Rock music is the main genre of music, metal is a sub-genre of rock. Rock is very diverse (as it's old as half of century) which makes it a bit hard to explain so i'll just quote it from a site: One of the most revered music genres, Rock Music, has evolved from a combination of earlier genres among which is rock and roll and rockabilly in the 1950s. That didn't really explain much but basically it's just electric guitar with light distortion and a drum kit music, and maybe a few more instruments. While the child of rock: metal, still old and diverse, usually has a deeper sound and a stronger distortion. You should look up some sub-genres of both of them, if you want to understand more because, like i said, they are both old and very diverse music genres. Oh yeah, also metal musicians love big drum sets.
