  • Today I am covering how to catch a horse in a pasture. This is something as horse owners we all have to do and I know it can be a struggle sometimes. Every situation is different, but I hope this video helps provide some insight into how to catch a horse in a pasture.

Your video is a lifeline. I just bought a horse and always feel bad asking questions at the farm because I don't want to waste anyone's time. Catching in my horse is one of the scariest things for me even though he comes right to me. I can watch this 20 times and not feel stupid or guilty. Truly, thank you. 🙏

      Hi😀
I’m so glad you found this video helpful!🐴
No one should feel stupid or guilty for asking a question. We are all learning to be better in our horsemanship, including me.
I hope you continue to grow and ask questions. I wish you joy and success on your horsemanship journey💕🐴

I am really enjoying your videos, you are clear and concise and clearly demonstrate what you are doing and saying which makes it easy to learn from you. I`m 34 and have just been riding for a few months (very late starter, I know, haha) and videos like this are so valuable to me. I try to keep these instructions in mind and apply them when I am around horses.

JSHorsemanship I know you probably won’t respond but it’s worth a shot. So I have a small Shetland pony, and her past owners did not take proper care of her and she may even had been abused. She is very, very, very scared of anyone who comes around. I have 4 acres and she stays in 2 and then rotated every once in a while, but it is impossible for her to even take a treat out of my hand. How could I gain her trust?

      Hi Ana:)
Thank you so much for reaching out. I know firsthand that there is nothing more rewarding than being a part of helping a horse become more confident and trusting. I also know how challenging this task can be. One thing I do with horses that are nervous about being touched or approached is move them into a smaller space and work with them on a cue to turn and face at liberty. Once they understand to turn and face. I teach them a cue to come to me. This offers them the opportunity to choose to be with me and gives me a good base on which to build.
I hope this helps. If you have any further questions you can contact me on my website JSHorsemanship.com

    • @aliceharris3075
      @aliceharris3075 3 года назад

@@nancymatarese2019 I had the same problem! You just have to spend time with the horse and earn his/her trust and form a bond. Then your horse should delight in coming to you.

If a horse is difficult to catch, it could help to use pressure and release while walking up to them. Which would mean that you would translate pressure into walking up to the horse, and release as stopping. First use pressure, so walk up to the horse, when the horse is still grazing and being calm after a couple of steps, release and stop. This will be seen as a reward. Do this until you are standing next to the horse.

Hi JS, Just watched this video and it was really helpful especially with the lead line to bring their head up from eating the grass. My horse can try to nip me when I am at her shoulder her shoulder. This is unnerving. Can you help with any tips to manage and prevent this happening. Many thanks.

My horse is out alone and sometimes he is really up at the gate. I just wait and do not go in until he settles. But the barn manager has this exact way to do everything and at this point I am a mess because every step I make is not correct. She also uses a chain and I do not use. This is a small barn, only three horses.

So, I have a horse named Domino and me and him are moving in with my dad. The current place i'm living at, Which he is staying till we get the fence up, Whenever I go to catch him the other horses are fine but he runs. When he sees the halter he immediately turns his butt towards me or takes off running, so because of that I mane trained him to where I lead him by his mane. I've almost got kicked plenty of times and I have spent almost an hour just trying to catch him. Saying this we also have a weird friendship, I don't really wanna change it, But it's where we fight the whole ride. He never bucks me he just acts up and doesn't listen at all which really does get on my nerves and we like fight the whole time but I'm only 11 and have had him my whole life just never payed attention to him, I actually just started riding him last summer and no one at home ever taught me how to ride they would always sit on their bed and tell me what to do and if I didn't understand they'd yell at me to get out, One of the reasons I'm moving in with my dad, but yeah I taught myself everything I know on him probably why we have such an odd friendship lol, Well my dad doesn't know anything about horses and doesn't even like them for that matter so it's just gonna be me and him, again I wont have any kinda help besides for stuff I find online. I really could use lots of help.. Maybe email me? Marynaslv08@gmail.com Also I'm deleting this comment once you reply I have given out to much info I do just really need help.. Thank you

      Hi😀
I usually start to address this problem by working with the horse on the ground and teaching them a cue to come to me. It takes some time and repetition but I have found it to be helpful when addressing this.
Here is a video where I do a basic overview of me teaching a horse to come to me👉ruclips.net/video/qf5q_J3YL_w/видео.html

First time I tried haltering alone today, just in a pen, and my horse for the lesson turned her back on me multiple times each time I tried the approach. *facepalm*. not successful, and I needed help.
My reasoning is that I interrupted her dining, and I'm sticking to it. Nothing to do with the funny looking apprehensive mammal with only two legs that ended up on her back. I'm a greenhorn for sure and I reckon she detected it! Thanks for your help! We'll see how the next one goes!
