Emu at Christmas (1984) - FULL EPISODE

- If you're looking for a Christmas special featuring Rod Hull, Emu, and Grotbags, chances are this is the one. I get a lot of messages asking for particular episodes from the series, but this one is far and away the most sought after - and now we can all enjoy it again, with a huge debt of gratitude to Jayne for providing the recording. Thank you, Jayne!
Anyway, Rod and Emu are having a miserable time of it down at the Pink Windmill. The kids have gone away on holiday, the heating's bust, the decorations are less than stellar, and an unfortunate incident involving a Christmas pudding just about tops it all off. Just as things can't get any worse, Grotbags decides she's going to serve up roast emu to the Magnificent Fred... Meanwhile, the cast of Boggle's Kingdom look to capitalise on a brief opportunity to escape from their time bubble.
This particular festive special (and there was more than one, despite anything I've previously asserted) was first broadcast on Christmas Day in 1984 and repeated on Boxing Day 1986. The songs sung are Celebration (by Kool and the Gang), We Need a Little Christmas (from the musical Mame), Goin' Places (by The Jacksons), Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Ralph Blane/Hugh Martin), and Duke Ellington's It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing). Judging by this musical extravaganza, they should have got Susan Maughan and Carl Wayne - Princess Hortensia and Odd Job John - to sing more often. They really add a classy extra dimension.
In the continuity of the whole series, I think this is the first time Croc and Redford ever met. Until earlier this year, Grotbags's one and only henchman had been Croc - but the character was written out for the live series out and replaced by Robot Redford (played by the same actor, Freddie Stevens). This special seems to mark the debut of David Tate, who would play Croc for the next four series - but the sharp-eared among you may notice that he's still being voiced here by Freddie. Also, (mini-spoiler alert) I think this is the only time the inhabitants of Boggle's Kingdom meet up with the rest of the cast outside of their bubble.
The Pink Windmill Kids in this episode are:
Joe Greco
Hugh Harper
Anthony Hosier
Catrina Hylton-Hull
Sarah Jeffs
Lorraine Plummer
Spencer Roberts
Kelly Rossiter
Abbie Shilling
Emma Whitlock
Those of you taking notes may have picked up on the fact that that's the same line-up as the 1984 series of Emu's All Live Pink Windmill Show, with the exception of Kelly coming in for Debbie Harper. Funnily enough, Debbie would return for the next two series, but this special is the last time Hugh, Anthony, Catrina, Lorraine, and Sarah would feature as part of the gang. Speaking of eras ending, I also believe that this was the final episode to be shot a Central's Broad Street, Birmingham studios. (Though I think they returned there for some of the songs later on.)
One last thing: I hate to spoil the magic, but who in the world is working Emu around the 29-minute mark? Did they really stuff one of the kids into a sack?
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)
35:16 them dabbing was a true highlight
It’s that time again, the very last episode of Catrina

Feels like this was just yesterday- so many great memories ! I remember I really wanted to be a pink windmill dancer when I was little !
You're not the only one - believe me, you are *so* not the only one! :-)

I used to go as green as Grotbags whenever I watched this as a kid. Green with envy as I so longed to be one of the Pink Windmill kids!!!!!!
You are _so_ not the only one! :-)
Petition to replace every red-and-green-colour-scheme Christmas movie on Hallmark with this gem who's with me
loved him as a kid he was a big part of my child hood i did cry when i found out he died rod we love you x and miss you x even gratbags x
I think this might be my favourite episode ever!! The vibes are just perfect from the songs to the scenes to the characters! I'm loving it so Much!!!
It’s Christmas time again and as always, I’m watching two of my favorite Christmas specials :) this one and Emus World at Christmas ❤
That look on Rod's face when he finally meets his ancestor was absolutely priceless. Definitely the main highlight of the entire Emu's World franchise for me that is.
The Holy Grail!!!
Thanks for this episode. I thought this one might be lost... Well done for all your work and thanks to the provider. Ho Ho Ho !!
You're most welcome. :-) So many people seem to have such great memories of this one - I was just *certain* a copy had to be out there somewhere!
Eddie Munster 3/^&!!Thyu
That log scene was hilarious 😂
This brings back memories of xmas day at my grandparents house in 1984. I was 7 years old as well
same here haha! Man I miss the 80s
It’s March and I still love watching this...love it, albeit rather sad for obvious reasons 😔
I'm glad to have found this on here. I haven't seen it since it was on TV back in '86. I had it on video but lost it.
+Thomas Slattery You're not the only one to say exactly that - loads of people had fond memories of the Christmas special, but it didn't half take some finding!
+VideotapeFTW Thank you for uploading this and all the other programmes. Been watching them all over again. Loved it! Brings back my childhood! 😊
+Thomas Slattery You're very welcome! Bringing back childhood memories is precisely my mission. :-)
Thank you for sharing.. Freddie stevens was my uncle.. Sadly he has passed away... We miss him greatly xx ❤️
Oh, you're very welcome, and I'm sorry for your loss. Your uncle was a big part of more childhoods than I suspect even he realised, and I wrote about him in the description of this video here: ruclips.net/video/0BgtNxxuMFY/видео.html
Is no one gonna talk about how Debbie was missing this amazing holiday special?
We still don't know why she missed out, either - especially as she was back for the next two series. Kelly did well in her place, though.
@@VideotapeFTW I agree Kelly did super well I’m glad she was there!
Bye catrina:(
I`ll be back
this is the only episode where you see emu wearing clothing i noticed ! i fully enjoyed this thanks
Good spot - that's definitely a rarity. Oh, and you're welcome! :-)
Actually there is the Emu's World episode where he was dressed as superman but they couldn't find the cape
+The Deej Reviews Stuff You're absolutely right - good thinking! Spotters' Badge for you.
ODD JOB JOHN YOU PEASANT! :D
Loved Boggle's Kingdom. There ought to have been a spin-off series.
Goodbye catrina, Hugh, Anthony, Sarah and Lorraine

Hi there, I have been looking for a while and have found an old tape of 'Emu At Easter' 1984. Great fun to watch it again.
Always good to come across fellow fans of the show! I've just sent you a private message to ruclips.net/user/inbox - please let me know what you think. :-)
R.I.P. Rod, Carol and Freddie
Also R.I.P. Carl Wayne
32:31 Tellin em to square up like 😂😂😂😂
Arlenne Perez 😂😂😂
Wow, Grotbags wearing her prettiest wig! La-di-da!
Abbie is the youngest out of the gang and she knew what she was doing to stop the fight at Christmas! 3 cheers for Abbie!
Agreed
“they call it jazz, what it has...”
80s Christmas was so much better don’t get tv like this anymore 🎅🏻👍
So enjoyin this this has to be one of th ebest one's i've ever seen Grotbagas had obviously missed walloping croc the poor thing, i always never understood with redford and why he didn't get walloped!b this collaborations was amazing thanks so much!
And thus the wonderful friendship between Redford and Croc was born! The funny thing is that Croc just reappeared in the next series without explanation. He must have been sacked by the Magnificent Fred, but why go back to all those wallops? Not the wisest career move...
Its funny when they fight and Emma is so funny
P.s Me and my brother Jake rose whatch it till the end plus we are goona watch it at night b/c its chrictmas today :D
Any photos of this being recorded anywhere ?, lenton lane where this was filmed is now part of the University of nottingham, only 1 studio there now...... same feelings i would get if i was walking through those premises now as to those when i walked around the old ATV/CENTRAL studio site a few months ago....
Whatever happened to the actors that played croc, and the robot ???
I've seen publicity shots in the studio and a few location photos, but never anything of the show actually being made. I'd love to see some.
As for the actors, I'm afraid Freddie Stevens (who played Robot Redford) sadly passed away in 2016. David Tate is still working in theatre, and has been known to post comments on some of these videos, I'm pleased to say.
Its Christmas roday and mlim watching this in christmas
Loved the Pink Windmill as a child, I was only 11 back then and the only Christmas gift that I was ever able to get excited about. Can we not get the Pink Windbill on boxset?, would mean so much to people of my generation I am sure.
Thankyou dor thumbs up ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡
I’ve probably watched this special too many times to count, because it’s my all time favorite! I even watch it when it’s not the holiday season, because everyone looks their best :)
I watched it _loads_ of times back then, borderline obsessively. Absolute classic.
@@VideotapeFTW honestly, I’m watching it borderline obsessively now, lol. Definitely a classic
@@willows-and-reeds There was a time when I could probably have recited every line of dialogue _and_ known every single dance step!
@@VideotapeFTW aha, I’m in that stage now, AND I remember what everyone wore in each of their appearances. I have a talent, a wonderful thing. ;)
@@willows-and-reeds Well, you'll one step ahead of me if you can actually sing, because that's definitely not my talent. Not that I ever let that stop me, of course!
Id love to know where all the Pink Windmill kids are now?
You can easily spot them. They walk around wearing t-shirts with their names on the front. Their wedding photos all look a bit strange, mind.
@@tdannemaria They're all in their 50s
i loved them
best xmas pressie ever!!!!!!!!!!!! thhhaaaaaaaaaaaaanksxxxx
You're very welcome! And credit to Jayne, of course, for lending me the tape. :-)

@Claire Edgar It's a documentary just waiting to happen, isn't it? :-)

Greatest world Cross-over ever!
amagin that the macnifecent frade eated grottbags
Welcome back Kelly
I’m confused... Rod Hull plays both himself and King Boggle at the same time?
Yep. It's very well done, isn't it? The Magnificent Fred and Robot Redford are the same actor as well (Freddie Stevens), who also provides the voice for Croc in this one.
@@VideotapeFTW wow thats very intresting
This episode wasn't broadcasted live so that's possible
33:05 Abbie really be saying facts
Is the song Rod Hull sings at around 35:00 an actual song, if so what's the name?
It's "The Old Soft Shoe" (or "That Old Soft Shoe", or "Give Me the Old Soft Shoe - something like that): ruclips.net/video/DPraPAxVc0c/видео.html
VideotapeFTW thank you!
do u know anything about what happens to spencer
Spencer's absolutely fine, and I 100% guarantee you haven't heard the last of him (he said cryptically). :-)
Do you know what episode it is where Grotbags has a meeting at her castle with lots of different witches?
Sounds like you could be thinking of the Easter special:
ruclips.net/video/JaeHV3kZOh8/видео.html
That's the only one I can think of with lots of witches.
VideotapeFTW Thanks so much. That's the one. X
Happy xmas eve all!
I have already seen Emu At Christmas and Emu's World Christmas Special, I have the dvd of those 2 shows
Where did you get the DVDs from? They've never had an official release.
@@VideotapeFTW I managed to track them down from ITV
@@garethstephenlankshear9379 Would you be able to share them, whether publicly or privately? They must be better quality than VHS.
Can you possibly set up on here put on RUclips, I would like to see it 😊
Rod (steps out of the flour bins and strokes emu)
I’m Rod. I’m Odd job John Baxter (all right fella)
And I’m the princess Hortensia (oh your ladyship)
And I’m good King boggle
(Holy crap, grandad?)
Who was stuffed inside that sack playing Emu?
It's a good question! Logically, you'd expect it to be Abbie, but I _think_ you can just see her burst through the door at 32:15. Maybe Kelly?
VideotapeFTW It’s probably Emma. (I think)
VideotapeFTW I think it’s Emma too, she wasn’t seen in the part when all the kids came into the windmill. Additionally, at around 29:45-29:47, you can see someone with blond hair inside the sack.
Dude there's no way that kelly can fit in that sack 😃
Olay
29:02 i want to know who was inside that lol, it has to be a child or maybe even abby lol
Haha - I haven't managed to get to the bottom of it, but as the Kids storm in at 32:14, you can just make out Abbie - so my money's on it being Kelly. Could be wrong.
Was this repeated on boxing day 85 or 86?
Definitely 1986.
30:44 scared the shit outta me
Hey, where's Emma?
Between Joe and Hugh at 0:23 - it's Debbie who's inexplicably missing from this one!
Oh yeah, I meant Debbie. Why is she missing?
No-one's sure - after all, she returned for the next two series. It could be down child labour laws (i.e. she'd reached her limit for working hours for the year), or maybe she just wasn't available. I'd love to know, too!
15:16 she put the egg shell on the bowl she was using to cook....
Yeah - I thought it was a joke at first, but then she puts the next one in the other bowl. 99% certain it's a mistake they left in.
Probably last episode for catrina Hugh Lorraine anthony Sarah
im obviously very late, but is this Kelly's first show?
No, she was in the 1983 Christmas special as well - ruclips.net/video/vYtCfVQoScA/видео.html - and then the series that followed (Emu's World series 5). She missed the first live series, but was reintroduced for this 1984 special, and stayed until the end.
32:13 time for da mayham to Start the mayham
If they actually stuffed one of the kids in the sack there, it could of been Abbie, she's small enough to fit in there along with Emu possibly
Kelly's the prime suspect - you can _just_ see Abbie behind Croc as the Kids burst in at 32:14. :-)
@@VideotapeFTW that's also a possibility
33:02 is this Abbie or Michelle vom Full House? 😅 😂🤣😂
Why wasn’t Debbie in this?
No-one seems to know - she came back for the next two series, but missed this special for reasons nobody remembers. I'd love to know, too!
Could be child labour laws in that she may have run out of hours for the year. I understand this happened to other kids in previous series. Alternatively she could have been poorly or had family commitments at the time of filming.
Where’s Katrina?
Left middle at 0:23, singing solo at 4:41, and putting on the record at 34:13.
32:13 when sailor moon fights a youma
😊
Grotte bags just got #Roasted
11:46
Why is kelly here
Short answer: Because Debbie isn't. No-one seems to know why Debbie wasn't in this, though.
30:38
Abbie is cute
That green lady looks like schreck
12:41 here's princess Fiona lol
