in foil.
If anyone did try your walk in a straight line, they’re probably still preserved in the bog Robin.
I've often wondered if there's bodies that haven't been discovered on Rannoch Moor. Could he centuries old or missing walkers. 🤔
@@WalkWithWallace Absolutely there will be, sheep, hikers, Neolithic man, Redcoats… there will be plenty in there.

Hahaha.
