Great to hear this again. I was there and remember the dissonance of experiencing one of the most transcendent music performances I'd ever heard (At Giza) while in the rest of the store, people were shopping for records and paying no attention. Chris Hakius forever.
Chris Hakius is incarnation of Hephaestus, the Olympian god of fire, smiths, craftsmen, metalworking, stonemasonry and sculpture... hammering restlessly on his anvil and forging metalworks!!
Holy shit the drums and bass fit so well together in the little grooves they do between the verses. It's almost like the drums are a counter melody to the bass.
My gf really isn't into this type of music, but I wanted her to experience At Giza, I knew she's gonna love it. :) So, I rolled one, fired it and started the song. Told her to be still, not to say anything and just listen for 15 minutes... She got so into it, like, couldn't belive you can experience music like that. I never felt so cool in my entire life. :D To me, At Giza is the greatest song ever made.
I agree. Found out they played in Manchester a few weeks ago and I fuckin missed em. Gutted I am. I need to keep my eye out more for gigs. I always bloody forget. At Giza is genius.
@@ludwig327 They never play anything from the Chris era these days anyway. That being said I would still give my left bollock to see them live now... I suffer in Australia.
I watch this video fkn daily. Always keep coming back to it. What musical genius man... the world never saw or will ever see another Al or Chris. Both legends at their instruments..
There was a time that Om's music helped a lot with my depression. Too bad living in Thailand makes it impossible to see them live. I better get to The State one day.
Ted Olsson maybe Europe is easier. I hear they may tour in 2018, keep your eyes and ears open! But it's true, OM help a lot with mental illnesses... It clears your mind...
The amount of sound... I can only imagine what this must have been like. He's not only using both 4x15 Green cabs but 2 4x12's (seen next to Chris's head) and a 2x15 cab to the left of his Green amps. Powered by 2 Electric Amp 120 watt heads and the almighty Vivekananda 200 watt power amp. Dear lord
Does he uses octave pedal or just dual amp? Because i can hear both the top end and low end of his bass, which is very awesome and fullfiling in this duo setting. Trying to replicate it for a gig.
@@ezzong He sometimes uses Octave Pedals (EHX POG btw) nowadays, but I think in the old stuff he just uses bi-amping, one signal for low end "clean" sound and the other one runs through a Boss DS 1 or 2 or the DOD 250
September 15 2022, late night, listening over and over, missing Chris Hakius at drums so bad! This is an amazing live performance! Peace, love, and Hakius. Cheers
This in my opinion is the greatest performance I have seen out of Cisneros and Haikus (at giza in particular). Dopesmoker is legendary and Pike is great, but this is on a whole different wavelength. They both have the upmost respect for each other and their instruments. Honestly I like this more than the studio version, It seems to be slightly slower, Al's bass playing is groovier and A lot more of Chris's energy and style shows. I probably watch / listen to this video way too much but gladly, It doesn't seem like I'm the only one who "gets it"…. there's something special about the way at giza makes you feel when you listen to it enough times… do any drummers out there know what kind of time signature/drum pattern/technique etc chris plays?
I think Dave Collins from Weedeater summed up doom songwriting pretty well when he said, to paraphrase, that it seems easy to play but it was really hard to write. Chris isn't doing anything weird as far as time goes for the most part. Those sixteenth-note patterns with the kick are just little divisions of what he's doing on the ride, not different time signatures. What is on display is a ton of really good decisions made when writing the songs, very specific techniques, sheer stamina, and that energy and connection you mention. Totally willing to be corrected by someone nerdier about drums, but I think in general it comes down to hard work and an open mind, rather than jazzy wizardry. Whatever the case, it's awesome!
A bit late to reply and I'm not the most knowledgeable drummer but I think this is a technique called syncopation, when it sounds kinda offbeat but basically is a 4/4 beat. Or something like that. Hope this clears is up a bit.
Super interesting watching his technique at around 29:30 , it really looks like he's tapping while still producing such a massive sound. To me, Al is a unique musician in both body and soul (kinda cheesy but true!).
Henrik W he's not tapping. The higher up the neck you play on a bass the phatter and muddier it gets. The bassist from Church of Misery does the same thing. Ultimate sludge sound.
Al plays super high on the body, basically up by the neck. Your tone gets real chunky when you play like that. I wouldn't be surprised if he was playing solely using the neck pickup too.
I've never seen anyone slap down on the body of the bass like that so frequently while playing... I'd be so happy just to look over a bass he's played for years to look at the wear.
Badass, tons of respect for these guys...you'd have a tough time finding another 2 piece band who sounds as big and heavy as these dudes, shit these 2 were heavier than a lot of "typical" size bands of like 4-5 haha. Random thought after I've watched this set a number of times; I wonder how many people there watching were trippin balls on some type of psychedelics lmao. Also wonder if Al or Chris were trippin on anything, were just REALLY baked, or were actually sober and just really zoning out into like a trance/meditation sorta thing with the music hahaha. Love music that can just totally overtake your mind like this though and take you into another world even if you aren't on anything mind-altering..best way to relax and forget all the bullshit life can throw at you. I totally respect Chris's decision to move on to a different phase of his life and settle down creating a family n shit (that's awesome); but now that Matt Pike and Al have kinda revived Sleep and been back together playing shows for a while now I'd love to see Chris join them even if it's only temporarily haha. That's enough rambling from me though, gonna go smoke some more green and relax to some tunes lol.
