Haoko when looking at other Silverbacks in zoo's is not a very easy going silverback. He can be mean at times. Good thing for Girl power to put a stop to his bs.
Yeah Momotaro is always mad at Gentaro. With Momo family, they cant even give them there meals together. Especially Momotaro he has to have all the good food and he will get all the good food if they dont split them up. Haoko is a sweet heart compared to some of the other familys.
Momoka has always had a tendency to stir up Haoko, I guess she pushed him too far this time. But she doesn't seem too concerned she's not a timid girl, far from it.
I wish zoos had better setups like this one i cant even watch kintaro family videos on the other youtube channel who makes 100s of thousands off of the family but wont donate that money to fix up kintaros living space
Nah, he's totally just trying to play, lol. It's extremely common for silverbacks to annoy their troop into chasing him. It's actually beneficial overall as you can see how the troop teams up to oppose him, meaning it'll bring them closer together and would make them more formidable against wild opponents. Good work, Haoko.
But exactly right. They will always need him for protection. But sometimes the troop bond especially among the females needs to b tested from time to time. Good observation
I've wondered if the alpha males can sense tension amongst the females and strategically instigate some incident to focus their attention away from their personal peeves. Nothing brings a group together faster than a common enemy-- real, or perceived.
Oh, so that's why after everything was calm and quiet, Haoko had to do that last grabbing of the rope with a charge? Because he was still playing? He was aiming towards Momoka from the very beginning with no end in sight...something happen prior to this being filmed. The look on Haokos face says it all. @@thesummerof1968 I agree there is more to the film but I think it's just another example of the way the males of this troop (and his brother Shibani) were raised. They do a lot of highly physical play that borders on fighting mostly involving getting the females to chase the silverback. Also remember that some charges/aggression aren't always just about discipline or aggression, so when he runs by on his hind legs Hoako could just be displaying for the sake of showing how strong/attractive he is.
Richard is a very mean silverback with no heart. The way he treated Bikira (innocent,kind,sensitive) when she first arrived to her whole entire stay with him and his troop was and will forever be unforgivable!

What is with the injuries and bald spots to the gorillas in this zoo. The baby currently has 3 big scrapes, one of the sisters has a big one, and back when this was filmed another one has a huge bald spot on the back of her head.

Yes, you are right. This is not a natural environment for them. Can you image 5 human beings living in this close proximity and under the eyes of others that control their living conditions? Zoos need to change or go out of business if they cannot offer better life conditions of their animals.
@@gregsutton2400 momoko is a little different. If you watch some old videos, after haoko would bite momoko, she would literally stalk him forever. Instead of chasing the silverback, and when he stops, they stop. Which is what normally happens.
@@gregsutton2400 I'm not talking about her kids. In the early years of this group, haoko would attack all three of the females for no reason. When he did, momoko would stalk him for hours. She wouldn't run, she would just follow him everywhere, and not give him a break at all. I know what you mean, they all chase after the silverback when something happens, but this is totally different.
I always thought a male Silverback was comparable to a 11-16 year old human male. They usually have the strength and will to hurt others, but they just as well will irritate others and then run away in a playful manner, like a child

I realize this is 6 months late, but if you haven't found out, maybe this will help. The silverback Haoko-age 27 & Momoko-age 38 are parents to 3 offspring. Daughters: Komomo-age 12, & Momoka-age 8, and a son, Riki-age 4. The other adult female is Toto-age 44-no offspring. He was born in a stable family with both parents & 4 siblings. Haoko moved to Ueno Zoo Japan in 2007. His mate Momoko has a son who is a silverback at Kyoto Zoo Japan. Momoko has always been the dominant female in any group she was in, so she can certainly hold her own. Just this year, the zoo announced that Momoko was pregnant again. Happy gorilla watching!

People stop complaining this zoo is amazing and i love how they setup the place for the gorillas the only reason they arent in the wild is because of evil evil humans killing them and destroying their food and homes its sad to say but they are better their then where they came from
This habitat is barely a half a step up from Kyoto Zoo. I have yet to see a Japanese zoo with a habitat hospitable for gorilla's. It's like they really don't care. Shameful in my opinion. They could sure take several pointers from Taipei, Apenhuel and just about ANY other zoo. But I guess as long as they're getting Yen, they're okay with these dirt pits. Horrendous.
It’s sad when the troop has a mean Silverback to live with. I wonder if they should separate the troop when the Silverback is a bully. Let the females and youngsters live in peace.
I think we have to remember here that they're not humans. While this may look like an "abusive" Silverback to you, this is the family dynamic they've evolved to have over millions of years. Not for us to make a call on when's appropriate to separate a father from his family.
@@pheeel17 That is not exactly the case. Females can and WILL leave a silverback they don't like in the wild. Generally, a silverback only remains dominant for a few years in a wild group before another silverback takes over.
Haoko is too agressive specially with Momoko. In the wild she would have scaped His brother also had that kind of problem and the zoo separated from.his family for a wile. Now he look normal.
