I have to say you are by far the most detailed leather worker on youtube, you do beautiful work and you explain things so well and on top of all that you have a voice I could listen to all day. By the way is that a stanley folding knife 10-049 I see on your work table? It seems as if you have a different blade in it. I have been looking for a knife like that, do you mind telling me where you got yours?
i always find it best to fold with a dampened crease, glue and sew the welt in dry, then wet mold and form the knife into the leather after the glue has had a chance to cure for 12-24 hrs. then sand trim and burnish--edge coat and seal. many ways to skin a cat they say... always good to watch people do things different and have great results...
I learnt to make these from your videos and actually sold enough of them here in Sweden to pay for all my gear and leather I bought. Thanx this man! Really good videos!
You have a fantastic knack for teaching. Not just because you covered the entire process but how you presented it and explained the reasons for each step and and pointed out steps in which you need to be thinking ahead to further steps. Really have a great in-depth overview of the entire process. Very very well done!
I am in the process of buying tools and leather, etc, so I don't have the extra funds right now. But since you are the main (not only, but main) source of my sheath making, I will absolutely donate at some point soon. Thank you, I have learned a lot from you. Your vids are by far the most comprehensive and easy to understand that I have found online.
That was one long assed video.....and I loved every second of it. You sir, are an artist!!! You just have to love British craftsmanship at it's finest. Thank you for an awesome video Ian, top marks!!!
I'm new to leather craft and have started practicing with all types of scrap leather before I bought some veg tan leather. I will practice a bit more before my first project with the veg tan leather.
One thing that you do VERY well is explain order of creation. This is often hard for a beginner to understand - and something I get out of order now and again. Well done!!!
I grew up working with leather in saddles and harness for horses, and I got pretty good at it, but nothing like the work you did on this video. I subscribed. You taught me a few things and I might just take up leather work as a hobby once more. Thanks/.
Thanks for posting, about to try my first shath in this particular style, and was dreading punching the stitching holes, totally agre a drill press for such thick leather is fine
I enjoyed watching and learning from your video. I didn't think I would be able to watch the whole video, due to the length, but you captured my interest and I watched to it's entirety. Thank you for taking the time to show each detail. Now I believe I could make my own sheath with confidence that I haven't missed any steps.
I am sewing my first, and quite basic, knife sheath as I watch this and taking notes of everything I didn't do right... Fantastic work Ian. Thank you for the great instruction.
ohh love those fallknivens' own custom F1's soo much, imo the most beautiful buscraft knife ever! and the leather sheath is a masterpiece that fits perfectly with the f1
Hello Ian, I too have awful hand cramps. I think mine is from lack of circulation because of my diabetes. I have noticed that cold (not ice water) takes the cramps away extremely fast. Thank You for sharing your skill.
Damn Ian, great video. Thank you very much. I was going to leave my comment at that but that was before I read the previous comment. Please allow me a moment to counter that bloke. Once I was fly fishing a great little salmon creek on the Kenai Peninsula when a big Mr. Brown took a keen interest in me and my backpack. I made a tactical retreat and left my pack to his devices. After he lost interest and I stopped shaking enough to walk, I made my way back to the remnants of my pack. Aside from a ripped tent, eaten food, and a broken stove my trusty Bic lighter didn't survive the encounter. That night I used my hiking boot laces to construct a bow drill to get my fire started. I sure wish that I had a fire steel on my sheath to "impress my city friends." Oh, well. Chodes will be chodes. Keep up the great videos.
Hi do you think you could show us how to do the quick release strap please I am having a little trouble understanding how it works, by the way please keep up the vids you do a grand job of the explanation and I am just getting into leatherworking. All the best, Bob from Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Absolutely outstanding. The mastery displayed here is mesmerizing and the finished product is a beautiful work of art. Fine artisan craftsmanship such as this is a rarity in this disposable age, and this was a joy to watch. I hope you do many more of such videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill.
This is absolutely 100% completely entirely BEAUTIFUL! You are an artist! Would you consider custom making a sheath for money? I would pay anything just name a price!
Cramps are from pinching the material tightly between your fingers and thumb with a flat thumb grip, I used to get the same cramps all the time (I play too many video games) To alleviate: try to avoid having to seize your hand muscles in one position for long periods, if you feel yourself gripping hard, try to find an alternative. Grip with your finger and thumb tip, in more of a "C" grip (more natural position for muscles) don't know how much that will help but thanks for the great video cheers
I would make one side flat, for a better sit on the belt.. this way you done it, its not flat on flat. its Round on flat = not so sticky. Very awesome Video at all. got a like :)
@RDPproject Hi Rob, Line 20 and Line 24 are snaps sold by Tandy (Line 20 is also the same as 'baby dot' and line 24 is the same as 'durable dot' as sold by the Dot company who actually make them I think). Line 20 is the normal sort of snap, line 24 is heavier duty. The thread in the video is pre-waxed nylon thread not sinew, 1227-038 in the Tandy catalogue
Great video!! I wish you had shown the retention strap being made and fixed to the sheath because that’s where I’m having trouble lol. Don’t worry about the length of the video so much. It could be two hours and we would still watch lol. You’re so thorough that it seems a shame that you would leave something out. I enjoy all of your videos and they help soooo much! Thank you for sharing your incredible talent! You make the best videos and I’m going to start donating. I feel as if I owe you so much for helping me learn how to make leather goods for myself and my family.
I'm one of those who wants to try this on my first attempt working with hide, I've made loads of bits and bobs with the banished scraps of old furniture leather, but I'm going for it all the same. If mine turns out half as good as this one, I'll be delighted. Yours is absolutely brilliant and I love all the great tips included in the video, I'll start when I've had my tea too. Although, with mine, I want a D ring at the top and a hooped strap so I have the choice to hang it from my belt too, I'm from Roundhay so I'm bound to be awkward lol
@ridinmabike Rivets are stronger I think! I don't like sewing across different heights of leather because you end up exposing the stitching where runs up to the higher piece on both sides and there's no easy way of protecting that. Plus with straps there's potential for a lot of twisting motion on them as they're put on belts or slid round belts which would further wear that stitching. Overall I'm just happier with a couple of nice strong rivets!
While most dyes nowadays don't require waiting until dry traditionally (when oil dyes were used) you wouldn't get a complete penetration of the dye (it would look spotty). I didn't intend to answer any questions, but having been taught by my grandfather I did want to compliment Ian's work. It looks great!
Great Vid, I picked up a few good tips. I use magnesium for muscle cramps. You may want to soak your hands in Epson salt aswell, and use clamps. Thanks, B.K.
wonderfull videos and detailed DIY, many ppl just make comercial clipps of their sheats and then sell them. But you show how its done....thanks to youre videos I have placed my first order of tools and leather :D if I fail in making nice sheats now its probably bacause Im just no good at it and never will be :P
What a great video. In Yorkshire we like pies. You forgot to mention the Henderson's relish. Really fancy having a go at some leather work after watching this.
Also, it would be awesome if you could do a full length video like this one on how to make a sheath similar to a hedgehog leather works sheath! I’m trying to make a sheath for a large knife that I’m going to give to my son who is a disabled veteran. I want to attach an altoids can on the front as well. Thank you again for you terrific videos. Cheers mate and happy trails
I just wanted to say thanks for the vids you post, they're very inspiring to me. If the economy wasn't so bad and I had the cash I'd absolutely donate something your way just for you're dedication and the pride you have for your art. Sorry I can't though, I'm trying to save up to start making custom knives again and am gonna try my hand at sheath design too. Who knows maybe one day we could collaborate on a piece and do and online auction, people on here would have a field day in the bidding.lol
Hi Ian. Just sat and watched this very informative Video. Wow ! It's great to see someone actually take the time and go through every aspect of their work. And Superb work it is too :) You've inspired me to look further into Leather work and you've instantly told people what to look out for when buying Materials, Nothing worse than being put off by using inferior quality materials. From one Ian to another Ian, Thankyou...
Great job, I have learned plenty watching your videos. You explain everything very well and do excellent work!! Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to make these videos!
Ian, you use a cord at the hilt that pops open the clasp. What type of cord is that, diameter and material. Thanks! Learned a great deal from you and continue to do so.
Excellent video. This one goes down as one of the very good instructional videos. Well done sir! I just made my first sheath based on your knowledge sharing. :)
Hi Ian, hope you're well, great videos too, very helpful. What I'm looking for is a video regarding the use to the leather lubricants, in the order they are applied and, the effect they individually have on the leather, have you made one, thanks?

I came here looking to repair some leather boots and ended up watching this in full. I think you may have just inspired me to take up a new hobby!

by god saint, working so well, but so many explanations, which get tired, you can do it in less time, my God give me patience.
Great video as always. I was really hoping to see how you attached the bungee to the retention strap.
ohh love those fallknivens' own custom F1's soo much, imo the most beautiful buscraft knife ever! and the leather sheath is a masterpiece that fits perfectly with the f1
