All I have to say is that Centroid has top notch service! I ordered an Acorn kit at the worse time possible, during the Christmas craze, and it still arrived in a week, to Sweden!!! and that is more or less unheard of! Thank you Centroid, you can count on more business from me! =)
Great job on communicating what this does. I'm trying to retrofit a older lockformer vulcan 2000 plasma table that I bought a year ago. As my luck would have it before I could even use it the software crashed and there's no way to get it. So here I am trying to learn what I can to do myself on installing a new controller, motors and save myself some money. I must say it's definitely overwhelming being that I've never personally used any cnc machine let alone program the machine itself to where I can use it .....
I have to say mach3 seems to have a far better driver for steppers. I can dial my steppers in Mach3 at 150ipm and 300 rapids and they run flawless. In centroid by the time I get the steppers dialed in to be accurate to an inch on the table to dro the max ipm I can get without losing steps is 35-40ipm. The features in Mach are far more detailed in adjusting frequency, velocity, and resolution on the steppers. If such features exist in centroid they must be hidden somewhere.
Wow, I wish I had seen this last spring, I just reworked my personal mach3 sx3 mill. I did not have enough inputs and was very frustrated setting up motor tuning on my spindle control. As a Machine Tech Instructor one of our machines at the school has Centroid and it seems to work well. We also have 2 Haas cncs, a Mazak cnc lathe and a YCM VMC with fanuc. So I have other machines to compare the Centroid controller to and it works nicely
I just ordered it. I really hope that it works well. I am jazzed if I can replace the Mach 3 setups I have. I'm nervous every time I run a part and really nothing has ever went wrong but the horror stories exist.
Thank you Franko for a great video. this video was made Sep 25 2017. I am about to convert a g0602 lathe and a Harbor Freight large mill to CNC. Is the Acorn still the best choice at todays dat 2/25/2021. I know newer products have come out and I just wanted your opinion. Thanks and God Bless
My only complaint is that I didn't know about this sooner. I unhappily spent 650$ on mach4 w/ hicon board. If Franco cnc wouldn't have posted this I would still be in the dark about acorn. This seems like a great product and I just received mine but more word of mouth or advertising would have been great. Newfangled gave This old tony a free Mach4 and he threw out multiple shout outs at them.
is their anyway to add 1 more axis? I want to use on a CNC router and the gantry typically requires 2 motors. In the future I would like to add a 4th axis. So the 3 axis machine will take up 4 drives on the board and the future 4th axis would need a fifth. I know you can probably run the 2 gantry steppers off of 1 axis output, but I heard if you have a separate output for each gantry axis you can run a homing program to make sure the gantry is straight. Basically homing each gantry motor independent to make sure your gantry is perpendicular to its travel.
i have about 5 older Centroid units in my shop and they work well. i am building a 3d printer and would love to know if the Acorn will work as a 3d printer controller.
Guess I missed the bus on this one. Just did a retrofit & all is well EXCEPT mach3 has some kind of conflict where the license won't work...only opens in demo mode. So can I successfully use Centroid CNC12 software w/a Gecko G540 Controller, MasterCam, & Win 10? I really need a solution. Thnx so much
the $499 software is the deluxe option with real 3D and 2D Digitizing and Probing cycles. no where else can you get these features for this price! the Acorn Free version is quite capable and the Affordable $99 "Pro" version is what most shops and diy users will use. Please check out the entire feature set here... www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_diy/acorn_cnc_controller.html
Hey, just wanted you to know I reiceved my Acorn and I'm super excited to have it working on my lathe with Clearpath Servos. I'm starting a video series in French about this, here it is : ruclips.net/video/aZTYB23vZz8/видео.html
Why is it limited to a single encoder input? Lots of expansion elsewhere... but... it's clear Centroid does not want to impact their primary CNC retrofit business for folks who have encoders on 3+ axis (which, is normal). It's nice to have a product from a single vendor... but... the next step up is $1800+... so... if you get into this and realize you need more from Centroid- you are really in a pickle. We should be clear. Centroid is trying to figure out how to dabble in the DIY market- without impacting their primary business. I can appreciate that, but, to say this is better than the other DIY products is a stretch at best. All DIY products will take more effort. This is clear. To claim that this DIY product will solve all of the issues present elsewhere is not accurate. The issues you run into will just be different- and your safety net will be the same.
@@E33Tpro UUCNC with the software is 60 buck for the software and a different variety of boards to run it with. ALL well under the price of an acorn kit. Did the math and found a better product. you can fine tune UUCNC much better(read faster speeds all around with more tuning options) than acorn.
@@66dvert So??? I already have the acorn kit, as far as I know...and I have researched it, the acorn combined with any of the Centroid software makes it worth it, plain and simple!
Just now listening to this presentation covering the features of this Acorn and cross-referencing to other typical systems and hardware that most people are aware of, or should be aware of if they have no experience. BUT ......BUT .....BUT .....if the presenter's name is really "FRANCO"....if you didn't listen to your own presentation before posting, you should have. It is one thing to give a "relaxed" presentation, but it is another to give a presentation like this and CONSTANTLY use the FILLER WORDS ...."YA KNOW" and "LIKE". You might think of this detail as "chinsy" ...but it really is not. Narrating like this makes a good presentation ...very cheap. Consider this "constructive criticism" I listened the whole 35 minutes. You must have used "YA KNOW" and "LIKE" a thousand times. VERY POOR for such a public presentation .....but the product does look very good.

Hur har det gått för dig?
Gran tema, sería muy gratificante subir videos subtitulados en español para la gran comunidad latina.
I really like the idea of having everything from the same company. But it would be nice if Fanuc would come out with a similar setup.

how did it go ?
@@joeygonzo Works really well. I have not had any issues or cutting failures ever since. I'd never go back to mach 3.
I'm with Mach4 for years now

Nice comparison, can you compare Acorn with Masso? Or if u can tell broadly the main difference. It will be a big help
Is there a way to have auto squaring for 2 y axis and have a rotary axis? For my rotary/plasma cutter?
Thank You Franco - You ARE my Hero . . .

Can one use Modbus to control the VFD/Spindle through this board instead of the 0-10 analog?
Hello sir,
If machine running time power fail, so this board recover data after restart??
Valid question. Would also like to know how the controller recovers from crash and power interruption.
Can stepper motos be connected directly to this Acron board or still require stepper motor driver?
I got not question that Centroid Acorn is better than Mach 3 and 4.... what about price ??

Excuse me how much for retrofit and how many axis ?
Where can I buy this. I'm interested about to learn more. But can I buy this in Singapore
dows vectric have acorn in their machine file?
Can you use Ethernet servo drivers?
Any info for Teknic servos?
will you need stepper drives for the stepper motors

Yes, you do need drives.

I'm no expert but yes, I believe you'd be set with that, you'll need the Acorn board tough.
What Postprocessor is needed if I use CNC12 Software with the Warp9tech Smoothstepper and Fusion 360?
Fusion has a Centroid post processor. That works fine.
where is the video?
I appreciate the Centroid for what it is, but I think Im going with Masso
is the lathe version out yet the website says its still beta only shipping mill version?
Acorn Lathe was released 10-20-17! www.centroidcnc.com/centroid_diy/acorn_cnc_controller.html
But will it blend?!?
blend? do you mean geometry smoothing? yes it will do that. :-)
Search on youtube for "Will it blend" and you'll get the joke. It's old.
As long as your blender has a 0-10 vdc input you should be good to go. ;)
@@procale or an encoder, lol.
When will you be out with a 5 & 6 axis??!
Centroid sells other high end controllers for 5 axis.
I wanna buy a kit
please verify this can handle closed-loop AC servo motors
BREAKING NEWS!!! You Tube is NOT a tech support forum, never was, never will ....
Well, when I retrofit my lathe, this is what I will use.
Yeah -The Acorn just became available Yesterday... Just in tome
This looks like a really good CNC control. Unfortunately the software is 499$ if you need all the functions..

Centroid's software is every penny worth that. Every machinist I've ever heard / read have said some variant of "I love that control".
No 5 axis, not for me sry
falling asleep, speed = MINIMUM 1.25x... just sayin
1.5 is pretty good.
i love cnc

I like your explanation and the product
mac 3 is verry good
It now cost $325 guess I missed it but this is the first time I have heard of them 😪
Yeah i missed the boat on that as well. Looks like it went up relatively recently, along with the upgrade to the pro software.

not my opinion newer, too ower prize. same cost order all parts new cnc and build at home better.

I have 3 of those, in a box....
