You are right that this war changed everything. Yet, it seems human nature is not for war. Otherwise, soldiers wouldn't get PTSD. People who have not experienced war might like the idea of it, as a quick way to solve problems. But, once under fire, everyone regrets the action and is ready to go home (except perhaps the Unkillable Soldier and the few who like war). Even the Kaiser, who was doing everything he could to start a big war, he got very cold feet when the troops started moving into place, and he realized that he'd gotten into a war with two fronts: France/England and Russia.
